Re: [MBZ] OT: Big As A Whale

2022-07-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It was a great car as I recall. I think he finally retired it after putting
over 220k on the clock over 6-7 years. I think it had a top end job on the
engine at some point late in it’s ownership, but otherwise I don’t remember it
needing much else. If I recall, the replacement was a 1975 Chrysler Cordoba.

As I mentioned, my Dad bought it as a big FU to GM. In early 1969 upper
management (above him, he was a executive VP) started a “reorganization”, and a
bunch of big toughs were brought in from Detroit to effect change. Dad wasn’t
having any of this strong arming, so he walked out.

His office was a couple of miles away from the house. I vividly recall being
outside playing basketball after school and my Dad walking down the street into
the driveway with his briefcase in hand, in his suit and with a hat on a la Don
Draper (as in “Mad Men” - this was 1969, remember.)

“Hey, Dad, what are you doing?”

“Walked home from the office.”

“Where’s your car? Did it break down?”

“Nope. Not my car any more.”

I was puzzled. Got the story at the dinner table that night. The next day I got
to ride with him in Mom’s Opel Kadette to the Dodge dealer to buy the Monaco.
He never owned a GM vehicle after that.

I just talked with John at CVJ Reman (1-800-292-2953(AXLE)).

He said they rebuild only genuine Mercedes axles. He said they used to
keep a stock of them on their shelves, but do so no longer, so I will
have to send him mine.

He said the repair would be $269.00 for each axle and take two weeks.

This is true, however, I had determined the compressor was the issue, we just
didn’t have time to swap it before he left FL for AZ last February. Since it
was February, AC wasn’t an issue at the time. Now that he’s in AZ and it’s
summertime, even in Flagstaff at 7,000’, AC is still necessary at times. That
and he often ventures into the “valley” (lower elevations) for various reasons,
so it’s REALLY necessary down there as ambients can easily be above 100F.

The troubleshooting that guy in the video did was sound, and informative. Like
he said in the video, another shop wanted to throw a PCM at it. I want to say I
read on Benz Whirled that the W210s Nippon Denso it is pretty common for the

So it appears. I’m guessing the plate either got stuck in the flat/neutral
position or the solenoid won’t move it out of that position.

This is what affected the youngest son’s compressor in his facelift W210. Spun
without issue, charge was good, simply didn’t compress.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Big As A Whale

2022-07-26 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

I think I have the following story correct and not backwards:

Some folks we knew from out at the lake drove big station wagons. A
series of Pontiacs as I recall but one year, they showed up in a Dodge.
The reason was that they could not get all of the options they wanted
unless they opted for the car with the fake woodgrain on the sides (ala
Country Squire by Ford) and he did not want the woodgrain. He tried to
convince the dealer that he should be able to get the base car with the
options but finally gave up and went where he could get what he wanted.

Good point, hadn’t thought about those. I would have spent more time
disassembling the old compressor to find out than it took to just swap it out
with a new one. I think it took us under an hour to R&R the compressor and
receiver/dryer on his W210.

Re: [MBZ] The GL AC

2022-07-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I’ve worked with and am familiar with variable displacement pumps like this, I
was just curious to see how they controlled the swash plate and how it
interfaced with the pistons. Pretty slick.

Re: [MBZ] Stupid home AC

2022-07-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
AC guys just left. They checked the capacitors, which were fine, checked the
r410 which was fine, checked the contacts in the contractor that were fine. No
issues found. Only thing they said was with the power flashed it might have
tripped an overload when it tried to start back up. I turned it off completely
when it happened then tried it a couple of hours later and still the fan kicked
on but not the compressor. Kicked on 5 days later just fine. So it appears to
be working fine at the moment.

The wretched X5 has that system, and of course it failed and needed
a new (rebuilt) compressor, with all the trimmings.

She says "Passenger front end air suspension needs to be inflated" which
could be something very simple, or struts are blown, but in any case not
a huge issue.  Has tow package.  She bought a new GL so has not driven
this one.

W123 and W116 shafts are the same length?
I have a diff and halfshafts out of a 240D automatic.
They probably don't have much wear, but the boots are about 40 years

It's up in Max's hood, I'm up to my eyeballs in Benzes right now or I
would be looking at it for sure.  There's 2 or 3 at LKQ so pulling parts
would not be hard, and a new fuel pump probably isn't that much

You could probably get $5k for that in running condition.

Re: [MBZ] The GL AC

2022-07-26 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Here's a video I found that gives a very good explanation of how the variable
displacement compressor works. It's not a Benz, but the idea is the same.
Either the solenoid valve isn't working, or the valve plate has failed with a
crack or something.

True. Well the damn thing has not blown any cold air in 2 hours. I think
tomorrow I’m going to recover the refrigerant just to see if it’s leaked any
since I recharged it. Maybe it’s got a small leak or something.
