Cool car, though. Hundreds of pounds of chrome, the front grille always made me

My father had 2 Buick Roadmasters with straight 8s back in the 50s. I am
not certain of the year but think maybe they were 1952 models. As you
noted, the tires were not great back then. He was on curvy highway when
it started to rain and the car spun and went into a rock face backwards.
I remember him coming home and handing my mother a chrome ring from
around one of the park lights and telling her that was all that was left
of the Buick. The insurance company gave him a replacement that was
almost identical but with much lower miles on it and he was quite
pleased. I believe he swapped that one for a newer Buick, maybe a 57.

[MBZ] Electric Vehicles

2024-05-07 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I am not a real fan of the electric vehicles being pushed upon us by the
fools who think they are wonderful, but I see enough propaganda on a
daily basis to make me think about them.

Some of you folks are engineers etc and likely have a better grasp of
this sort of thing than I do, so here are my current thoughts on the
subject.

It appears to me that most of the current crop of electric vehicles are
high powered and very quick. Some or perhaps most are also all wheel
drive. They are also generally quite expensive. They require high
powered chargers to charge in reasonable periods of time and the
batteries do not last for the long haul and are expensive to replace.

I am wondering why. Would it not make a lot of sense, if one is trying
to make a wholesale change to the vehicle world to build lesser
vehicles. Use smaller motors that use less power. That should either
extend the range or permit smaller batteries of perhaps both would be
possible. That should also result in lower electrical use for charging
purposes so it would be less expensive to operate them. If the battery
was smaller, it should weigh less and special tires might not be
required and the tires should last longer. Most would not require all
wheel drive so there would be maybe 2 motors rather than 4 of maybe
even, only one motor like we have enjoyed in the past. Smaller batteries
should be less expensive to replace. Maybe they could even be swappable
entities rather than require a lot of work to replace. Despite the fact
that "luxury" cars are  popular, there must be a market for more basic
cars without all of the electronic gadgetry in cars like the Tesla.

Lawsuit accuses former manager at SC Porsche dealership of taking
 bribes for cars

David Wren dw...@postandcourier.com
3–4 minutes

The owner of a Porsche automobile dealership in Charleston is suing
its former sales manager over allegations that he required customers
to make under-the-table payments totaling hundreds of thousands of
dollars to secure the highly sought after vehicles they wanted to buy.

Baker Motor Co., owner of the Porsche Charleston dealership
 on Savannah Highway in West
Ashley, is accusing James Marino of pocketing bribes for high-demand
cars since at least 2022, according to a lawsuit filed in Charleston
County court
.

Marino has not filed a response to the lawsuit, and he could not be
reached for comment. A lawyer for Baker Motor Co. did not immediately
respond to an email seeking further information.

Marino had been sales manager at the dealership for six years before
being terminated in March after the alleged bribery scheme was
discovered, according to the lawsuit.

The dealership "specializes in selling high-end, luxury Porsche
automobiles," the lawsuit states, adding the vehicles "are in high
demand, and there are often numerous potential buyers competing for
them."

A report by Road & Track

states the timeline for ordering a Porsche can be as little as three
months, but "the waitlist for models like the 718 generation Cayman or
even a 992 generation 911 Carrera S can be years long."

"With nearly every Porsche model in high demand, build allocations are
highly sought after and the models that aren't spoken for upon dealer
arrival become highly competitive assets," the magazine stated.

The lawsuit states that as sales manager, "Marino had the final say in
determining which potential buyer would be allowed to purchase these
high-demand automobiles."

Baker Motor says in court documents that Marino's actions were
"intentional, willful, wanton, reckless and malicious." The company
wants a judge to force Marino to repay all of the money he made from
the alleged scheme as well as all of the wages and benefits he
received during his time at the dealership. Baker Motor is also asking
for unspecified punitive damages and legal fees.

this case I think it was actually my fault.

The pins on the front brakes had very little grease left. Pads looked fine but
I think the rotors were cupped, causing some of the pulsing. The pins also had
a coating of dried schmutz, presumably the remnants of the grease. I soaked
them in brake fluid and cleaned with a wire brush and very fine steel wool. I
found I had a spare in my parts bin so I swapped that in for the worst one.

