Well, you've got a good VIN, but they don't have much on it.
I'd expect more than four events on a 26 year old car. OTOH, if one or
more is a

crash or total loss, it would be worth knowing.

The free version of Carfax says:
VIN: WDBCB20A0DB036338
Vehicle: 1983 MERCEDES-BENZ 300SD
Records: 4 records found in the CARFAX Vehicle History database

This is just down the road from me, so I am compelled to go take a
look. What could be wrong with a W126 trans that doesn't shift into
4th, knowing that the seller has already eliminated the clutch and
throwout bearing as possibilities? ;)

I know, of course, that I need to look for the dreaded single-row
timing chain on the 3.8 liter... is the difference between single- and
double-row chains obvious once I get a valve cover off?

Anything else to look for? I've never driven a gas 126 or a coupe,
but have test-driven 300SDs and SDLs at various times so I have a
rough idea what the car ought to feel like if the suspension is in
decent shape. (And I should expect it to have about the same amount of
grunt as an SDL, right?)

start getting bad vibration from the trailer. I pull off the highway at
the next exit. Bad move, next thing I know Im in the middle of the
ghetto east st louis. I check things out, dont see anything. GEt to
hotel, jack up trailer, I see I have a tire about to explode, the whole
side is bulging out. So, I have a spare tire but its not mounted to a
wheel. I pull the bad wheel off, head off to find a tire place to mount
the spare tire I have, only place I can find is walmart. STand there
for 20 minutes not getting any help, I just leave. So in the morning I
will have to find a tire shop nearby, hopefully open on Sunday.

As I understand it, yes.

Jim, that is a popular misconception. People get wheeled to the curb
with unset broken limbs every day in this country because they can't pay
and have no insurance.

Federal law requires hospitals to treat you if your condition is
life-threatening and you are not stabilized - for example, it would be
illegal to kick you to the curb while you were having a stroke or a
heart attack.

The guy sewing his leg up was hurting and needed medical care but was in
no danger of bleeding out. He would not have gotten free treatment in
a U.S. hospital. In fact, if you do not have insurance, you do not get
free treatment, period. The hospital will still come after you for
payment, send you to a collection agency, etc. If in the end they are
unable to collect from any payment source, that is when it turns out to
be free.

In oklahoma and most other states I have bought cars in, mileage is
exempt on vehicles over 10 years. After that, they dont care how many
miles are on it and no longer report it when you register it.

Hi Loren,
I know you;re just repeating what the seller wrote - but have you or anyone
else heard about such a exemption? I would think a 10 yr old car would be
even more important to have the proper mileage listed?

Have you or other heard of state or federal law exempting 10+ yr old
vehicles? I know all the vehicles I've bought and sold in Va have req'd the
mileage statement - and if it was beyond the mechanical limits such had to
be stated.

Loren's right - sounds suspicious.

There are some things that don't add up to a well maintained car:

Tow hook cover is missing
Something is wrong with the exhaust. It is non-standard, and hangs too
low.

The latch inside the drivers door appears to be broken and hanging down
The parcel net holders behind the seats do not match the seats.
Rust in the spare tire well
Claims to be a dealer, but has only 14 feed back on ebay
States that mileage is exempt from certification, because it is more
than 10 years old.
Looks like he had someone rub armorall all over everything

And that is just looking through quickly

Could be a 200 or 300k mile car that has had the odo messed with.
Careful!

I am in Bar Harbor, overlooking the ocean. I have found a cheap 91
300TE 4matic I want to buy and drive back home. I would probably be in
trouble if I did that. Another update later!!

At lunch with the family I noticed a bit of a gas smell around the car.

Jill's 560 SL.) No drips, but I will have to look into that. I went to
y convertible in storage and stole its electrical part, and put it on
nstead. (It must be love!) Other than a fuel fountain or two it looks
ood. (I put the bad part on my car, to plug the holes at any rate.
lso I had to clean the mouse nests off of the engine, sigh. I've got
ots to do down there
now.)She also reported that her window switch had stopped working, so I
ore that open and cleaned it. It works again.

Why are directing your hate to just gassers. Don't parts fail on your

iesels? Don't window switches go bad on your diesels? Mine did when I
ad a diesel. In fact, fuel injectors went bad and leaked fuel on the
iesels I owned and fuel lines leaked, and on some diesels the IP leaks
nd sometimes, they have to be rebuilt, or resealed, etc.

It sounds like the problem is not that it is a gasser, but it is a

achine with parts that fail and yours may have some age on it and parts
ill continue to fail. If you can find a diesel that never needs
epairs, I need to find one of them.

[MBZ] OT, boot from external drive

2007-06-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin, Laptop
Got a laptop that will not boot, needs OS reinstalled. The internal
removable CD/DVD drive will not read a disk. Can I hook an external cd
drive up via USB and it will boot from that to reinstall?
