Re: [MBZ] Glow plug conversion Q.

2010-11-04 Thread Frederick W Moir

Curt, et al.
My olde '81 Rabbit had a copper strap connecting all 4 plugs (insulated
between) that went to the (puny) timer/relay. Only benefit of separate
wires is even -ish volts-drop-per-meter for each GP and maybe easier
fault location.

My system has a solenoid (big relay) at the firewall. A beefy wire runs from
that to the rearmost plug. Another beefy (10ga?) wire runs from that to the
second to rearmost plug etc. all the way to the front where the wire chain
stops at the first plug. Theres a ground strap there but its not connected to
anything. What do I need to go to the newer plugs, can I just swap them into
this system? Would I be better to make a wire for each plug back to the relay?

Thanks!

Unless it's leaking into the crank case...

Is that possible? I've not had a pump off, so I don't know how
that all fits together - but that could explain how the SLS oil

Re: [MBZ] Weird trans issue - '78 240D

2010-10-21 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, Curt, et al.
By my experience, non-release of clutch is usually something like the
disk not sliding on the input shaft, (rust/dust-filled-oil-goo), or the
T/O bearing is getting tight on the shaft from the same stuff, or dry
seizure of the pilot bearing, (ball, or sintered bronze/brass). The fact
that is is worse cold would seem to point to goo. Low clutch may be worn
paatz, T/O, Cover fingers or worn/Mal-adjusted cylinders.

What is the history of this slow onset? Dwight?

car has been driven some. First thing in the morning I fire it up and it'll go
into reverse (to get out of the driveway) but theres always a little grinding
to do so. Most times I just start in reverse to avoid the grind but lately its
been cold enough I need to scrape the windshield.
Once I've driven enough for the engine to be warm it'll shift in to reverse no
problem...

The clutch engages very low on the pedal throw compared with other MBs I've
driven. Dwight had mentioned his mechanic said the car needed a clutch but I
can't see why other than *maybe* it doesn't disengage well...

Does the '78 have the same trans as my '83? Might be worth pulling the trans
from my '83 which has a replacement clutch with only ~50,000 miles on it.

Re: [MBZ] Weird trans issue - '78 240D

2010-10-21 Thread Frederick W Moir

Curt.
Goo is usually from leaky seals, either engine rear main or trans input
shaft seal added to dust, asbestos/ceramic/organic or just plain old MBZ
dirt. Some transmissions have no input seals, just an oil slinger. The
clutch slave may also be moist from failing seals and dribbling into the
clutch housing, though you would see falling M/C fluid levels and a low
pedal. Cure is to remove trans and Stare and compare, coupled with a
rigorous cleaning of all parts. Someone else's comment about Hypoid oil
in the trans is worth checking out, as it would not be beyond the realm
of some Furrin kaar eggspurtz to screw things up by using the knowledge
gained under the local shade tree! (Beer in hand)

No NOT agree!
If the clutch disc will not slide easily on the splines, it will drag on
the flywheel or Clutch cover, causing crunchy engagement, esp. when
cold, and cause there to be a lot of pedal travel in an attempt to free
up the disc.

Not so?

If Curt's 240D had gunked up splines, it would not cause the symptoms
Curt described in my experience. It would cause unintended popping

Re: [MBZ] Weird trans issue - '78 240D

2010-10-21 Thread Frederick W Moir

Phillip.
The clutch operates by pinching the clutch disc between the flywheel and
the clutch cover.

The clutch cover has heavy springs or a spring disc to perform the pinching.
when the clutch pedal is pushed down the clutch cover retracts slightly
from the clutch disc thus releasing pressure on one side of the disc,
the disc then slides slightly along the splined transmission input shaft
away from the flywheel, thus releasing the pinching of the clutch
friction disc. With me so far?

IF the friction disc does not slide it will drag on the flywheel face.
The pedal travel is a purely mechanical feature dependent upon the
geometry of the assorted mechanical and hydraulic parts.

We are entitled to our version of the truth, even if it is wrong.

Not so.

For the gunk to cause it to not disengage fully, the pedal would
not move all the way. The driver with his foot on the pedal can
supply _way_ more force to push past gunk than the springs can
to return. Thus it's the return/engage, not the release that
the gunk will interfere with.

[MBZ] OT Virus attack on the Information minister

2010-09-05 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, All.
I'm using Norton IS on this 2.4ghz Pentium with 2gb memory, not a fast
machine, the av runs in the back ground with no apparent slow down, and
no virii since installation. The previous series of Norton was a dog, so
AVG was tried, much improvement. It, however, after a few
updates/upgrades, was slower than the Norton it replaced. Tried Avast,
not too bad, lacking some of the better features of a higher end
program. Gave up and went back to Norton, the newer system seems to run
mostly in the back ground, invisibly. I'm happy, for now.

YMMV

2011. Exhaust just replaced, transmission and engine O.K. Good tires.
The body is exceptional for a car this age. Odometer stuck but

I'm thinking tire pressure so this morning I checked, 40psi all around.
Sidewall max says 44 so we're still safe there. I pulled the fronts down to 36
and took a test drive which seemed to show some improvement but its still not
right. Rear shocks are new as are all the rear links. All the suspension seems
to be tight, confirmed by my Indy and the inspection station dude 165,000 miles
on the car.

