I’m going to be road tripping over the holiday and driving the 2008 ML550. I 
will be really interested to see what kind of mileage I end up with on this 
beast.

I keep extremely detailed records, which since the purchase of the car in May 
of this year show that I’m averaging 15.89 mpg. Considering that the bulk of my 
driving is short trips, this doesn’t come as a surprise. I took a relatively 
long trip this past weekend of about 160 miles that was nearly all highway, and 
the computer said I averaged nearly 20 mpg for it. This week’s trip will be far 
longer (going down to south Florida and back) so it should be an even better 
indicator of what this beast will do on the highway.

Better than 20 mpg, I hope…

What size fuel hose is typically used for the return lines and/supply lines? 
From what I am seeing it looks like a 7.5x13.5mm hose. What is the closest

The one I drove was black/black and was really nice. Someone on the list had an 
interest. I went with the owner who was maybe 6ft and he was okay in it but 
another 4” for me really made it very tight. I just drove it in his 
neighborhood because I was afraid to get out on the busier streets, but it was 
fun.

I had a friend was going to do a running thing Saturday but she had done one 
2wk ago (ran 42mi after not running for 2yr, she’s an animal) and a bunch of 
her posse came down with the woohoofloo so she had to back out.  They all had 
the vaxxes so it was curious. I don’t think any of those who turned out 
positive had any significant symptoms, and she didn’t have any, so maybe the 
vax mitigates the symptoms or infection in some.

Wow! Never seen the clear coat roasted like that on one of these. Interior 
plastics have the typical fading/failure, however. Every one of these was 
afflicted with it.

M112 is pretty robust. I wonder what the issue is?

I had a blinding headache for 2 days, ibuprofen helped but didn't take it away. 
She had the same but didn't take much of anything so she really suffered.

The worst thing for me was that I couldn't sleep. At night I'd double dose 
NyQuil and a dose of melatonin just to get 8 hours but that wouldn't put me to 
sleep in the day time. So for a week I was mostly just uncomfortable and 
bored...

Clank while cranking is a bad thing.  Valves won’t make any noise since they 
sit directly under the cam, if they are flat from no oil they just won’t open 
very well.  

Bad rod, missing piston (yes, my friend Hans once got a  Benz at the shop with 
the #1 rod thrashing around in the bore, the piston was in pieces in the pan).  
Bad main bearing usually doesn’t make much noise cranking unless its REALLY bad.

And a bad torque converter will clank too.

I did forget to mention the car has one of this’d uncle Kent purge bottles 
hooked to it, so it’s running off that rather than the tank. They also had the 
shut off valve wired up so it couldn’t be pushed down. Not sure why. Now that I 
remember that I need to see if it’s dropping down while cranking. If it is, 
this would indicate they have the vacuum lines reversed. Could be simple, but 
still that clank.

Absolutely do NOT use ether on that engine — at best you will just kill the 
starter.  Ether ignites well before TDC on a 21:1 compression ratio engine, and 
driving the piston up into a full power ignition will surely overheat the 
starter windings!  It will NOT start on ether.  

No propane either, same issue.

Crack the lines and make sure you have fuel — a clogged filter or leaking 
suction line (there are several) or leaking pre-heater will prevent starting.
