The local farm store had a 6.5 wheel assembly in stock for $75 for I just bought that. They only had one so I guess I will look for another one later. Still have a rear tire leaking but it’s a 24. I bought tubes for it too but not sure if I want to mess with that or put a can of fix a flat in it. I think it’s big enough to use my tire machine on. The story is a bit more complicated than that, obviously. The L1011 was a much more advanced airframe, and the effort Lockheed put into the rear engine placement paid off in about twice the rudder area allowing engine placement further out on the wing. Made the L1011 more fuel efficient and easier to fly. Both planes suffered from some design or manufacturing problems — a all flying (one piece elevator/stablilizer) tail bearing on the L1011 froze once nearly causing an accident when one elevator became locked in place just after takeoff causing some issues (but not a crash), but I don’t think any of the crashes of L1011’s was due to a design fault. The big problem with all the wide-bodies was a weak floor. Even the original 747 had a floor that would collapse into the hold if the hold decompressed for some reason (blown door for instance, fire in the cargo, foreign object impact), but this was never an issue before the floors were upgraded in the late 70s because no one crashed one to reveal the problem. Boeings doors, while problematic to close and seal initially, never blew off after being pressurized, nor did any on an L1011. The weak floor is what crashed the Turkish airlines plane because the floor failure severed or jammed both control cables and hydraulics in all three systems to the tail, and pulled the rudder over and the elevators down when it happened. No way to avoid the crash. The Souix City crash was due to a failure of the main turbine disk in the center engine that detonated the engine and cut all three hydraulic systems. Miracle that anyone survived at all, let along half the passengers. Another stupid defect because GE had decided than since they never found a flaw in a turbine disk they didn’t have to X-ray them after manufacturing, and this one had a casting flaw. Truly brilliant, I think, and why GE is a leftover joke in manufacturing. The problem with the door on the DC-10 was really the latching mechanism — it was changed by the American Airlines requirement that it be electrically operated rather than hydraulically as the Boeing door it was copied from, with the result that it could be partially latched but the latches would not slip open under pressure, the actuator sheared off instead. Nothing wrong with the actual design of the over-center latch that would push harder closed under pressure after the “hook” goes over the center line, but the electric actuator can stall if there is too much friction and will NOT slip back like hydraulic actuators will. If it slips open when the pressure starts to rise, the door will probably be torn off and the plane won’t pressurize, but no damage to empennage or fuselage bad enough to endanger th plane will occur — has happened several times to 747s and other aircraft using hydraulic latches. To prevent that, McDonnell Douglas set up a worthless locking/unlatch detection system with the vent flap driven directly off the operating handle instead of the far end of the lock system (like Boeing’s was). After the Turkish Airlines crash the locking system was modified to match the Boeing one, and there was never another instance of door failure after pressurization. The original locking/latch detections system should have resulted in the failure of certification, it was as bad as the 737 Max auto system using one instrument that crashed those, totally inexcusable. It was also adjustable, so i you backed off the pins they would neither detect a partially closed latch nor prevent the vent door from closing (it seems a knee was applied to the handle in one instance….) and left the door very very unsafe. The head of the FAA at this period was a Nixon appointee who had been the CEO of Beechcraft I think, who was “allergic” to Airworthyness Directives. He preferred the “ gentleman’s agreement” system of ensuring airworthiness, with the results that several crashes due to known but unrepaired problems like cracked wing spars and corrosion issues were “fixed” by the airlines as they saw fit with “guidance” from the FAA rather than having the aircraft declared un-airworthy until fixed. Needless to say, may were NOT repaired with any speed as they were expensive fixes, and more crashes occurred. Terrible idea. Compound that with the general chaos of the airline industry in the early 70’s with the oil crisis and all that, and it appears that the paperwork for the Turkish airline was comprimised during manufacture — it was “orphaned” when the original buyer backed out after it had been started and sat idle for several years. Big mess, never fully cleared up. Both aircraft were too large for the market, especially after fuel prices tripled and passenger bookings plummeted. McDonnell slashed the price (it was originally higher than the L1011!) to get sales and then didn’t have the capacity to build the planes, Douglas had pretty much fallen apart as Douglas Sr. was getting well

