[MBZ] Transmission helper ideas, Please!
I'm hoping some of you experienced gentlemen can assist in a diagnosis and possible repair of the transmission on our 1980 300TD. The reverse gear stopped working suddenly after a sharp drop into a hole in our driveway at a slow speed of about 10 mph. No sound at all, just would not engage or try to move when we started it up a few minutes later. So, we thought the transmission must be on its way to complete shutdown, however, we continued to drive it for another 4 or 5 thousand miles. (you do get creative in how you park when you can only move forward!) It just kept going and going! Now we are needing to repair some ball joints and other stuff in front end. The question is now, can the tranny be repaired with a reasonable cost and effort to make it worthwhile to order the front end parts and repair that? We love this car! The shift lever seems tight. I have read about how the bushings can be damaged and cause trouble. But it doesn't seem like that is it. Is it worth changing them, just in case? Really would appreciate some feedback and advise! Thanks so much, we really learn a lot from this list! ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

The two symptoms suggest the shifter bushings or adjustment, the former because the neutral-lockout switch wasn't being put in the right position, the latter because the transmission's lever wasn't placed where it should have been. When you have the problem, have someone crawl under the car and wiggle the transmission's lever to see if it will move to the correct position. You've all given a lot of good advise, and as soon as it cools down a bit here, we'll go to work on it. I'll report on what we find later on Something I read sometime ago led us to believe we should order a bushing because of the starting trouble. Then all the mess with Trent evolved and I didn't go ahead with order. Probably will get one on hand though. Looks to be a cheap investment and is probably worn anyway if not the major culprit! [MBZ] Our 1980 300SD??S
Hello to all of you smart, knowledgeable, Mercedes Gurus! I think that's the word I want, anyhow, all of you folks that might once again enlighten us about our quirky, but loveable car. My son just keeps saying get rid of it, sell it to some high-school kid who needs a project. Can't do it! I love driving the old girl! Been having some issues starting it throughout the winter. Usually a jiggle of ignition or the auto gear shifter would do the trick. Some times it needed to roll back a bit and then most of the time it would start. Sometimes nothing will work and we have to drive something else until next time she really wants to take us someplace. OK, with warmer weather, it has been better about starting. Then last week we went to town, stopped at Maverik, reversed and came home. Stopped the car off to the side of the driveway to work in the garden a bit, then got into the car, started it (perfect!) and put it in gear to back up. NO GO in reverse!! Just revved up a bit and didn't move. OK, then forward? Yep, goes perfect! NO noise, no warning. Was a bit low on tranny fluid. That hubby refilled, but didn't make a difference in the reverse. So I'm going to go to town this morning and try to remember to park where I don't have to back up! Else I'll be calling on some strong guys to push it back for me so I can come home. Hope someone can give us some ideas and it isn't too terminal! She probably doesn't warrant a new transmission. We changes the filter and fluid a few years back, the fluid isn't dark or burned smelling. HELP! and Thanks for ideas!! [MBZ] Vacuum Cleaners
Several of my friends have Dysons and love them! They (Dyson) also has a canister model now, which is what I have always preferred. I like the looks of that rolling ball feature on the upright too, though They last well and parts are available. Really think they are worth the money. I have an American Patriot right now and have used it for about 10 years. Bought it as a repo. Don't pay for their new price spiel, but they always have a repo available when you won't buy the new one at that atrocious price after the demo. [MBZ] 1980 300 SD vac lines again!
Well, I'm ashamed that after all the help you guys offered to try and resolve our vac issues that we are once again heating our car with the defroster fan this winter We tried various changes on the lines coming out of the firewall into the engine compartment. You may or may not recall, when we bought our car, it had several vac lines to the right of the brake unit just dangling and connected to NOTHING. We just don't know what all was changed or bypassed and why! Still would like to see pics of correct connections. I know there is an issue with the holding vac on the door locks. They lock fine but bleed off at various rates. Sometimes they won't all lock, but can be pushed down and will hold for awhile. Anyone out there still have a car like ours? I study the diagrams and seem to get more confused. Think we need a mighty-vac from the sound of things, also? Is it best to just change to new check valves or is there a way to test and see if they are good. They may even be installed backwards for all we know Guess it will be spring someday and then we will be worried about the AC that also doesn't work. And even though it hasn't started for 10 days cause its too cold, we Love our car! Still not sure if that block heater is there, but we are going to check it out soon. [MBZ] hose heater versus block heater?!!
Hi, everyone We too are having issues with our car starting this winter (1980 300 SD). Hubbie put about 4 different hose heaters on it last winter. The last one finally worked once or twice. (We won't mention the local car parts store) We tried it again in November and it seemed to be doing fine and then the morning we had appointments to keep 80 miles away and temp was -20, guess what? Yep-- it didn't work at all. We made it to appointments, but used up our easy travel margin of time for sure!! So, my question is: the block heaters sound more dependable and efficient but hubbie is concerned about problems installing in the old car. He thinks it will be hard to seal up after removing the old plug, which seems to be another big concern, too. Any feedback from you experts? Should we keep trying the hose heaters, and is there one that really works long term?? Thanks for advice! The cruise controls doesn't work. Anyway, the fix didn't help and the car would not turn off with the key. (Had to use the red stop lever under the hood) So we put it back where it was again. Does anyone have a 1980 300 sd they could take some pics of so we can compare? Ours has been changed so much, prior to our ownership that we are really confused!! Don't even know if the check valves are turned the right way. And again the unconnected green and yellow lines need proper connections. Just don't know where! I think if we can get it right, we can then test and find out if some other repairs need to be done. There is some kind of a ?cutout switch? mounted close by on the firewall that seems to be a safety for the turbo or transmission or something. It appears not to work as it should. Also the tac doesn't work, only once in awhile when it goes crazy and flops around like its possessed. Lots of issues, but we love our car!! Thanks again for help and suggestions. Would really appreciate some photos! Re: [MBZ] OT: Do GFCI receptacles go bad?
Max Dillon wrote: I think I've got a bad one. Several weeks ago I had my house power-washed, and the fan in the screened-in back porch got wet and shorted out and tripped the GFCI receptacle. Once I'd figured out the problem and removed the fan, leaving the wires capped with wire nuts and tucked safely into the box, the GFCI would stay reset. Days later it tripped again, but stayed reset after I pushed the button. We were gone from the house for about 10 days, and it had tripped again while we were gone and won't stay reset. Now I double checked the fan box to make sure the wires weren't shorting anywhere, but the GFCI still won't stay reset. If I reset it several times in a row, it will eventually stay reset for an hour or two. So, do these things age and go bad? This one is probably about 15 years old. [MBZ] Towing went well!
OK, the SD is in the shop warming up a bit. Seems like the fuel filter is pretty dry. So they are suspecting a bad fuel pump. Where do they hide them on the '80s, does anyone know?!! Our 450 SELs are all real obvious. This one looks to be hidden in the trunk or somewhere back there, right?? Thanks AGAIN, Christy Tow strap worked great, think the guys had a lot of experience with that part. Just didn't want to damage the car by towing, if we shouldn't.
