Re: [MBZ] 4-MATIC
I've got a 124 4Matic wagon and it's broke. I didn't know when I bought it because the purchase was made in summer on good roads. I didn't know that it was inoperative until the first snow of last winter when my summer tires couldn't keep me going straight. I had new snows put on the car drove like a charm. Since the older 4Matic system was normally RWD, engaging the system at the first signs of wheel slippage, but not in my car, it drove like a normal RWD car with good snow tires. We made it through the winter with no problems at all, plus it was fun to break the rear loose around corners when I wanted by merely applying a little extra throttle upon entry. What joy! I'm told by one former-Benz now indy mechanic that replacing the seals for the first transfer case (which had some seepage upon initial inspection) would be a $500 job. I'm told by another former-Benz now indy mechanic that there is only one shop in North America that can rebuild the tranfer case and it's obviously not cheap. I'm considering merely leaving the car as it is or going the seal replacement route. The only downside to having a RWD 4Matic is the increase fuel consumption, which is horrific compared to my thrifty little VW TDI. Tim 1982 300TD 1991 300TE 4Matic (actually 2Matic) 2000 VW Golf TDI -- Message: 10 Date: Wed, 9 May 2007 19:53:03 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 4-MATIC To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I don't know the answer to your question, but I asked my mechanic once about the 4Matic (he had a TD with 4Matic for sale, don't remember what year it was) and his answer was basically this: Like most Mercedes systems, they work well if they are maintained.? They don't tolerate neglect very well. I'd say that also if I was trying to bail out of one these money pits. I know a local guy who used to own a very pretty 124 4-matic wagon as a business car and he finally gave up and bought a VW diesel (Jetta, something?) and he was one of many on the other MB lists who had replaced transfer cases because of fluid swaps between the transmissions and transfer cases. It's seal failure and maintenance is not the cause but just a bad design. MB gave up on this design years ago and they have a new design (again) on the '07/'08 cars. RLE

Re: [MBZ] new Diesel choices
From: Loren Faeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] About a year ago, there was big talk about several dodge models being available in the 07 year with the bluetec MB engine. Our of curiosity, i stopped at the 'friendly' not-so-local dodge dealer last week to inquire about dodge Diesels (not in pickups). After some searching, they told me that only the grand cherokee was available with the bluetec. And only in the most expensive model. The price? over $48,000 I guess the shareholder revolt has put a damper on allowing MB Diesels in Dog products. Coincidentally, I just read an article at lunch today about the Grand Cherokee CRD and I quote: Remember, the diesel Grand C, while running on a Mercedes-supplied 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, delivers fuel economy benefits, but it's not as clean as Mercedes' latest diesels, the Bluetecs. That superclean DCX diesel technology is able to meet the most stringent emissions standards in the world; the diesel in the '07 Grand C is no Bluetec, so it does not. That said, the Grand C Diesel is very fuel-efficient, and because of this it cuts C02 emissions by 20 per cent. This is how I understood it beforehand as well. Perhaps your dealer, as many are, did not have the correct info? The article also states that the diesel engine is indeed only available in the more expensive trim packages, not the base model. Pity. http://www.globeauto.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070510.whdieselmain-0510/GAStory/specialGlobeAuto/ There's a companion article to it in the same paper: http://www.globeauto.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070509.wh-cherokeereview-0510/GAStory/specialGlobeAuto As far as trucks go, I'd love to have a Chevy Avalanche, but it's a shame they don't put their diesel Duramax engine in it. Only in the standard pickup. Pity. Oh it's available with E85? There's one pump in Canada as I recall, and it ain't in my city. Besides, with the bad press E85 is getting as of late, I'm even more enamored with diesel/biodiesel. Tim 1982 300TD 1991 300TE 4Matic

DONK magazine has appeared on the stands in 7-11 up here in Toronto. I've yet to see any in the streets, though up here it makes sense - ground clearance for the snow. On that note, I took my summer tires in to get swapped at the local tire change place and the manager sold me a set of used original Benz rims that were in better condition than my own. Now I've finally got a summer and winter set of rims! Sweet. Perhaps it's different at other border crossings. Here in the Great Lakes part of Ontario, the border is always over water, so the Canadian border guards are on the Canadian side, and the Americans on the American side. There are no u-turns on a bridge elevated 1000 ft above the water. I could see land crossings being a much different affair. In practice it's quite easy. There is really no issue with making a U-ie as you approach an OUTBOUND border crossing, as you are only (unless the crossing has an alert on) being screened INBOUND when you enter the other country. Until that point you can pretty much do as you like. That may change with the introduction of the combined border crossings, the first of which is now operating I believe somewhere in Ontario? The US and Cdn border services agencies will operate in a single, combined post. This is partly why our bend-the-pennies national government is FINALLY starting to issue sidearms to border agents. I imagine so they can shoot the U.S. agents when they put ketsup on their ice cream, in the shared lunchrooms. Mac

