Air blows ice cold... but only in winter and through the multiple rust
holes in the body... Too bad... rust worm takes another coupe... Price is
far too much for the visible amount of rust that would require whole panel
replacement.. Mega $$$ and time to make it right.. and even then, it will
never be "original".. just "repaired"..

I’m thinking Ms Chen’s familiarity with English might be limited but it appears 
it can’t be driven. 

So this thing is basically a brick at this point if there’s no way around the 
key issue. Scrap value. Sad if it’s nice. I’m gonna go look at it tomorrow if 
she’s around. Might be a $500 parts car.

I did a very brief research and it appears the “facelift” cars which are after 
96? Use a chip on the blade key that has to talk to the EIS. These are what are 
apparently unobtainium from MB. I don’t know if there are any aftermarket 
solutions. Got me thinking too if you could get a blade key then go in with the 
computer and hack the EIS to disable the electronic aspect but retain the 
mechanical function.

Key failures can be tracked to two things, typically:

1.) Bad battery (don’t use cheap import batteries, they often don’t work)

2.) Broken inductor on the circuit board in the key

Number two is not uncommon and is an easy fix. In the very “end” of the key, 
that is, the part that gets inserted into the slot on the car, is a small 
inductor that acts as the “antenna” that transmits the EIS code to the car’s 
receiver antenna, which is in the ring around the ignition switch. You can 
disassemble the key and resolder the broken wire on the inductor easily.

Don’t ever use a third party to “code” a key for use in your EIS-equipped car. 
here’s why:

In EIS, there are eight “slots’ in the memory for keys. If a third party clones 
a key, they effectively “lock” the slot that key was in and prevent additional 
keys from being added to EIS. So if that cloned key is lost, fails, whatever, 
you’re screwed.

And each dealer handles these requests differently. Mine is pretty cool in that 
they’ll sell me a loose key. They want me to have the car present when they 
deliver the key, but that’s more for assurance that it works than security. I 
rarely do, but I try to accommodate them just to play nice.

My friend damaged his 1999 E320 key and was unable to start the car.  The
local dealer required that he present the vehicle in person with
title/registration in order to make a duplicate key. Car was parked in a
garage inaccessible to tow trucks, so there was no way to do this.
Instead, he found a local computer tech wizard to repair the key.
Success.  Cost him under $50.

It would have to.  Up to 1200 baud (202/212) didn't use any compression at
all, and was pure audio FSK.
Once you hit 2400 baud the 'training' cycle came into being, that noisy
connection-establishment phase
that is so characteristic of dial-up in the public psyche, and that's I'm
sure what runs afoul of VOIP.

In spite of faster modem standards, credit-card readers that used dial-up
stuck with 300/1200 baud
simply because there was no training time required, and the amount of data
needed was so small
that the time to make the connection and get the data was least when using
the oldest slow standards.

I've been listening to some vintage computer podcasts that have talked about 
the issues trying to use a modem over today's VOIP phones. Apparently the 
compression used today prevents modem use. There is a theory that 300 baud 
would be slow enough that it's still work...

M156 engine is kakked.  Needs new head bolts, gasket, heads machined 
maybe.  Not cheap, a somewhat involved job


please No ridiculous offers. I will eventually repair it if I can’t get 
a decent amount out of it. Just to nice a car with 113K to knock it in 
dirt by parting it out.
