There’s no way I could turn the John Deere over, for sure. That thing was cast
out of a solid billet of iron, I believe.

Since I can’t ever seem to post images to the list, I’ll send it to you
directly and you’re welcome to share if you like.

Dang it, I thought I had a picture of me with my Johnny Lightning helmet that I
got for Christmas in the mid 1960s. I was going to post it. All I could find
was a picture of me on a John Deere pedal tractor from around 1964-5. I
remember my Dad had a permanent deal with a local welding shop who regularly
welded up the rear axle on it when it broke, which was pretty often for some
reason.

My brother has worked from home for a couple of decades. He has a dedicated
room in the house that is for his office and nothing else. He didn’t even let
the kids go in it when they were younger.

2020-12-05 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That and when they’ve griped about work paying for their Internet access, the
counter is, “So you wouldn’t have it if you didn’t need to work at home?”

This is nickel and dime stuff by people who just want to gripe, in my opinion.
When someone sits down with them and crunches the numbers, as a couple of
managers have had to do, suddenly working from home looks far more attractive.

As Mitch alludes to, the IRS requirements for office space at home are very,
very strict and difficult to comply with. You pretty much have to have a
dedicated space you do absolutely nothing else in the way of personal stuff
with or it doesn’t qualify, as I recall.

We’ve heard some griping from employees about this, but that’s countered with,
“So how much money have you saved this year not having to commute, buy lunch or
work clothing?”

Yeah. That shuts it down pretty quick.

It’s a big win as far as I’m concerned. I’ve saved a boatload of money just on
commuting costs.

2020-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our HR department was reaching out to find some sort of application or logging
method to track employee’s time via Active Directory or VPN access.

We pretty much told them “No” and explained that logging can’t be a means of
time racking, as it’s easy to spoof and doesn’t always relate directly to
specific operations or actions by a user.

For example, our Cisco VPN client regularly logs on and off in the background
as a normal part of it’s operation. So that’s a service function, not a user
one. Does it mean the user wasn’t working?

Slippery slope, for sure.

Re: [MBZ] I can not believe how stupid people are -- now remote work

2020-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is a common finding in the research on remote workers who work from home.
They typically put in more hours because there’s no disconnect between home and
work. There can also be concerns that there is a perception that if they’re not
producing they’re not working. This is also something that’s come up in
research as well.

We’ve focused on task or project completion, not watching clocks, and that
seems to work well. As my boss says, he doesn’t care where or how much you work
as long as things get done and when expected.

I would agree with this. I have a team that I work with, two of which are
younger people about 20 years my junior, and one who is a few years older than
me. We all get along well and have a lot of common interests, so the social
interaction was definitely a part of the work day. I definitely miss that
aspect of work.

The other aspect that hasn’t been mentioned here is what I would describe as a
“separation of duties”, although that’s not the ideal description.

I’m talking about the distinct delineation of “work” versus “home”. That is,
when I leave work, I’m done for the day both mentally and physically. That’s
not the case when you’re working from home. This is probably the big negative
for me when it comes to working from home. I like the physical separation
between the two environments.

I know, it’s just that I find it annoying. That and if you’re a relative newbie

And in a nutshell that’s what this company found. While the initial approach
was to let roughly 50% of the employees work remotely, about a third of those
ended up wanting to return t the office if I recall correctly. Many of them
were younger people whose social lives involved relationships with their (work)

Along those lines, there’s a “Hidden Brain” episode that addresses a study that
a company in China did in the last year on remote workers. It’s pretty
interesting, especially the social aspects of what they discovered.

You can fast-forward in to about 11:00 or 12:00 when the segment on this starts:

Sounds like riding/driving a “real” Hummer. I see the ones that were designed
for consumer use and laugh. They’re so far removed from the real thing it’s
laughable.

A good way to get a couple of herniated discs - riding in the back of a (real)

I don’t but I highly doubt that he would be able to find anything to graft onto
the brakes themselves. I’ve seen plenty of them (used to work to a RR
dealership in Zionsville, IN, and hang out in their shop during lunch chatting
with the mechanic and looking at what he had on the rack) and the brakes are
nothing like I’ve seen before.

