[MBZ] 1982 300TD F/S

2008-08-13 Thread TimothyPilgrim
Anybody need a W123 wagon? It's in rough but running condition, currently
near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. If nobody inquires immediately, the local
dealer's getting it for a song. I'm not interested in arranging long
distance transport. I'm either looking for a somewhat local buyer or someone
willing to pick it up. I'm also not parting it out.

Photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/timothypilgrim/sets/72157594304858174/

The paint is worn and not nearly as nice as in the photos, but who knows, it
might just buff out. It fired up on the first try the other day after
sitting all winter.

Re: [MBZ] 4-MATIC

2007-05-10 Thread TimothyPilgrim

I've got a 124 4Matic wagon and it's broke. I didn't know when I
bought it because the purchase was made in summer on good roads. I
didn't know that it was inoperative until the first snow of last
winter when my summer tires couldn't keep me going straight. I had new
snows put on the car drove like a charm. Since the older 4Matic system
was normally RWD, engaging the system at the first signs of wheel
slippage, but not in my car, it drove like a normal RWD car with good
snow tires. We made it through the winter with no problems at all,
plus it was fun to break the rear loose around corners when I wanted
by merely applying a little extra throttle upon entry. What joy!

I'm told by one former-Benz now indy mechanic that replacing the seals
for the first transfer case (which had some seepage upon initial
inspection) would be a $500 job. I'm told by another former-Benz now
indy mechanic that there is only one shop in North America that can
rebuild the tranfer case and it's obviously not cheap. I'm considering
merely leaving the car as it is or going the seal replacement route.
The only downside to having a RWD 4Matic is the increase fuel
consumption, which is horrific compared to my thrifty little VW TDI.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I asked my mechanic once
about the 4Matic (he had a TD with 4Matic for sale, don't remember
what year it was) and his answer was basically this: Like most
Mercedes systems, they work well if they are maintained.? They don't
tolerate neglect very well.

I'd say that also if I was trying to bail out of one these money pits. I know
a local guy who used to own a very pretty 124 4-matic wagon as a business car
and he finally gave up and bought a VW diesel (Jetta, something?) and he was
one of many on the other MB lists who had replaced transfer cases because of
fluid swaps between the transmissions and transfer cases. It's seal failure and
maintenance is not the cause but just a bad design. MB gave up on this
design years ago and they have a new design (again) on the '07/'08 cars.

Looks like a nice car. Silver exterior grey interior, serviced here in
Wichita its whole life except for one year when it was in Houston.
While it was in Houston - the owner's daughter brought it to Jiffy Lube
and they somehow screwed up the oil change - hence the factory rebuild
engine.

Re: [MBZ] new Diesel choices

2007-05-10 Thread TimothyPilgrim

From: Loren Faeth [EMAIL PROTECTED]

About a year ago, there was big talk about several dodge models being
available in the 07 year with the bluetec MB engine.
Our of curiosity, i stopped at the 'friendly' not-so-local dodge
dealer last week to inquire about dodge Diesels (not in
pickups). After some searching, they told me that only the grand
cherokee was available with the bluetec. And only in the most
expensive model. The price? over $48,000 I guess the shareholder
revolt has put a damper on allowing MB Diesels in Dog products.

Coincidentally, I just read an article at lunch today about the Grand
Cherokee CRD and I quote:

Remember, the diesel Grand C, while running on a Mercedes-supplied
3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, delivers fuel economy benefits, but
it's not as clean as Mercedes' latest diesels, the Bluetecs. That
superclean DCX diesel technology is able to meet the most stringent
emissions standards in the world; the diesel in the '07 Grand C is no
Bluetec, so it does not. That said, the Grand C Diesel is very
fuel-efficient, and because of this it cuts C02 emissions by 20 per
cent.

This is how I understood it beforehand as well. Perhaps your dealer,
as many are, did not have the correct info? The article also states
that the diesel engine is indeed only available in the more expensive
trim packages, not the base model. Pity.

http://www.globeauto.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070510.whdieselmain-0510/GAStory/specialGlobeAuto/

There's a companion article to it in the same paper:

http://www.globeauto.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070509.wh-cherokeereview-0510/GAStory/specialGlobeAuto

As far as trucks go, I'd love to have a Chevy Avalanche, but it's a
shame they don't put their diesel Duramax engine in it. Only in the
standard pickup. Pity. Oh it's available with E85? There's one pump in
Canada as I recall, and it ain't in my city. Besides, with the bad
press E85 is getting as of late, I'm even more enamored with
diesel/biodiesel.

