Re: [MBZ] OT. 1982 Apple IIe - everything included! $200

2024-05-23 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I was first introduced to the Apple IIE in 1984 in 7th grade. It was my first
computer experience. I learned how to do word processing with the help of a
very robotic sounding voice synthesizer. I was taught how to type in elementary
school, but the computer made things much easier. I remember making a typo and
finding out how easy it was to just backspace and enter the correct letters,

Re: [MBZ] Thinking About This...

2024-03-04 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We had a 1982 AMC Eagle which was the perfect vehicle for winters in the high
desert of Central Oregon. It was a rare Manny Tranny 5 speed with the
relatively gutless 4.2L 258CID in-line 6 cylinder engine. Shortly after we
bought it, the rear main seal began to leak profusely with oil leaking onto the
exhaust and causing the clutch to chatter. Then, it jumped time, so we had to
have the timing chain replaced along with the clutch and the rear main seal.
After that, it ran very well! It had working AC. I changed the shocks, u-joints
and hatch struts on it. About a year later, my nephew needed a car, so my
parents decided to give it to him. He somehow managed to kill it by getting the
tranny stuck between two gears. It certainly wasn’t a race car, but it could
get you just about anywhere you wanted to go in late 1970’s-early 1980’s
comfort.

Re: [MBZ] KLEB CAR!!!!

2024-01-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have ridden in a few Pintos starting in the early 1980’s. The first one was
my sister’s then boyfriend’s 1972 runabout with a manual transmission. It was a
good first car for him. Not long afterward, my dad got the Pinto bug and found
a 1974 Pinto Wagon with no engine. The plan was to put a 1962 Ford Galaxy 260
V8 engine into it, but he couldn’t obtain a title. He then found a 1972 Pinto
wagon 2.0l automatic with a wrecked front end. The now parts car had everything
needed to restore the wreck to family car status. My two older sisters had
moved out, so the much larger 1975 Grand Torino wagon was sold off for some
extra money and replaced by the fuel sipping Pinto. Mom didn’t really care to
drive my youngest sister and I around in a brown and wood panel Pinto wagon
with a blue front end, but she did it for well over a year until Dad found his
next car, a 1971 Buick boat tail Riviera. Nearly 20 years later in around 2000,
Dad got the Pinto bug once again and found a 1978 Pinto wagon, orange with a
primer front end. After test driving it, Mom asked “you aren’t going to buy
that ugly thing, are you?” $200 later, Dad and I were rolling down the road in
the old Pinto. After Dad replaced the timing belt and I installed the new cat
converter, it ran even better! Then, about a year later, he found a $500, much
better looking 1979 Bobcat. We put new ball joints and suspension bushings on
it and bombed it around until the next one popped up, a 1980 Pinto Wagon with
80K original miles! All of these were the later 2.3L engines with manual
transmissions. It was the nicest of all of them. My guide dog, Joel didn’t like
getting into these old Pintos, and he would slide around in the back no matter
what kind of mats we tried. Then, we found a much more suitable vehicle, a 1987
Voyager van. Joel had the back seat all to himself, but he wasn’t truly
comfortable until I took the leap and purchased our first Diesel Mercedes, a
1978 300D. He would lie on the back seat with his head facing the passenger
rear door, and he would rest his chin on the door armrest and go to sleep with
his nose poking forward between the door panel and the grab handle. I wish he
would have made his automotive tastes known much sooner!!!

Since my wife and I are both blind, we’ve been looking forward to self driving
cars. It would be.nice to just get into a car and drive wherever we want to go.
Imagine the blank stares we would get as the car parks itself, and both of us
get out, leash up our Goldendoodle guide dogs and walk away. The scary part is
if/when the vehicle or navigation malfunctions.

Re: [MBZ] Groomers will be able to asses the needed equipment - 2010 Sprinter repo - $25, 000

2023-11-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We’ve had a couple different mobile groomers. The first one in Colorado had an
older T1N Sprinter, Tail Waggin’. The other one in Oregon, Roff Roads, started
out with a converted enclosed trailer in 2019. Business quickly took off, so
quickly in fact that within a few months, he took the plunge and bought a
converted Ford Transit 350, then a new Sprinter that he drove from NC, and then
a second Sprinter. Prices started out at $125 per Doodle, and now, they’re
approaching $300 apiece (and we had four)! I would always cringe as they idled
in the driveway for over two hours, especially the newer Sprinters with DEF/DPF
and OM642 engine. I believe that the OM642 was discontinued after the 2022
model year.

Re: [MBZ] OT - running a small engine out of fuel

2023-04-28 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I’ve always run my 2 stroke engines on my 1/5 scale RC cars dry either by
pinching the fuel line or running it out of fuel. None of them have shown any
ill effects. The manual states that the carb should be dry when the engine is
stored for any length of time. I left my first one with fuel in the carb over
the winter, and come springtime, it wouldn’t stay running. I ended up selling
it, so the new owner had to put a new carb on it.

Re: [MBZ] Chain saws

2023-03-02 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
We have a Worx mini 10” 20v chainsaw that has a pole to convert it into a pole
saw. It was good enough to cut a tree that had fallen onto our chain link fence
last June. The tree was about 5” thick. We had the weed whacker as well with 3
batteries between them. It’s just what we need for occasional cutting and
trimming.

2023-01-19 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have ridden in quite a number of those Ford Foci and Fiestas on Uber and
Lyft rides. Nearly all of the drivers said that the problem existed from the
day that they bought the car. Most of them drove their cars like that since
they didn’t have a choice, and the ones who took them in for repairs, the
problem was never fixed. That leaves an out rages number of vehicles out there
with an unfixable defect, and I hope that Ford will have to pay dearly for that!