Congrats on the purchase, I'd mulled around getting Jeff's wagon myself to add to my collection, but I'm already strapped for parking spots. I should've been ticketed to death for street parking by now but I don't think they're worried about snow routes with these temps. You can see a pic I took of Jeff's wagon a couple years ago. Geeze, the inlaws visit for a weekend and my email is backlogged again... Zeb: I'm looking to get between 1/2 to 2/3 of what I've already put into it, which is about $7500 Cdn. It's a good driver and can either be a project, which is what I bought it for at the time, or with a good indy, a daily driver. I drove it the 120 kms round-trip to work a couple times lately and it behaved very well. Lately, it's been starting the most reliably since I've had it, probably because my indy replaced the old alternator, but the warm temps haven't hurt. It likes the block heater on cooler mornings though. If you want to PPI it, feel feel to email me offlist. Kevin: I know exactly what you're saying. The wife has a particular fondness for the 123, though she's never driven it. She likes the antiquity and the ride quality, which is actually nicer than my 124. It just floats over bumps while the 124 has a stiffer ride. Gotta love the taka-taka-taka of the OM617 engine too. This is one car I don't mind driving slow, but the 124 is much nicer at higher speeds. Too bad it needs some work - stalling at idle when warm and a worn wheel bearing in the rear, I think. Otherwise a fine car. [MBZ] Wipers
I bought a new refill windshield wiper blade for the 124 today thinking I'd be smart and change it out instead of replacing the whole assembly, saving myself a few bucks. I got the old wiper rubber out and tried to install the new one but the rubbers are different between the old and new. What's with that? The parts guy looked at the VIN to get the right part. They both have two grooves running on either side along the length so that it can slide in place, but the new one has blind ends - the bottom groove doesn't go all the way to the ends. I wasn't able to relocate the clip and the two long metal rods from the old one to the new rubber. I'm thinking I should just return the refill to the dealer and go buy a whole assembly at the auto parts store for half the cost. Tim 1982 300TD (still for sale) 1991 300TE 4Matic

Re: [MBZ] Block Heater
Some good points for sure, but my car lives outside. I've got a single-car garage and it's where the motorcycles sleep. Your answer is in line with what my coffee time mechanics told me just now (I have morning coffee with the guys from the Cadillac shop across the road). The youngest guy described all the variables that you just did, but in the end they three guys actually gave an average value of 60-70 C or 138-158 F. It was explained that the block heater is generally aimed at the #1 piston and that some of the newer Cadillacs up here have a second block heater at the other end of the engine. How does this compare to the W123? Either way, the temperature is more than I suspected. I figured it'd be just a hair above freezing, but now I see it's actually roasty warm, more than a hot summer day in Toronto. I imagine having a high temperature allows heat to migrate throughout the engine block, adding to the overall effect. I sweat it started better this morning than on a summer day without the heater. Maybe I should've been plugged in the whole year round? I got it for almost half of the going price and it's in pretty good condition. The mileage is pitiful around town (16 mpg) but goes up to a more respectable 22 mpg on the highway. I'm certainly no luddite - I've had a computer since 1982 and my current house is wired to the max. I can even understand wanting to geek out a car - I've got a home PC that was installed briefly in a car as an MP3 player in the pre-iPod days. But I love older cars for their simplicity. [MBZ] Bathing a new Benz?
Well Duh. Glad my W123 isn't susceptible to those issues. Tim 1982 300TD Moby -- Forwarded message -- Jim Grant's Tech Tips '96 Mercedes S420, Engine Bath Q: I washed the engine in my '96 Mercedes S420, using Gunk engine degreaser and now my car is running rough. I tried driving it on the highway, but now the check engine light is flashing. I looked under the hood no leaks of any kind. Nothing looks out of place, what can be the remedy? I would like to know the location of the computer box on these cars? A: Bathing an engine in today's vehicles is asking for big problems if care is not taken. Mercedes, who prides themselves in their electronic advancements is about the last car I'd ever dream of spraying with degreaser and hosing off. It is just plain out right asking for trouble and you may have just got yourself some. Your model Mercedes has a coil over ignition system. Due to the location of the coils on the engine, it is possible to swamp them with degreaser and water. The spark plugs set down in a tube, with a spark plug connector (looks like a spark plug wire boot) connecting it to the ignition coil that sets on the top. Degreaser and water will allow the spark to jump to ground and not fire the spark plug. It is critical that you inspect the ignition system and any other electrical connectors or components that you may have swamped with degreaser and water. It is essential that the degreaser and water be removed, cleaned and the components dried. If not the degreaser will cause damage to the components requiring replacement. The engine computer is located on the passenger side back corner of the engine compartment. I hope for you sake that degreaser and water didn't get in the box that houses it. The next time you want to clean your engine, may I suggest some wipes?

Easy. My parents have a 120V electric blower fireplace insert for their wood fireplace. When the ice storm hit and they were without power for 3 days in the dead of winter, so my dad plugged the Radio Shack power invertor into the 12V lighter in his Cadillac (with a 350 V8 of course) and ran an extension cord into the house. Then he plugged the fireplace insert into the cord. It didn't heat the -entire- 3500 sqft house, but enough rooms that they could get by.
