A lot of aircraft fuel tanks have that well at the bottom for the fuel
comes out, but we put a Tee there, with a valve on the straight down part
to drain water/fuel, the horizontal line feeds the engine - smart design,
if you have room for it sticking down.

That’s too bad. I’ve got two Advance Autos within like five minutes of my 
house. The one I frequent (if you call every 2-3 months frequent) used to have 
a really good manager that I struck up a friendship with, but he left for a 
better job. It’s still pretty good depending on who is behind the counter. 
There are a couple of guys who have been there a while that are good, but the 
rest of the help wastes good air we could be breathing.

I do like the fact that they have a 500 gallon waste oil tank, so no matter 
when I go there I can always drop off my waste oil. The other store nearby must 
have a 55 gallon drum or something, as the few times I’ve been by there they 
always have a sign on the door about the oil tank being full.

There’s an Autozone even closer than the Advanced Autos, but I don’t 
particularly care for them as they rarely have spiffs for online orders like AZ 
has.

were ready to pick up. When I got to the store nobody had any idea about my

[MBZ] 210 shock replacement

Finally was able to install the set of Bilstein shocks I ordered a while 
back on the 99 210.  It has a little bit of a rattle in the front end 
and figured I need to do the swap bar links and bushings.  I did not 
have the parts so that will have to wait.  I als replaced the rear brake 
pads.  After locating all the tools and using the lift, job took maybe 
an hour.  After installing the shocks boy what a difference.  It is like 
a new car.  The front end rattle is gone too.

close by where my buddy is baking stuff for the farmstand out front of the vast 
estate. There’s a huge amount of used restaurant equipment around for 
reasonable prices, the guy he is working with got it organized. I sent him the 
van listing, he said it was very well outfitted.

True, but those are in the water jacket. Curt is talking about one of the 
magnetic ones that you stick onto a metal surface and conducts heat. If you get 
it on a good flat surface like an oil pan they’ll transmit a fair amount of 
BTUs.

The engine in the ASV is a Deere 4045T which got put in all kinds of stuff like 
loaders. I expect being able to start would be important.
Specifically on our ASV I don't know who chose the 1400W heater, it was in the 
thing when I took over. The box is in the cab which is how I know what size it 
is...

The ASV has a 1400W block heater that I think is excessive but does a very good 
job getting the engine up to temp quickly.

I haven't fully investigated all the heaters on the Tucker yet, it appears to 
have 2 transmission heaters, it's got a regular automatic transmission although 
there is no parking pawl. There must be a block heater too but I haven't found 
it yet. I've only spent maybe 10-15 minutes really examining it, most of that 
time was looking for where the stupid cord was to plug the thing in.

I recently found a 900VA APC UPS in the thrift stream,
unopened in its original box.  The box was dusty,
and looked 'old'.  As expected, the battery was NFG.
It's a 24V pack, open-circuit.  I clipped an old consumer
battery charger (leak generator) to it.  This high-tech
tool uses a diode in series with a 4W night light bulb
to convert line voltage into charging current.  The point
is that it starts out with very high voltage into such a
badly-sulfated battery, 80+V by my measure, and was
able to force in a dribble.  The lamp filament was barely
glowing at first.

Once the voltage got down to about 25V I switched over
to a 30VDC power supply in series with a Heathkit square
wave generator, which was pumping in a very ringy 100kHz
square wave according to the oscilloscope.  After 2 weeks
the square wave is 'flat', though the rings are still there.  The
battery has recovered enough that the UPS will now pass
its self-test, though I have yet to actually try a load on it.

Ours is OK, but it doesn't drive right.  It has the wrong rear end in it, as

a conversion from an automatic.  A shorter ratio would help it a lot.  It is

The ones I'm seeing are 200-300W. All I want of it is to clear out the ice cube 
blocking the fuel line.

The fuel line on the Tucker comes out of a little well at the very bottom of 
the tank, which is a dumb design, any water in the tank settles right into the 
fuel line. That line makes a little loop at the bottom and goes up to the pump. 
I suspect that little loop has some ice in it. The hand pump does nothing so I 
think/hope that the problem is in the line itself.

Fortunately there's a shutoff on the tank so my idea is to stick a heater on 
tonight and get the tank warmish which will hopefully circulate enough to get 
the ice out of the line. If it doesn't my heat gun should make short work of it 
tomorrow. Then I'll drain off a little to see if there is significant water. 
I've got new fuel filters so I'll probably replace those at the same time.

I wonder if the Pious driver swung wide and was going to back up. I can see how 
they could get into the blind spot on a big SUV but anybody paying attention 
should still know they were there.

Right after Thanksgiving I backed into a little Mazda with my Dodge RAM. I was 
at a stoplight and realized I should have turned. I checked ALL THREE MIRRORS 
twice and saw nothing behind me, it was dark out and few cars on the road. I 
checked with Angie who confirmed "Go for it." I backed up 4 inches and 
contacted the Mazda...