OK, you got your Donks, Boxes, and Bubbles. A Donk is an older Impala
(the impala emblem has been rechristened a donkey, hence donk), a Box
is the squarish version, mid 80s?, and the bubble is the more rounded
full-size version. Scrapin da sky is da word yo.

When you donk your ride, you put a 4 or 6 or 8 lift on it, some 22s or
24s or even 26s (twennytwos or twennyfos or twennysixes) and a serious
garish paint job wif some bling unomisane. They actually look kinda
cool. It appears to have started as a southern phenomenon, white boys
using their jacked up truck knowledge and bros doin some stylin, now is
showing up among the low-rider community as another style. I've seen a
few the last coupla months here in Htown, driven by some bros and
vatos. The paint job and wheels are the key factors.

I know the story. I grew up in a buy-local house with both parents
being union reps. We were a GM family going through lots of GM
vehicles as dad got a new one every 3 years. That was impressive in
the days before personal leases were popular. Now I own 3 German cars

Perhaps it's different at other border crossings. Here in the Great
Lakes part of Ontario, the border is always over water, so the
Canadian border guards are on the Canadian side, and the Americans on
the American side. There are no u-turns on a bridge elevated 1000 ft
above the water. I could see land crossings being a much different
affair.

I just found a cool map showing where the main freight flow in and out
of Canada is...

No and yes. In practice it's quite easy.

There is really no issue with making a U-ie as you approach an OUTBOUND
border crossing, as you are only (unless the crossing has an alert on) being
screened INBOUND when you enter the other country. Until that point you can
pretty much do as you like.

That may change with the introduction of the combined border crossings, the
first of which is now operating I believe somewhere in Ontario? The US and
Cdn border services agencies will operate in a single, combined post.

This is partly why our bend-the-pennies national government is FINALLY
starting to issue sidearms to border agents. I imagine so they can shoot the
U.S. agents when they put ketsup on their ice cream, in the shared
lunchrooms.

Zeb: I'm looking to get between 1/2 to 2/3 of what I've already put
into it, which is about $7500 Cdn. It's a good driver and can either
be a project, which is what I bought it for at the time, or with a
good indy, a daily driver. I drove it the 120 kms round-trip to work a
couple times lately and it behaved very well. Lately, it's been
starting the most reliably since I've had it, probably because my indy
replaced the old alternator, but the warm temps haven't hurt. It likes
the block heater on cooler mornings though. If you want to PPI it,
feel feel to email me offlist.

Kevin: I know exactly what you're saying. The wife has a particular
fondness for the 123, though she's never driven it. She likes the
antiquity and the ride quality, which is actually nicer than my 124.
It just floats over bumps while the 124 has a stiffer ride. Gotta love
the taka-taka-taka of the OM617 engine too. This is one car I don't
mind driving slow, but the 124 is much nicer at higher speeds. Too bad
it needs some work - stalling at idle when warm and a worn wheel
bearing in the rear, I think. Otherwise a fine car.

I bought a new refill windshield wiper blade for the 124 today
thinking I'd be smart and change it out instead of replacing the whole
assembly, saving myself a few bucks. I got the old wiper rubber out
and tried to install the new one but the rubbers are different between
the old and new. What's with that? The parts guy looked at the VIN to
get the right part. They both have two grooves running on either side
along the length so that it can slide in place, but the new one has
blind ends - the bottom groove doesn't go all the way to the ends. I
wasn't able to relocate the clip and the two long metal rods from the
old one to the new rubber.

I'm thinking I should just return the refill to the dealer and go buy
a whole assembly at the auto parts store for half the cost.

Some good points for sure, but my car lives outside. I've got a
single-car garage and it's where the motorcycles sleep.

Your answer is in line with what my coffee time mechanics told me just
now (I have morning coffee with the guys from the Cadillac shop across
the road). The youngest guy described all the variables that you just
did, but in the end they three guys actually gave an average value of
60-70 C or 138-158 F. It was explained that the block heater is
generally aimed at the #1 piston and that some of the newer Cadillacs
up here have a second block heater at the other end of the engine. How
does this compare to the W123?