I should have mentioned that the temp had risen 9 degrees in an hour with the

Re: [MBZ] OT it’s COLD this morning

2022-12-24 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Here in Lexington, NC, we woke up to an ice cold 50 degree house. It got down
to 7F last night, and at some point in the night, our heat shut off. Our
hard-wired Ecobee 4 t-stat had no power, so my first thought was a tripped
breaker. After a trip out to the cold 38F garage, my suspicion was confirmed. I
reset the breaker, and after a couple minutes, the heat pump fired up. nearly
an hour has passed, and the inside temp has risen to 60F! The heating systems
in this house aren’t quite enough to deal with this bitterly cold weather. We
have a dual zone Trane system with dual heat pumps, one for each level.
Luckily, the upstairs zone was still working. The cold has also exposed the low
quality vinyl double pane windows since cold air comes in around the side and
top seals. I’m hoping there’s a way that the seals can be replaced, or it could
be that the cold weather has shrunken the seals. The house is only a year old.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: EV kisses.

2022-11-12 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Mercedes content: Our 2019 Sprinter had no tactile buttons or knobs for radio
presets either. However, it did have the capability of voice activation so I
was able to say “Play 98.7 FM,” and it would immediately obey my command. I
could also turn on the seat heater, check fuel economy instantaneous/average,
and probably a few other things.
I did get to experience Tesla acceleration since I got an Uber driver who was
more than happy to show off his new Model III. I got to feel the dashboard
touchscreen since I was able to ride in the front passenger’s seat before
COVID. Go kart ride and handling comments are spot on.

adapter and I can't even unplug it.

I replaced the tail light module, and problem was solved, at first. As I
was explaining to the wife what she did, which she then turned it back
to being my fault because I did not tell her how to plug it in, the damn
lights came back on. The module has 4 harnesses that plug into it. I
started pulling them and replacing, and somehow got them off. Lights
were back to working like they should. The module slides into a bracket
which them bolts to the frame. I was going to leave it loose to make
sure it actually continued to work, but then decided to go ahead and
mount it as it was working fine. As soon as I started messing with it,
the lights came back on and I could not get them back off. I looked at
the individual wires coming directly out of the connector on the truck
and none appeared to be melted. I guess I will have to take a closer
look as there has to be something melted within the harness. I hope it
did not screw up the new module, or possibly the old module was not
 really bad.

Lots of short trips in a Bluetec Diesel would certainly cause oil dilution
from fuel which leads to engine wear. Has the owner changed the oil? I’m sure

had a great seller the other day who sold me an awesome X-Maxx 1/6 scale RC
truck that was nearly fully rebuilt with fresh gears and bearings other than
the brushless motor bearings. It had over $300 in upgrades as well as a brand
new body, tires and wheels, and it was priced $300 below retail. The motor
bearings are replaceable, and should make it run smoother and quieter once I
get them installed. I sold two different RC trucks to a guy within a month. I
had a pretty good reputation selling them in Oregon, so I’m trying to do the
same here in NC.

I had a neighbor years ago (late 1980’s) in SoCal who had a fleet of Peugeot
504 Diesels. He started with a 1979, then he acquired a 1978 and finally a 1976
station wagon manny tranny. They were very comfortable and reliable. I wasn’t
into Diesels at the time or I would have tried to talk him into selling me one.
I did like the body style. They were much cheaper to purchase than a comparable
240D since he was able to purchase the 1978 for $900 in 1987 with under 100K
miles.

The fact that the current owner is dumping it so soon after purchase is a huge
red flag. Miles aren’t too high, but the price should reflect the many minor
things that may be more major than the seller is leading on, or they should be
fixed.

Re: [MBZ] Truth On Repairability

2022-04-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
A month ago, we bought a new minivan, a 2022 Toyota Sienna. It has many
subscription based features. There’s a handy Toyota app that allows you to stop
and start your engine, lock and unlock the doors and a few other things. It’s
free for the first year, but $9.00 per month after that. That van has the most
uncomfortable seats. It does get 35mpg combined since it’s a hybrid. After
three weeks, this wasn’t enough to offset the discomfort, so it found its way
to a new owner, paid off the loan, and the 2008 Odyssey with over 164K miles is
going to stay around. The current generation Odyssey vans have a host of
recalls and issues, so we decided to get our deposit back and put some money
into the 2008. It needs some new rubber seals/weatherstrip to fix some water
leaks, it has some front suspension clunks, and it’s going to need
engine/transmission mounts soon. Compared to the new vans, it’s easier to get
into, more comfortable, has better air conditioning, and, best of all, NO CAR
PAYMENT!

Quite a bit quieter than the tires that you had? Just be careful not to loose
pressure or you’ll loose your break petal or is that Peddle?
Just having fun!

Re: [MBZ] $6K Repair or Different Vehicle

2022-03-17 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
I have a friend who has a 2013 Beetle with the same engine that has 92K on the
clock. It sounds like these VW 1.8L turbo engines are ticking time bombs as
they age. It seems to be OK right now, but once it hits 100K, who knows. Maybe,
she should unload it while the used car market is high, and convertible season
is nearly upon us which would help the value as well.

Re: [MBZ] I’m not sure if I heard this correctly

2022-03-08 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
There are plenty of older non DEF trucks running around here in NC. If the
situation changes, and only new trucks get to operate on the roads, there will
be even more shortages, and a huge amount of truckers will be forced to go out
of business or raise prices even higher to afford to buy expensive, new trucks.