Re: [MBZ] So here's this one too -- 2007 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 350

2020-11-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have to share a related story…

I belong to a FB marketplace group or a nearby community that is very high end,
like $1M homes. Those rich people toss out some really nice stuff. But anyway,
apparently one of them is or has a relative that’s a used car dealer. They post
cars from time to time, rarely anything of interest to me. So a couple days ago
the guy posts a 2007 E350 with a CEL for “only” $7500.

I commented, asking if he knew what the CEL was for, as it was likely timing
issues with this car due to the issue with the balance shaft. Of course it was
a bit of a dick move, but I don’t care for sleazy used car dealers, either.

He came back and said the CEL for for the intake manifold runner control valve
and that it was a $35 part. I checked, it’s not. Pointed that out, and that it
was more likely the intake runner flaps were seized and the control valve had
broken because of it.

He took down the post.

I was thinking compared to diesel, such as spark plugs, ignition, that sort of
stuff. If it were mine it would be getting serviced at normal A/B/C intervals.

Re: [MBZ] big sale on HP elitebook

2020-11-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Keep a close eye on the HP store, as they run specials throughout this time of
year. I got a 17” HP laptop with 16GB of RAM, i5 processor and 480GB SSD last
year for the wife for under $400. I know an HP employee who gave me a heads up
on this, but I’m sure you can watch and find similar deals if you’re persistent.

I’ve used Asus for a number of years and been very happy with them. Avoid
D-Link at all costs, as they’re cheaply built and do a lousy job of keeping
things up to date. I bought one of their routers some years back and within
four months of my purchase they had stopped maintaining the firmware, and it

I think there might have been some confusion with the posts as they crossed,
too.

Yes, I use Kroil as a penetrating lubricant. Great stuff. The Fluid Film I used
to prevent corrosion on the underside of the E320 4Matic. The W210s seem to
immediately rust out upon crossing the Mason-Dixon Line, so I figured it might
defer the inevitable for a few months.

Plus the livestock likes the smell…

Re: [MBZ] 1991 Mercedes 350SDL parts car - $2,500 (Pierson)

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don’t think it’s bad considering the coverage you get for $5. I’ve used it a
couple of times since they started charging and was happy with the results.

I think the change had to put a significant dent in the number of listings they
had. Within a day or two of them enacting the change the number of listings
fell off precipitously.

Definitely put a damper on the bottom feeder stuff. I think a lot of that moved
to FB.

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I fogged all of the chassis cavities with Fluid Film on the E320 4Matic while I
was working on it in preparation for it’s move to the Great White North. I had
to buy a bunch of it when I bought it to do the W111 so I had a couple of cans
left over. Figured it couldn’t hurt, and I won’t use the stuff in Florida.

Re: [MBZ] Low Cost Drawer Liner

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a lot of duplicates of things from accretion over the years. For
example, I have a complete Craftsman screwdriver set that was always in a wall
cabinet I had for my woodworking setup when I had one. Tools were segregated
between garage and wood shop so as not to commingle with things that could be
greasy or have sawdust in them. All of those duplicates are going north.

I don’t, however, have doubles of things like ratchets and socket sets. Some
duplicates, but not complete sets. I’ll buy new for those and keep the dupes in
Florida. I had a pretty good set of standard combination wrenches, but not
metrics, so those will get bought as new up north, too.

All of my MB specific stuff will stay in Florida. I’m not doing any substantive
work on cars in Indiana, at least not intentionally. Worst case scenario
there’s a Harbor Fright nearby, so if I had to make do with something in the
way of hand tools I could snag it there.

Xmas ask is more Lowe’s gift cards so I can get a rolling box to put the tool
box on…

[MBZ] Low Cost Drawer Liner

2020-11-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
For my birthday everyone in the family piled on and gave me Lowe’s gift cards.
So I’m trying to figure out what I can buy from Lowe’s for me that I really
need. It occurs to me as I wander through the store that I could use a tool box
for the new house, as I have nothing to contain tools there. So I found a
really nice five drawer Craftsman upper cabinet that was on sale for around
$200 down from $250.

So I get this tool box home and am thinking about all the duplicate tools I
have that I can put it in. Then I realize I need some drawer liners so stuff
isn’t sliding all over the place.

I know I can get precut drawer liners for big $$$ if I wanted, but I’m cheap in
this regard so I start doing some research.