Either way, the temperature is more than I suspected. I figured it'd
be just a hair above freezing, but now I see it's actually roasty
warm, more than a hot summer day in Toronto. I imagine having a high
temperature allows heat to migrate throughout the engine block, adding
to the overall effect. I sweat it started better this morning than on
a summer day without the heater. Maybe I should've been plugged in the
whole year round?

Computer-controlled clutches of some kind inside the center
differential, making the front/rear torque allotment variable. As
Craig points out, this is a far more complicated AWD approach than the
ones used at the time by Audi (a simple open differential with manual
either-or lockup) and BMW (a heat-sensitive viscous clutch like the
ones used on our engine fans).

Q: I washed the engine in my '96 Mercedes S420, using Gunk engine
degreaser and now my car is running rough. I tried driving it on the
highway, but now the check engine light is flashing. I looked under
the hood no leaks of any kind. Nothing looks out of place, what can be
the remedy? I would like to know the location of the computer box on
these cars?
A: Bathing an engine in today's vehicles is asking for big problems
if care is not taken. Mercedes, who prides themselves in their
electronic advancements is about the last car I'd ever dream of
spraying with degreaser and hosing off. It is just plain out right
asking for trouble and you may have just got yourself some. Your model
Mercedes has a coil over ignition system. Due to the location of the
coils on the engine, it is possible to swamp them with degreaser and
water. The spark plugs set down in a tube, with a spark plug connector
(looks like a spark plug wire boot) connecting it to the ignition coil
that sets on the top. Degreaser and water will allow the spark to jump
to ground and not fire the spark plug. It is critical that you inspect
the ignition system and any other electrical connectors or components
that you may have swamped with degreaser and water. It is essential
that the degreaser and water be removed, cleaned and the components
dried. If not the degreaser will cause damage to the components
requiring replacement. The engine computer is located on the passenger
side back corner of the engine compartment. I hope for you sake that
degreaser and water didn't get in the box that houses it. The next
time you want to clean your engine, may I suggest some wipes?

Easy.

My parents have a 120V electric blower fireplace insert for their wood
fireplace. When the ice storm hit and they were without power for 3
days in the dead of winter, so my dad plugged the Radio Shack power
invertor into the 12V lighter in his Cadillac (with a 350 V8 of
course) and ran an extension cord into the house. Then he plugged the
fireplace insert into the cord. It didn't heat the -entire- 3500 sqft
house, but enough rooms that they could get by.

In Montreal, where power was out for weeks, they parked diesel
locomotives in the downtown streets to serve as generators for the
core buildings.

clowns at MBCA would be interested in a posse of old MBs making that trip.
Who knows what could become of it. I'm thinking a good rendezvous point
would be the poit where we'd cross into Canada...we could have our Northern
Bros (Jeff, Timothy, Randy etc) meet us there and welcome us to the other
side. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a diesel MB RV thing...I'm not
 much of a tent camper.
 Keeptrack of me. I'm interested.

Nope. You'll have to live in an airport like Tom Hanks.

They do a thing out here each year, the Copperstate 1000 (or something like
that), which is not a rally...it's just vintage cars going roundy roundy in
Arizona. They have sponsors galore. I'd bet we'd be surprised at the
sponsors we could get. We'd have to think outside the box. I will get in
touch with those Copperstate dudes and ask them how they go about getting
sponsors for something that isn't a race or a rally. I'm sure they have good
ideas and methods. Our possibilities could be Mobil 1, Hengst/Mann Filters,
Bosch, Michelin, etc. Could go into REI (camping gear) and stuff like that.
I'm sure, once we get something tenativly hammered out, Chuck would be happy
to speak to Mr. Frank Barrett. Chuck is a very benevolent, diplomatic human.

Suppliers? Some of their best products are produced in Ontario:

Dodge 300, Magnum and Charger
Chevy Impala, Silverado
Ford Freestar

That's only some from the big 3. There are lots of Asian cars from here too.

There's a serious tug-of-war over this stuff. One of the strongest
forces pulling for keeping the borders open is the Big Three in
Detroit. They have suppliers in Ontario, and thanks to modern
just-in-time delivery production methods, border delays hit them
hard. The Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor is the busiest
 crossing on the northern border.

I concur. My brother just spent six weeks in SA and drove a