When I reinstalled I coated them with a thick layer of Sil-Glyde silicone pin
lube. I only discovered it a few years ago and clearly needed to put some on
the last time I did these brakes.

The rear pads were worn but the rotors were trashed, big chunks out of them. I
had to spend considerable time cleaning the caliper frame to get the new pads
in. I think that rust jacking had trapped the pads and stuck them to the rotor
which destroyed it.

Anyway when I had the car in for a new timing belt recently they quoted me
$1500 for this job, all in I paid around $250. Took me just under 5 hours all
told and it would have been quicker but after I did the fronts I cleaned up and
took it for a ride which is when I realized I needed to do the rears too...

Of course there would be a fuel use penalty on the NA engine.

My W115 300D doesn't generally feel too anaemic on hills but we in
relatively flat country here on the eastern edge of the prairies. If
feels generally alright on hills unless I have to stop and then climb
the hill.

I have taken the car to the cottage periodically and there is one place
on the highway west bound out of Kenora, Ontario where the road through
town meets the by-pass around the town. There is a stop sign and after
the stop, I have to make a hard left hand turn onto the highway and
climb uphill for half a mile or more. I have a difficult time getting up
to highway speed in that location. The road from the east is a long
straight stretch and there is enough traffic that I will generally have
vehicles behind me wishing that I would get out of their way by the time
I get to the top and start down the other side. This is all 2 lane
highway so there is no real opportunity for them to pass me.

Once that framework has any substantial failure, the forces overwhelm the rest

Should have had bollard like things in the water to deflect so that the

This tale reminds me of an old friend who has since passed on.

His electric razor was not holding a charge so he went to a shop that
services electric razors and bought replacement rechargeable batteries
for his razor. Then went home and installed them but they did not appear
to work, so he took them back out and was on his way downtown to return
them for a replacement set the next morning. On his way he stopped in
for coffee at a shop where a number of us met pretty much daily. He told
me his tale of woe and I asked him how long he had let them charge for
before he tried the razor. There was a sudden look of surprise on his
face and he sheepishly admitted he had not charged them at all. The
batteries were good after he re-installed them and charged them up.

Re: [MBZ] Don't you love when a 30 minute job turns into four hours

2024-03-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
There is no point in beating yourself up over things like this. A shop
might easily have missed the cut as well. It obviously was not something
that was all that likely given the splash pan and your history with the
car. Good job in getting it done. Hope the drain plug cooperates in the
future. Maybe you should consider a drain plug and washer from VW rather
than Autozone?

Randy

On 11/03/2024 10:07 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote:

Wife's car (VW Jetta) has been alerting (annoyingly) about the oil level sensor. It was
intermittent and has slowly gotten to the point that it was alerting every few minutes
while driving. Code was "intermittent implausible value" so I assumed the
sensor had failed, as that is my experience with VWs. Sensors fail.

Ordered one from FCP Euro, watched a YouTube video, easy enough job: drain the
oil, disconnect the sensor, remove three nuts holding the sensor in place, pull
it out, put the new one in, reconnect, refill the oil. Looked like it should
take 30 minutes max.

I had considered that the problem might be a bad connection but the connector
was in place, not loose or damaged. So I went ahead with the sensor
replacement. As I was reconnecting it, out of the corner of my eye I noticed
what looked like a cut in the split-tube cover on the wiring. Sure enough,
there was a cut. How in the heck it happened I don't know. The car has a splash
guard so nothing could have snagged it. I change the oil with the extractor so
I've never had the splash guard off until today. I guess at some point someone
had it off and managed to snag it or slice it and cut into one of the wires.

So I didn't need the sensor, but at this point I've already installed it and
it's all oily so I can't send it back.

I soldered the wire back together and covered the splice with heat shrink
tubing.

Then I notice that oil is dripping from the drain plug. It was dry when I
removed it, and I had torqued it back to spec so what the heck. I tightened it
up more and more until I started to get a little uncomfortable. It has one of
those sealing washers that was pressed on so you can't easily remove it. So I
decided to run to Autozone and get a new drain plug and washer. Drain oil
again, install new plug, refill, and it's still leaking. I finally just kept
tightening it about 1mm at a time until it finally stopped.