Anything special to look out for 124 gasser wagons that would be different than the Sedans? I suppose the SLS and accumulators would be the primary thing? I took my seat and noticed the guy next to me was an ancient and made a mental note of it. The minute we went gear up I asked the attendant I had spoken with how to get a damned drink without that stupid app. I was asked what I wanted and replied, bourbon, if they had it. He said there was some unaccounted for scotch on board if that worked. It would, I told him. A few seconds later he quietly dropped not one, but FOUR little bottles on my lap. Two probably would have been perfect. I turned to the old man next to me and offered him two of them which he gratefully accepted. It proved to be tongue loosener and when I asked him if he was a WW2 vet he said he had been. As some of you know I have a knack for getting good stories out of WW2 vets, what few of them we have left. I asked him where and he replied he had been a waist gunner in a B-17 and knocked back the second drink and started telling his tale. The story was so whacked out it had to be true because you can't make a story like that up. This is his story as best as I can remember it. After graduating from a Catholic high school he joined the Air Corps and quickly washed out of primary flight training for some untold reason. When he joined he never mentioned that from grades 7-12 he had taken French. He was fluent in the language and had been one of the officer of the school 'French Club'. I looked at this old geezer and saw that not only was he spry but was as sharp and clear minded as he had probably been when he was twenty. Clearly he was no doddering old geezer. He was on his 6th mission against the sub pens at St. Nazaire when he got shot down. He said that it was a wasted endeavor because the reinforced concrete roofs were so thick even direct hits had little or no effect on them. When a fire broke out the pilot gave the order and he immediately hit the silk and seconds later the plane blew up. He said he doesn't know what happened to the rest of the crew. As he was hanging in his parachute he said he was preoccupied with coming up with a plan of escape that he didn't notice the ground coming up and he hit the ground like a sack of potatoes. On the way down he had contemplated all of the escape and evasion lectures and said to himself that most of it didn't apply to him because he spoke French. He was going to try and evade. The instant he got up he took off everything that was GI and could be used to identify him and hid it in a nearby pig sty. "There I was," he said. "Bollickey bare assed running around in some French village." "What if you had been caught?" I asked. "At that point I figured I'd just babble my way into an insane asylum," he replied. "It would have been a lot easier and less risky to escape from a nut house than a PW camp." I laughed like hell. I liked the way this guy thought. "Anyway, things started happening fast. I saw a pair of muddy boots on someone's porch and grabbed them. There were a little large but I couldn't be picky at the time. Next I saw a clothes line and ran over to it and helped myself to a damp set of clothes that were a little large but were not obviously so. It was none too soon because when I did the last button a German squad of six soldiers popped up. They saw me and said they were looking for an American parachutist. They spoke German and I looked at them confused until one of them that spoke French translated." he explained. "That's where I almost messed up because I pointed towards a wood line and in French I said, 'He went thataway!' straight out of an old American western. I figured I'd better smarten up right then and there. If I had told them to 'head him off at the pass' I would have probably given myself away," he continued. "Anyway, the French speaking German asked if I would help find the parachutist (who was me) and I said I would. I spent the next few hours helping the squad of krauts try and find the missing parachutist to no avail." "Now after the war this saved me a lot of work, time money and trouble because unlike that guy in the Somerset Meegham novel that went to Tibet trying to find himself I had already tried to find myself in France and I was nowhere to be found!" he laughed. "Then what?" I asked. He explained that he worked his way north by east. His plan was to get to a fishing village along the channel and maybe try and steal a boat and sail for England. He told of getting occasional rides in horse drawn carts from the locals and had some kind of story made up about wanting to see his sick mother and how he had a job as a laborer building defenses for the Germans. That looks like a 4 cylinder in the same chassis as the R100. I've seen one or two R100 in the last 20 years. I've seen a few 1970s piston engine pickups. My brother even owned a B1600 once upon a time. But I've never before seen a Mazda piston engine passenger car older than a GLC. And a 1971 sedan with a bigger engine than my brother's 1974 pickup, that's kind of wow. Most US import Japanese cars from that timeframe were 1200-1400cc.