These are 14 wheels I forget the exact tire size but the sidewalls are big
Maybe this afternoon I'll go all the way down to factory pressure and see what
happens. On my other 190D I was running a bit above factory (factory is 28/32 I
think I was running 30/34) which seemed to no hurt anything. It seems like the 4psi
difference is more important than the actual tire pressure...

Ideas?

pilots excepted) do not check that continually, and it doesn't take long for a
running engine with zero oil
pressure to damage itself.

That oil cooler came off a 240D in Kaleb's yard - back when I had a 240D --
Can you fabricate a new length of hose between the fittings to get it

Lots of options to explore.

No, no cracks, just some ham-fisted as...le cross-threaded the injector

I'm going to try a M22x1.5 bottom tap on it, when the head comes back

Can you set it up in a drill press to hold alignment, and turn the
chuck by hand, maybe using a chuck key for a handle?

It can be fun to get a bottoming tap started straight by hand,,
especially if the first couple of threads are buggered.

All would agree that an at leisure welder in the neighborhood would be

I don't, however, need a hole filled.

Another thought would be to have the old hole welded up and then drill a new
hole and tap it.
My local weld shop guy can weld cast iron, aluminum, steel, stainless. He can't
weld unknown magnesium alloys though.
I was just there today having an aluminum casting filled and drilled. He had a
magnesium dock plate for a forklift there that he had tried to repair. The
welds kept cracking because he couldn't find the right alloy rod/wire/fill rod.
Live and learn.

Every municipality needs a semi-retired welder/machinist to open a shop.

If yours doesn't have one, I am sure my local welder fellow can get it done for
betweeen a hundred to ahundred and fifty bucks.
Send it along and I will get it done for you.

Just another thought.

Hi, all.
Car:- 190DT '87.
Problem:- Viscous fan.
I have a fan center from an M103 that fits into the metal fan blade
assembly and bolts up to the hub for a OM602.
Only caveat is that the control spring has a label on it that indicates
reverse (from OM602) rotation.
Is there any good reason to observe this rotational direction? I'm
assuming that MBZ engineers are much smarter than yours truly and did
this for a good reason.

[MBZ] 602 Rings

2010-05-11 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, All.
Are there any reliable products for freeing up stuck rings?
This is the '87 190DT from Conn. and, though I have it running, it runs
on 4 cylinders only. There is pressure enough to operate the injector on
the dead cyl. (tried two).
The head and intake were worked on recently, very clean etc., though
the assembly of the engine leaves something to be desired. Small parts
in the trunk, exhaust not bolted up properly, missing rear engine hoist
bracket, clip for fuel heater connection missing, etc. This car must
have been inside for most of the last 12 years and only spent a winter
or two outside. The engine seems to be OK except that it sat outside for
at least a year and I just wondered if the rings became stuck during
that time. Marvel Mystery Oil would do no harm and may free up the
rings, however there may be better or more effective treatments
available, if only I were smart enough to know which they are. Hence my
supplication to the genii of this list.

TIA

cylindrical pivot affair on the passenger side of the vehicle and
attaches to the frame. Whatever that is called I need to fix that bit
of wiggle and I'm sure I can fix it for less than the $450 the shop
wanted to fix it for. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: [MBZ] Conn 190DT Update.

2010-05-06 Thread Frederick W Moir

Curt.
Have not had time/courage to restart it, yet.
I'll have to do more checking as there is no history available.
Looking at it, the head is clean and freshly rebuilt looking, the turbo
is pristine, there is no coolant in it and the belt trensioner is
unhooked from the shock.
I have no idea if it was started after the head work, or if it was
started and shutoff in a hurry and sold to some sucker from Lynn MA!

After the surprise the last time, I'm checking very carefully.

Walt.
Thanks. I would have clapped a board over the intake but could not
wrestle the bloody pipe off, cutting the fuel line seemed quicker and it
did stop.

In retrospect, I should have checked everything first.

Fred,

Might want to keep a large CO2 fire extinguisher handy, they work well for
choking out a runaway diesel without collateral damage, just dump into
intake and it'll smother it.

Best of luck getting the monster running again!

Re: [MBZ] Conn 190DT Update.

2010-05-06 Thread Frederick W Moir

Mitch, et al.
True.
That presupposes that I was expecting the engine to run away. It was one
heart-stopping surprise and a mad scramble to shut it off with a non
functioning shut off.
When it ran against the limit at X thousand rpm, it was exciting,
peripherally, whilst attempting to shut it off, I heard the engine go
up another 500 rpm or so, that was fraught with explosive possibilities!

The next attempt will be under more controlled conditions. (I Hope!).
Let's see:-
Co2 extinguisher, check.
Hard rubber ball, check.
Working stop lever, check.
Freed up rack, check.
Fuel line slicing knife, check.
Ability to run the quarter in 0.2 secs, Ummm, nope.

You can always take the crossover pipe off and get a hard rubber ball
to cork the intake if it runs away again.