I found some Duck brand shelf liner in a 20’ x 6’ roll for $9.00 on the Island
of Large Wimmen. Bought two rolls for a total of $18, delivered the next day. I
spent about a half an hour in the garage last night with my carpenter’s square
and a fresh carpet knife and now I have nice, custom fit drawer liners.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010DHSV6O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8=1

This tool box is so nice and new I’m almost afraid to use it. I haven’t bought
a tool box in over 40 years…

2020-11-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
They cover a lot of weird stuff because they have to.

The really lousing thing is the way they screw you in the fine print. Our
latest one has been that prescriptions don’t count toward your maximum out of
pocket. So that means you can go to the hospital and rack up a bill and most of
it’s paid - but you’re still on the hook for whatever isn’t covered for the
prescriptions. Think about how many drugs they give someone during a hospital
stay.

Both of our employers have ditched increases this year and said we should be
happy because they’re going to absorb the increase in insurance costs. Whatever.

House of Ghia used to be the go-to for all things Ghia. It’s not the cheapest,

Re: [MBZ] 1998 S420 Engine has a ticking sound that goes away after driving awhile

2020-11-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Little to none, I suspect, with maybe some accelerated wear on the lifter faces
and cam lobes. There’s not enough oil flowing at idle to overcome the lack of
restriction when the end caps are blown out of the tubes, but once you get
moving things are better. I wouldn’t leave it that way for an extended period,
though.

I did a writeup of the job on my SL500 in the R129 forum on Benz World if you
want to see what’s involved. It’s not a difficult job to do, and while you’re
in there you can replace the timing chain upper guides, too, as they’re cheap
and they have to come off anyway.

Here’s the old ham operator’s page covering the job:

https://www.k6jrf.com/MB_lifter.html <https://www.k6jrf.com/MB_lifter.html>

He mentions replacing the breather tubes while you’re there, mainly because
they’ll be hard as a rock and will break or shatter. The whole set of breather
tubes are around $150 from the dealer, I think. I have a list of all the parts
for my R129 and E420, but they may be a little different for your car.

Coil packs on these V12s are notoriously expensive, as they’re an “all in one”

six coil packs.

Re: [MBZ] front/rear axle gear lubes

2020-11-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This pump, like the cow inseminator, end up being messy as heck. You end up
with all sorts of leftover fluid in it and fighting the hoses on both ends.
I’ve used the cow inseminator pump for doing differentials for years, and it’s
always a mess despite being able to fill a differential in about three uses due
to the volume it can handle. When I went to the little pump that screws on the
container it was so, so much easier, especially from a mess standpoint. Yes,
it’s more labor as far as pumping, but it’s amazingly mess free.

Far easier to use and much less messy than the cow inseminator. A little more

1988-1991 approximately.

Pigeon River valley. Ellwood May Environmental Park. My house was at 3610

Used to catch salmon in the Pigeon River as well. Yum. Just a 5 minute walk
from the house.

Boatloads of them around our former house in Sheboygan, WI. House backed onto a
nature preserve that was a small valley with a stream. Lots of deer, pheasant,
wild turkey, etc., etc. There was a trail from the preserve that came up to our
back yard, and on numerous occasions wild turkey would walk right up the trail
into our back yard where they would feed on seeds we would toss out there.

The kids loved to see them wandering around in the back yard. It was pretty
cool.

That was a beautiful bird. Do you do anything with the feathers?

Re: [MBZ] front/rear axle gear lubes

2020-11-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Both differentials would be Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil. I would use Mobil 1 “multi
vehicle” synthetic ATF in the transfer case. I say that because there is a big
difference in viscosity between 236.10 (original recommendation) and 236.14
(current ATF spec). It’s a difference of 7.0 for 236.14 and 8.5 with 236.10.

I’ve been looking at this closely, as I’m changing the fluid in the E320 4Matic
and the spec called out is 236.10. The Mobil 1 ATF meets this spec.

My Mom and Dad had an irrevocable trust. My brother was the administrator.
Couldn’t have picked a better one, as he’s a corporate banker and very “black

terminated and the assets distributed to us kids.

As I understood it, Dad formed the trust primarily to hold title to their real

They have a “center” in Ybor City, which is a vibrant night life/tourista sort
of area in Tampa. They used to stand out on the sidewalk and approach people as
they walked by, but so many people were abusive to them that they don’t do it
any more. The place is still open, I believe, but they’re not recruiting
outside of the building.

