[MBZ] Transmission helper ideas, Please!

2016-03-07 Thread Chris N John via Mercedes
I'm hoping some of you experienced gentlemen can assist in a diagnosis
and possible repair of the transmission on our 1980 300TD. The reverse
gear stopped working suddenly after a sharp drop into a hole in our
driveway at a slow speed of about 10 mph. No sound at all, just would
not engage or try to move when we started it up a few minutes later. So,
we thought the transmission must be on its way to complete shutdown,
however, we continued to drive it for another 4 or 5 thousand miles.
(you do get creative in how you park when you can only move forward!) It
just kept going and going! Now we are needing to repair some ball joints
and other stuff in front end. The question is now, can the tranny be
repaired with a reasonable cost and effort to make it worthwhile to
order the front end parts and repair that? We love this car!
The shift lever seems tight. I have read about how the bushings can be
damaged and cause trouble. But it doesn't seem like that is it. Is it
worth changing them, just in case? Really would appreciate some feedback
and advise! Thanks so much, we really learn a lot from this list!

The two symptoms suggest the shifter bushings or adjustment, the former
because the neutral-lockout switch wasn't being put in the right
position, the latter because the transmission's lever wasn't placed where
it should have been.

When you have the problem, have someone crawl under the car and wiggle
the transmission's lever to see if it will move to the correct position.

Thank You!! For all the ideas and replies!! No I did not see any of the
replies until I had done a re post of the original message. Just thought
I had sent the first off into cyber space for whomever and wherever it
might land. After waiting several days and watching the posts several
times each day I just thought it hadn't made the right bus. You've all
given a lot of good advise, and as soon as it cools down a bit here,
we'll go to work on it. I'll report on what we find later on
Something I read sometime ago led us to believe we should order a
bushing because of the starting trouble. Then all the mess with Trent
evolved and I didn't go ahead with order. Probably will get one on hand
though. Looks to be a cheap investment and is probably worn anyway if
not the major culprit! Thanks again, nobody knows a benz as well as benz

[MBZ] Our 1980 300SD??S

2013-06-27 Thread Chris N John
Hello to all of you smart, knowledgeable, Mercedes Gurus! I think that's
the word I want, anyhow, all of you folks that might once again
enlighten us about our quirky, but loveable car. My son just keeps
saying get rid of it, sell it to some high-school kid who needs a
project. Can't do it! I love driving the old girl!
Been having some issues starting it throughout the winter. Usually a
jiggle of ignition or the auto gear shifter would do the trick. Some
times it needed to roll back a bit and then most of the time it would
start. Sometimes nothing will work and we have to drive something else
until next time she really wants to take us someplace.
OK, with warmer weather, it has been better about starting. Then last
week we went to town, stopped at Maverik, reversed and came home.
Stopped the car off to the side of the driveway to work in the garden a
bit, then got into the car, started it (perfect!) and put it in gear to
back up. NO GO in reverse!! Just revved up a bit and didn't move. OK,
then forward? Yep, goes perfect! NO noise, no warning. Was a bit low on
tranny fluid. That hubby refilled, but didn't make a difference in the
reverse. So I'm going to go to town this morning and try to remember to
park where I don't have to back up! Else I'll be calling on some strong
guys to push it back for me so I can come home. Hope someone can give us
some ideas and it isn't too terminal! She probably doesn't warrant a new
transmission. We changes the filter and fluid a few years back, the
fluid isn't dark or burned smelling. HELP! and Thanks for ideas!! Chris

[MBZ] Blinking light?

Hope I'm not requesting something that has been covered, but I haven't
seen any discussion about this problem, if it *IS* a problem?? After
starting my car with the usual wait time for the glow plug indicator
light to go out, the light comes back on blinking at about 1 second
intervals and continues for about 30 blinks. Started doing this about 6
months ago. Guess I wonder if it is a warning about something wrong, but
if so I am not getting the full message. Maybe its in Morse code, which
I don't know how to decipher! Any ideas or knowledge out there?? Thanks

last well and parts are available. Really think they are worth the
money. I have an American Patriot right now and have used it for about
10 years. Bought it as a repo. Don't pay for their new price spiel, but
they always have a repo available when you won't buy the new one at
that atrocious price after the demo. We have changed bearings in both
the motor and the power head and it still runs great, but I am tired of
buying the bags over and over again. Just a few thoughts about my

[MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again!

2011-01-05 Thread Chris N John
Well, I'm ashamed that after all the help you guys offered to try and
resolve our vac issues that we are once again heating our car with the
defroster fan this winter
We tried various changes on the lines coming out of the firewall into
the engine compartment. You may or may not recall, when we bought our
car, it had several vac lines to the right of the brake unit just
dangling and connected to NOTHING. We just don't know what all was
changed or bypassed and why! Still would like to see pics of correct
connections. I know there is an issue with the holding vac on the door
locks. They lock fine but bleed off at various rates. Sometimes they
won't all lock, but can be pushed down and will hold for awhile. Anyone
out there still have a car like ours? I study the diagrams and seem to
get more confused. Think we need a mighty-vac from the sound of things,
also? Is it best to just change to new check valves or is there a way to
test and see if they are good. They may even be installed backwards for
all we know
Guess it will be spring someday and then we will be worried about the AC
that also doesn't work. And even though it hasn't started for 10 days
cause its too cold, we Love our car! Still not sure if that
block heater is there, but we are going to check it out soon. We have a
great old 72 ford bronco that gets us where we want to go in this weather!