Kicking myself for not looking at the wiring more carefully. Would not have had
to drain the oil or change the sensor and would have saved a lot of time if I
had only noticed that cut first.

If so, you should be able to rinse it out of there. Plug the oil drain

No doubt, there would be other hurdles, but if you just wanted the look
of the Rolls, you could likely solve the problems without rebuilding a
Rolls.

I am sure I must have told the story about my mechanic son working on a
vintage Rolls that essentially had no brakes. If I recall correctly it
had some sort of hydraulic setup that ran off of the transmission. Parts
were either unobtainable or so expensive that it made no sense. They
installed a vacuum booster intended for a Chevy Corvette and that helped
a bit. Ultimately, they swapped the left side brake shoes to the right
side and vice versa, so that the leading shoe was opposite of what it
had been, and that helped a lot. My son did not think the brakes were
all that wonderful even then, but the owner was satisfied. He only drove
it in parades or something like that so didn't care that they were not
state of the art.

Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 4Matic - Cold Start Hesitation? *********ADDED INFORMATION***********

2024-01-19 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I don't know if this is similar to what we had in a 1998 F150 with the
4L V6 or not. It had some sort of flap valves in the intake manifold. It
started acting up and my mechanic son, who was driving it at the time,
repaired it. I think all that was wrong with it was that the plastic
clips that held parts of the linkage together, that opened or closed the
valves, had broken. Unfortunately, it took a while to repair because the
clips were located at the back of the engine tight to the firewall and
could not be changed without removing a whole lot of parts. The cost to
repair was minimal apart from the labour which he provided.

Call up somebody like Pierre Hedary and ask him if you really need a new
manifold.

Randy

On 19/01/2024 12:38 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote:

Here’s my take based on older models with what I believe to be the same feature:

Intake air flaps are used to “route” intake air from one source to another in
the intake. If they fail, air only comes from one source, which rarely has an
effect on operation, but may affect economy (think “cold” air versus preheated
air, for an example.)

In some models, the flaps hang up because the shaft or linkage that operates
them fails in some manner, by either breaking or getting corroded from the
elements. They can often cause a Check Engine Light (CEL) when they fail.

That code was one of the original codes which came on over a month ago when the

He said I needed "Intake Manifold, flap shafts, vacuum actuator and linkage"
from Mercedes and the repair would take about 3 hours.
I called a local Mercedes Dealer and he quoted me the following parts
approximately $1,000:
Remanufactured Intake Manifold - Part #272-140-24-01-80Gasket - Part

Part #013-997-90-45-64Hose Injection - Part #117-997-09-82
Anyone else have a similar experience. I wanted to get feedback before I order
the parts. Is it possible that I changed the coil packs and plugs for no
reason when this was the underlying issue from the start?
Lastly I was told it was ok to drive until I make the repairthoughts? The
car just will not pass New York inspection.

We bought it new and kept it a long time but it was not a great car. The
Zephyr I referred to earlier was better in many ways. It was a few years
newer and had rack and pinion steering and handled quite well.

The Monarch handled poorly. It had the old style power steering with the
hydraulic cylinder attached to the linkage rather than the newer style
with the actual power steering box. I think I rebuilt the linkage where
the cylinder attached to a ball type joint 3 times. The rest of the car
was OK. The engine and transmission were fine and it did not rust badly.
It was just not much fun to drive.

My father had the Mercury version - A Bobcat. Bright red, black interior
- automatic which meant it was pretty weak.
I think it was still around when my father died. I don't know what
happened to it. Mother must have sold it or given it away to clear the
yard. It was not a wonderful car but my father always liked good fuel
mileage.

The Ford Fairmont was not awful. One of the car magazines (Car & Driver,
maybe) said it was akin to a domestic Volvo. Very simple car. My father
had the 2 door Mercury version - a 1983 Zephyr - inline 200 CID 6 - two
tone grey with a red interior. It was new when he died and my mother
learned to drive on it as she had never had a licence. She later gave it
to me and I drove if for about 6 months. Unfortunately it came with no
undercoating on it and it was rusting something fierce underneath. The
body and interior did not look like it had ever been used but the bottom
was flaking.