Again, driving through downtown Clearwater is simply creepy. It’s like a ghost

I would also add that our long lost list buddy, Bill Wachmuth, lives in the
town where Miscavige’s wife is supposedly being “held” at a remote Scientology
facility. He and Ruth Ann have seen her around town with her “handlers”.

She did two seasons of it and really ragged on them big time. They’ve got it
out for her like you can’t imagine.

They’re right over in Clearwater and have pretty much killed the city. They own
most of the property downtown and don’t do anything with it because they got
pissed at the city a few years ago when the city wouldn’t sell them a piece of
land they wanted. Their followers set up all sorts of shell corporations and
have been systematically buying up all the real estate.

It’s creepy. If you venture downtown all you see are their creepy converts
walking around in their black pants, white shirts and vests. They look like
zombies.

If you’ve got the time go to the St. Pete Times web site and read everything
they’ve written on them. Leah’s not kidding.

This is a really good article on how they’ve bought up all the real estate
downtown:

Re: [MBZ] OT remember when electronic heath records were thought to be a step forward?

2020-11-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This isn’t exactly dealing with electronic records, but….

Our long time internist’s practice was recently bought out by a major
healthcare provider. For the most part it’s been pretty transparent and little
has changed, which is nice. However…

During your triage or interview with the receiving nurse when you go for your
annual physical, they have a series of “mental wellness” questions, like, “Are
you happy with your life?” or “Do you feel centered?” (whatever the heck that
means!) and other touchy-feely sort of crap like that. The nurse started down
that road with me and I got ugly with her. “But sir, it’s part of your whole
self wellness evaluation”

Nope. Not answering those questions. And back out the ones you started with,
dear.

I stood over her at the computer for a minute and watched her remove my
responses to the first question she had asked. No different than the, “Do you
have any firearms in your house?” question they used to ask. “I don’t know, do
you?” After that response my internist must have redlined that question as I've
never gotten it again.

Geez.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A Life Lesson

2020-11-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Plain probate. Wills, durable power of attorneys, etc., etc. There’s far more
to it, but in general it’s what most people need for it to be done right. And
that’s for a couple (two people.) He does a complete review of assets and how
they’re held, gets all the familia details down, inventory of property, etc.,
etc. It’s pretty thorough.

A trust is about twice that much or more depending on how complicated it will
be.

I don’t know how competitive the costs are compared to other attorneys - our
guy is both a probate and tax attorney, which is why we chose him. I suspect if
you do it with someone who practices only in probate it might be a little
cheaper, but in the long run, who cares if you want to be sure things are right?

Re: [MBZ] OT: A Life Lesson

2020-11-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We have a trust set up in order to essentially bypass probate and convey all of
our belongings, etc., to our children upon our passing. However, I would warn
anyone considering a trust that they can be expensive and complex to set up.
Our probate attorney typically doesn’t recommend them unless you’ve got more
than $500k in assets. We didn’t when ours was set up, but it’s how we wanted
things done, so we bit the bullet and spent the money for peace of mind.

To give you an idea, our probate attorney charges about $2k to do a husband and
wife’s wills, durable power of attorney, and all the related paperwork. He has
a 25 page form you have to fill out in advance of him doing any of the work,
and you meet at least once after the form is turned in to review everything.
Don’t rely on a “do it yourself” will or something like that, as it’s not worth
the potential headaches it could cause for your heirs. We’re comfortable that
things will go as we want them to when we’re gone.

That and it’s a really common part, too, and not terribly expensive. Sort of
like keeping a brake light switch on the shelf.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A Life Lesson

2020-11-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m so sorry to hear that, Scott. Please accept my condolences.

While it’s little consolation, it’s good to know things were set up in advance
so as to minimize the hassle and confusion that often occurs when a loved one
passes. It’s important to make sure the family knows your wishes in advance, as
people often think a will takes care of this. It does not. Wills don’t come
into play until well after one passes in most cases.

We both have very detailed instructions for what is to occur upon our passing.
There are the legal things that our attorney has taken care of as well as more
informal things we’ve written down and put in a place easily accessible to each
other and our children. Once these are done it’s easy to maintain them should
anything change.

We had a similar situation in a previous generation where a surviving sibling
who was not included in their sister’s estate tied things up in court for
several years and got almost nothing when it was all said and done. Ironically,
they were a very successful business owner who had no need for the money - the
only people who made out well in that situation were the probate attorneys.
