Re: [MBZ] WiFi extender

2022-02-20 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I'll be the oddball. Run a wire (before hot weather comes) and put an access
point at the far end. Mesh is OK, I guess but cat5 is better, IMO. By the way
you don't need to put the access point (or mesh router) inside the room; just
lay it on top of the drywall or insulation if there is attic above if that's
easier.

My office is on one end of the house and kids Xbox at other end. It gets signal
back there but I guess it’s not good enough to run his games. I put a 2nd
router connected to the first in the dining room to move a signal closer, but
it’s still not working that great.

Aside from running a hard line thru the attic back there, what device or
solution would solve this?

Actually I just went back to their site and it still shows available but
will only let you add 3.  If anybody wants any, try to see if it will
let you order it.

I guess the strategy will be to piece 1 and 2 here and there to stock

2022-02-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

Well hell, maybe I will order one and shut the kid up.

On another note, so I have this T mobile home internet and it seems to
work OK.  I sometimes get around 20mbps sometimes drops to around 10,
today its running about 7 or so.  Even with strong signal it seems hard
to stream shows and kid run his xbox.

Out in the sticks this appears to be about the best option but was
searching for local WISPs near me to see if anything has changed and
this internet service pops up, which is cable internet called
Sparklight, used to be Cable One.  They have up to 1gig connection and
several packages down to 100 or so.  The 300 is about $30 more than I am
paying now . Anyway I plug in my address and it says it is available.  I
am skeptical but it let me pick a package and select an appointment.  I
guess I will see what happens but expect to get a call saying its really
not available.

A mesh network typically consists of a router that has several wifi nodes that are connected to it
via wifi. The "backhaul" traffic, or the traffic between the nodes, is carried on
frequencies that are allocated just for handling the traffic, not the same as the 2.4GHz or 5GHz
frequencies you're using to surf/game/stream, whatever. The "mesh" is a combination of
the router and the multiple nodes that are also wifi access points spread around the house.

I use a mesh network to get wifi out to my garage and the casita in it from my
main (Asus) router. Some Asus models have mesh capabilities built into them.
The nodes are just another Asus router, in my case, a lower model with the same
bandwidth capabilities but fewer features. The fancy mesh systems like shown
above are built to have everything you need. The alternative was a Ubiquiti

related garbage that would go with it. Total overkill, but I did consider it...

Asus and Google's mesh systems are probably the best at a reasonable price.
You're looking at between $200-$500 for a good system - and Kaleb, if you're
going to do this, don't Okie out on it. You'll just end up having to cobble
something else together that still won't do the job (well). Spend the money and
get a good quality system and you'll never look back. I would avoid TP-Link,
which I believe is the former Linksys. They tend to not support (orphan) their
products for long after they retire a model, so you're no longer getting
software or firmware updates when the new stuff comes out.

I use Asus AC1900 routers to do mine, which cost about $130/each. Asus has the
mesh capabilities built into certain models, and it just works. You fire up
your main router, turn on the others, and it sees them and asks if you want to
add them as mesh nodes. You click "Yes" and you're done.

Re: [MBZ] WiFi extender

2022-02-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Ahh, if there was only a world-wide resource you could use to find out more...

Start here:
https://smile.amazon.com/s?k=mesh+network=2QMX7DV2LN0T4=mesh+network%2Caps%2C212=nb_sb_noss_1
Amazon.com: mesh
network
Amazon.com: mesh network
smile.amazon.com
A mesh network typically consists of a router that has several wifi nodes that
are connected to it via wifi. The "backhaul" traffic, or the traffic between
the nodes, is carried on frequencies that are allocated just for handling the
traffic, not the same as the 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies you're using to
surf/game/stream, whatever. The "mesh" is a combination of the router and the
multiple nodes that are also wifi access points spread around the house.

The alternative was a Ubiquiti
setup with an antenna beaming a signal to a receiving antenna and all the
related garbage that would go with it. Total overkill, but I did consider it...

Since the photos are from summertime I guess it's been for sale for a while.
I'd also want to know whether the ACC works properly.

If it really is a close to perfect example, then the problem becomes that it's
too nice to drive. And you'll need a custom insurance policy.

Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?

2022-02-20 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Thanks, now my memory is refreshed re the battery status.
How about load testing the battery, not from the battery posts, but from
the battery cables at the starter connection lug [disconnect the lug from
the starter] and at the ground lug, to isolate the cables with the battery.