Hi everyone, my name is Dan and I’m a former Pinto owner.

< Hi, Dan! >

Mom got a brand-new 1971-1/2 Pinto full window hatchback, bright orange with
the great 2.0l 4 cylinder engine, four-speed stick, from the local Ford dealer.
She drove it uneventfully until about 1977 or so. Then it went to my older
brother, who is the antithesis of a “car guy”. On a night out with the guys
from the office, while inebriated, he drove it the wrong way down a one-way
street in downtown Indianapolis, and upon realizing his direction conflicted
with traffic, he made a hard turn. Into a 12” concrete curb.

Fast forward to around 1980. I’m recently married, going to school full time,
and working, too. Mrs. Dan is working as well, but like most young couples,
we’re scraping by. For reasons I don’t recall, I needed a car. Brother has
bought a Ford Fairmont (yeah, I laughed when I heard that, too!) and did not
need the Pinto, so it comes to me for some consideration to big brother.

I drive it for about a month and almost go through a set of front tires. ?

Take it to Church Brothers, a very good body and frame shop in Indianapolis.
The verdict is that the frame is tweaked from a hard hit in the right front
corner (that concrete curb did not yield.) Cost me $200 and a day for them to
put the car on their unibody alignment rack, and it was as good as new. I went
to the Powers That Be, our Dad, and pleaded my case, as in big brother knew the
car was defective but sold it to me anyway without disclosing the damage. Dad
ruled in my favor, so big brother had to reimburse me for the repairs. Yeah!

I drove it for a couple of years. Great car, very reliable, certainly spartan,
and economical as heck. The 2000cc engine was a great mill, very popular
amongst the rally Ford Capri crowd, as they were used in Capris of the same
vintage. I polished and ported the head and intake, even placing some baffles
in the intake plenum to enhance airflow. It ran quite well.

Ford chased me down for the recall on the gas tank not long before I got rid of
it. Don’t recall the details, but I know I had no problems selling it at the
time.

[MBZ] more on sunroofs

2024-01-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
My elder son has a late model Toyota Rav4. Not certain of year but
essentially new. They bought it new, had to wait for one to come in to
the dealer and have had it maybe a year or a bit more.

Back in maybe October, the glass in the sunroof broke.  They initially
thought it might be vandalism, but it is likely just one of those cases
where glass decides to blow.

They finally were able to get it fixed in December. Glass places
wouldn't touch it - said it was too complex. The dealer had to do it but
there were no available parts. They finally got the parts. Apparently,
the glass cannot be replaced and the whole unit has to be changed out.

Insurance covered it to the tune of $7,500.

I don't like a sunroof anyway but this is just one more reason to avoid
them.

On my other cars (CL500, CL600) with staggered wheels I have

F 245/45 ZR18 96Y. R 275/40 ZR18 99Y

which makes sense as the first number is width and the second number is profile
(height of tire as % of width) which keeps the total diameters and tires
circumferences the same between front and rear.

The sizes on the E350 puzzle me as it would appear the rear sidewalls
(285x.35=99.75mm) are slightly larger than the fronts (265x.35=92.75mm).

Overall diameters are (18x25.4)+(2xSidewall) == 457.2+R199.5 (or F185.5) =
R656.7 (or F642.7)

for circumferences of R2063 (F2019) which is ~2.2% higher R than F, which would
drive the wheel speed sensors crazy.

Strange. I have not yet driven the car so not sure what the deal will be.

A quick Google search suggests that most of the electricity generated in
OK is by way of fossil fuels so that puts a bit of a damper on the green
side of electric school buses too.

On 08/01/2024 4:55 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote:

Well done, Craig!

I would also posit that as a school district and government entity, they’re
likely not paying anything near $0.20/kWH for their electricity, so I would
expect that amount to be lower.

What if we took your numbers and went so far as to suggest that a typical bus
gets 10 mpg (optimistic) and we’re buying fuel on the spot market at prices
about 10% below retail pump prices? At those projected numbers, you wouldn’t
get very far in a diesel bus.