Thanks again everyone, Chris in NW Wyoming

[MBZ] hose heater versus block heater?!!

2010-12-15 Thread Chris N John

Hi, everyone
We too are having issues with our car starting this winter (1980 300
SD). Hubbie put about 4 different hose heaters on it last winter. The
last one finally worked once or twice. (We won't mention the local car
parts store) We tried it again in November and it seemed to be doing
fine and then the morning we had appointments to keep 80 miles away and
temp was -20, guess what? Yep-- it didn't work at all. We made it to
appointments, but used up our easy travel margin of time for sure!!
So, my question is: the block heaters sound more dependable and
efficient but hubbie is concerned about problems installing in the old
car. He thinks it will be hard to seal up after removing the old plug,
which seems to be another big concern, too. Any feedback from you
experts? Should we keep trying the hose heaters, and is there one that
really works long term?? Thanks for advice!
Wishing you all a Wonderful Christmas Season and a Great New Year to
come, Christy

Andrew, this recipe is in my old Ball Canning book. My Dilly kids
really liked them. Hope it works for you!

   Dilly Beans
2 pounds green beans, trimmed, 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 4 cloves
garlic, 4 heads dill, 2 1/2 cups water, 2 1/2 cups vinegar, 1/4 cup salt.
Pack beans, lengthwise, into hot Ball jars, (as I said, it is a ball
book, think I have used other brands of jars successfully!) leaving 1/4
inch head space. To each pint, add 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1 clove
garlic and 1 head dill. Combine remaining ingredients and bring to
boiling. Pour, boiling hot, over beans, leaving 1/4 inch head space.
Adjust caps, processe pints and quarts 10 minutes in boiling water bath.
I add 5 minutes to the water bath because we live at a higher altitude,
just to be safe! Yield: about 4 pints. Note: Let beans stand for two
weeks before tasting to allow the flavor to develop.

These keep for years, if you have any that last that long! Have fun!!

sounds kind of familiar though, all the ys and check valves are
confusing.

Yes, now that I think of it our 114 has green lines for HVAC.

The only real 'secret' is that the like-colored lines be together
behind check valves. The HVAC and the door locks both have
vacuum reservoirs, and they do no good whatsoever if they're not
coupled to their consumers. I think everything else doesn't care
too much, but of course you don't want something like that engine
economy gauge or a diesel key shutoff going to the reservoired
vacuum. I'm pretty sure the vacuum feed to the cruise control
normally shares the reservoired door lock line. The 'mother lode'
diagram seems to be 54-570a, which had vacuum supply diagrams for
107/114/115/116/123 in it, and was found only in the 114 and 116
CD's.

I cut out the drawing and attached it here. The associated caption:

Central Locking System Model 116

3 Vacuum line (black/yellow) to throttle servo unit
5 Check valve cruise-control/central locking system
6 Vacuum line (white) from vacuum connection

I bought leather look vinyl and also perforated vinyl from American Trim
Upholstery in Tulsa. They are easy and helpful to work with. The
company has a website and also will send samples so you can look over
colors and texture. Can't really match a color on a computer monitor.
You can get a good idea of the products from the site and an idea of

[MBZ] Back to vacuum lines!

2010-04-15 Thread Chris N John
Hello helpers! You responded some time ago with diagrams and information
about what vac lines (colors) were for and we tried changing the loose
hanging ones coming out of the firewall in the engine compartment to see
if it would fix some of our problems: The climate control only works on
defrost. The cruise controls doesn't work. Anyway, the fix didn't help
and the car would not turn off with the key. (Had to use the red stop
lever under the hood) So we put it back where it was again. Does anyone
have a 1980 300 sd they could take some pics of so we can compare? Ours
has been changed so much, prior to our ownership that we are really
confused!! Don't even know if the check valves are turned the right way.
And again the unconnected green and yellow lines need proper
connections. Just don't know where! I think if we can get it right, we
can then test and find out if some other repairs need to be done. There
is some kind of a ?cutout switch? mounted close by on the firewall that
seems to be a safety for the turbo or transmission or something. It
appears not to work as it should. Also the tac doesn't work, only once
in awhile when it goes crazy and flops around like its possessed. Lots
of issues, but we love our car!! Thanks again for help and suggestions.
Would really appreciate some photos! Chris

If so, I bet that drives like a truck, with the extra weight up front

The lift pump is attached to the injection pump. If the filter is dry,
you're sucking air from somewhere. Could be anything from a damaged
line, to sucking fuel from the return line fitting at the tank (which
goes dry at 1/4 tank or so), to a plugged tank screen, to poor tank
venting, to an empty tank and a stuck fuel gauge.