Then if the load test at the battery reads 12.4 volts, but the load test
through the cables reads [say]10.2 then you have a cable that has internal
corrosion [maybe where the lugs are crimped on for example] and not giving
you full voltage for a good starter spin.

If the load tester reads the same voltage at the starter ends [load tester
clamped to positive lead and negative lead lugs] then you know you have 1.
a good battery, 2. good cables, then the process of elimination says the
starter is dragging, or start solenoid is not making good contact.
Then you can take the starter apart and look for bad commutators or field
coils, brushes not making good contact, weak brush springs, or solenoid
contacts not clean bright and tight internally.
Here is a youtube video that covers the basics of starter rebuild, just as
a refresher.

Yeah that’s the same color interior as the E500 which was much nastier and came
out looking pretty good. That would likely clean up really well.

My 05E320 wagon is not a performance ride like the 04E500 so this car would
benefit from the extra oomph for sure. It would be fun and practical!

But I wonder what’s wrong with the car at that price.

What these guys are saying. The ML is always going to have a ride like a truck,

I would go with something later and not a W163 if one of your bigger concerns

paying that for this car. Certainly well into the teens, for sure.

Not a bad deal for a 300SEL. Driver's seat is a bit toasted, but yes, the color

Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?

2022-02-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
So safe to assume my numbers are probably accurate and the problem is somewhere
between the jump post and battery. The one thing I didn’t check was between the
post and the cable clamp. I cleaned it anyway but it already looked good.

I did get a helper so I could measure the voltage at the battery while
cranking. It after several tests and the doors being open with lights on, guess
battery ran down to around 12.1 volts or so. Got it on the charger now and will
get back to it later.

If the alternator and starter all run back thru the same cable to the battery,
and there is an issue there, I can assume the alternator might not be fully
charging the battery.

Re: [MBZ] Am I doing this starter voltage drop test correctly?

2022-02-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
There is next to no current flowing through your meter. ANY sized
wire will be good for that, there will be no significant voltage drop
through such wire. A length of old CAT-3 phone wire would be
good enough.

The alternator does not usually participate in the many-hundreds-of-amperes
wiring that is used for the battery, jump-start post, and starter. At most it's
rated for about 100A, and is usually smaller than the big one. Big wire like
that costs money, as do connections rated at this level. Not usually used
anywhere except when necessary.

A schematic is not a wiring diagram. Two different representations of the
same data, intended for different purposes. One helps you understand.
The other helps you find problems.

2022-02-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
07-08 wil be CDI and have DPF but no DEF. 09 and up Bluetec will require DEF
and generally be more complicated and expensive to repair. In the 211 they are
all called bluetec but never had DEF.

Good point.
There are places where the freeway doesn't frost heave.
I keep forgetting that sometimes.

We had a 2012 Passat and a 2001 ML320. The Passat seats were not up to
Mercedes comfort and the wind noise was noticeably greater than a W124. The
ML seats were more comfortable than the Passat, about the same as a W124,
but as others have said, the ride is harder - more like a truck. However,
we did not notice the harsh ride when on Interstate highways, mostly in
town and on our country back roads.
I don't know anything about the newer models

If you want long road trip comfort I think you want an S class not an ML.

I think this is what has happened. The heater was manufactured in 2020. It
looks brand new. I am going over there again later today and will try bypassing
the overheat fuse to see if that is the problem.

It's not speculation to say you are not looking for a body on frame
W163.

I know we’ve had his discussion before (CDI v BlueTec) but I need my mind refreshed, and we are likely, collectively, smarter armed with new information.   Drove the Passat TDI over to San Diego for consultation with the sawbones to set up proton therapy to eradicate my hitchhiker. I managed 40.2 mpg so that was great, but I discovered the seats are not very comfortable for long stretches of time. Now I’m kicking around the idea of selling the Passat and getting a probably much more comfortable ’09-ish ML320CDI, or a newer ML350 Blue Tec. On my W210's the TCM is under the little hatch in the engine compartment
near the firewall on the passenger side.

Re: [MBZ] OT gas water heater, pilot won't stay lit

2022-02-20 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I had to try two different ones on the furnace in the garage to get the pilot
to stay on. I suspect the problem is the connection end, but it’s possible for
the actual thermocouple to not generate enough current.

Better than the modern electronic one that fail because the overheat protection
comes on and stays on…..