I told the kid driving, "You were so close I couldn't see you. In the future 
you shouldn't pull in so close to other cars." He looked a little shy about it, 
his girlfriend went off on me about "victim shaming". I said "Whatever, my car 
isn't hurt, here's my insurance." and went on my way. They claimed the grill 
and tried to get my insurance company to pay for a license plate. The agent and 
I had a good laugh about that one.

When oil got down around $68 or something, some local stations were in a 
minor price war, with Costo or slightly lower than Costco prices on 
Shell and Sunoco.
Around Christmas and New Years I was buying gas for $2.80 with my Shell 
Fuel rewards (5 cents off).


Alas, crude prices that were in the 80s at the beginning of November and 
60s through most of December are back in the 80s, and $3.20 is a good 
deal on 87 octane E10.
At least I managed to fill the ML and the Saturn at 2.949 on MLK day 
before prices jumped to 3.299.

glowed.
My '15 Jetta fired right up at 0F this morning, barely cranked twice. I go with 
the "drive as soon as there is oil pressure" theory. I don't like idling if I 
don't have to. Of course I don't romp on it right away but a little gentle 
driving will put heat into the engine much more quickly than idling and at much 
less risk of oil dilution...

I don't know about W164, but with W163:
Chassis rated 5k.
Curt hitch bolts on just like the factory hitch, rated at 3.5k.
Draw-tite hitch looks like the Curt hitch, but also comes with L 
brackets that you're supposed to bolt to the longitudinal and 
transverse frame rails to strengthen the frame so it can handle a 5k 
hitch.
Does anybody know if the MB towing package included frame bracing, or 
if that's just a Draw-tite thing?
I've towed a 2900lb car on a 300lb dolly with a Curt hitch on my W163 
with no difficulty.

[MBZ] OT: Battery fun

Last week I had a flat tire on the Tucker Sno-Cat drag. Monday I got the 
repaired tire but I had to lift the axle (the axle is on the rear of the drag 
and pivots to lift the drag for road crossings) to get it on, so I had to fire 
up the machine. That turned out to be a no-go, the battery didn't have the 
snort to get it going at 16F. This is a 4D battery like you'd get in an over 
the road truck. Around about a hundred pounds, so getting it into the truck and 
hauling it home was real fun.

Fortunately in my garage I have an H8 battery from the Snowmobile Club's 
tractor which is just sitting on the maintainer running de-sulfate cycles. 
Tuesday was a veritable heatwave and at 40F the H8 had no problem starting the 
machine.

Yesterday I had to move the machine so we could put some stuff behind it. It 
was around 10F so I plugged it in and took the dog for a walk. A half hour 
later it started reasonably easily but I quickly knew I was in trouble, I had 
my foot firmly on the floor and the engine (Cummins 6BT 12v) was just barely 
off idle. I jumped out to add Power Service to the tank but before I was done 
the engine quit and wouldn't restart. I put a quart of Diesel 911 in the tank 
and left it. I did play with the primer a little but it wasn't doing anything. 
The fuel pickup is right in the very bottom of the tank (stupid design) so it 
picks up every little bit of water. I suspect we've got a little puddle of 
water down there.
It's supposed to be 30F tomorrow so I'll take the heat gun and a bucket, 
melt/drain out the water and give it a BIG slug of Power Service.

Last night was our coldest so far this year, -10F. This morning Angie was 
leaving and I heard her car crank over realy slowly. If she'd kept after it 
the car might have started but of course she had triple glowed and then stopped 
and glowed again so the, already not healthy, battery was cooked. I went out 
and checked and it still reads 12.2v but drops precipitously when cranking. I 
put the charger on it and its taking 4a which is the highest I've ever seen my 
6a charger put out. The battery is marked "VW Original" but I can't believe it 
really is on a 2005 car. I thought I'd replaced it but I wouldn't have put a VW 
battery in so that battery is not newer than 2014.

The interwebs suggest that the Golf wants an H7 battery. I might see if the 
club's H8 will fit temporarily and put the one from the car onto the Battery 
Minder and see if it'll recover. I did that with the 2014 dated batteries from 
the Pisten Bully last year and they recovered nicely...

[MBZ] New ML350 Bluetec and Cold Starting

Well is was ‘9’ this morning and I had the new ML sitting outside. It has 
warmed to 15 and I decided to see how it would start. It may have glowed a 
little longer, but started just fine. I was wonder though how long I should 
have it ideal before I start do driving it? I have had very cold starts with my 
95 E300D, but it warming it up was more about the getting the windshield clear 
and defrosted than getting the engine up to a safe driving temperature.

I think the hitches might only be rated 5000lb but maybe the vehicle 
could tow more.

Typical crappy writing (I’m not going to call it “journalism”) on the Giz 
sites. Most, if not all, of their contributors are clearly not writers.

Still, some interesting Mercedes related stuff. How’s about the numbers for 
gray market cars in the 80s? And even the dealers were doing it!