A fleet operation like this, as others have suggested, is one of the best
business models for an EV fleet, and I would agree as well. I also think that
in a fleet like a bus fleet where you’ve got mechanics and infrastructure that
you’ve got to maintain going to a far simpler setup as an EV would cut down
significantly on maintenance. Just think of how much less you would have to
inventory in the way of consumables and common parts? On the flip side, you’re
going to have to employ some seriously skilled labor, so some costs, such as
labor, could and probably would go up. That would be offset by lower
maintenance costs.

Don’t get me wrong, there are still a LOT of kinks to be worked out in the EV
world, but it seems like some applications make more sense than others,
regardless of where the power is coming from.

This is a case where failure is not acceptable, they MUST be recharged
in the time allowed so the electricity for them to be recharged MUST be
available. We're talking batteries in the 250kwh range, if you're
discharging them, say, 50% daily and there are 10 busses you're talking
1250kwh. Figure 14 hours max that you can charge in, you'll need 89,000
watts per hour or 202a at 440v.

Unless my math is bad, which has been known to happen...

Well, you math is not bad (the actual number is 89286 watts), but the
phrase "watts per hour" is nonsense.

89.286 kilowatts for 14 hours = 1250.004 kWh

However, you also need to account for inefficiencies in generating the
charging current (say 95%) and then the overcharging the batteries need.
For nicads in the 1980s, they needed to be charged for 14 to 16 hours at
their C/10 rate, so 40 - 60%. Say the current batteries need 40%
overcharge, that implies 71.4% efficiencey ( 1 / 1.4 ).

So the overall efficiency from utility AC to battery is going to be

0.95 x 0.714 = 0.6783

So _IF_ the fleet needs 1250 kWh (taking your numbers for it), the utility
will have to supply

  1250
 = 1842.8 kWh
 0.6783

OTOH my math suggests charging that fleet isn't going to cost all that
much...

1842.8 kWh x $0.20/kWh = $368.57

With diesel about $3.75/ gallons, this will buy 98.28 gallons.

Now how much all this relates to the real world remains to be seen, since
we don't have good information on
- How much energy electric buses consume
- The actual cost of the electricity
- How much energy (fuel) the diesel buses consume
- The efficiency of charging and using the batteries
- The propensity of both types of vehicles to break
and the cost to repair them
- Probably something I have forgotten

Do you think it still produces as much power as it initially did?

We had an Amana for many years but my wife began to think it did not work as
well as it had in the past and replaced it.

Since then, we have had a series of them as they don't last as long as the
Amana did.

Spray foam on the outer walls would be the best. Does not hurt to keep a
little heat on under the house as well. My parents had an un-insulated
crawl space, and 2 60 Watt incandescent light bulbs would keep it from
freezing temperatures. My mother kept vegetables under the house and
they did not freeze.

Front seats look pretty good.
Is it just a shadow or is the cam cover black? If black, why? Blow-by?
You need to buy if for $1k and spend the other $9K on repairs and paint.

Almost looks like forced patina. Maybe it was easier to hit it with a

Re: [MBZ] Don’t See These Too Often

2023-12-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I follow a boating forum as well and folks on that forum rave about how
great the Pertronix setups are on old MerCruiser  engines. They start
faster etc. BUT some folks have also noted that they sometimes just die
and leave them dead in the water. Not a quick fix if you have to order a
new unit. Points will more likely give you some warning that trouble is
brewing (like hard starting) and sometimes can be resurrected, at least
temporarily by filing or resetting.

Which one did you use? Was it a capacitor-discharge system?

I need to find a real 12v coil that I can use to replace the 6v unit so
I can get rid of the resistor pack.

Pertronix has coils on their website, but they seem to be geared toward
their capacitor-discharge ignition systems.

Re: [MBZ] Fully restored 1975 300D on BAT

2023-12-15 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Well, If I was able to swap my car for a 300SD in comparable condition,
I might be prepared to do so, but apart from that, I think I am quite
happy to keep what I have. New cars are much too complicated. I like my
simple old car, and barring any bad luck, I should be able to drive it
for the rest of my days.

Rising values (assuming that is happening) are not a bad thing.
Hopefully, that will prevent more from being scrapped and sold for
parts. Repairing rougher vehicles may be worthwhile if the values are
high enough.

I think my car is at least as good at that one. I would need to touch up a few

I think the buyer overpaid.
