We did a test drive for work, driving a loop around most of the state: Jacksonville - Daytona Beach (during bike week) - St. Petersburg - Naples - Miami Beach - Cocoa Beach - Jacksonville. Highlights of the trip were visiting folks along the way. Had a great dinner with Dan Penoff and his son Stu, and got to treat them to a ride in a Maybach. Dan and I haven't seen each other since the days of the Rusty Qs and it was great to catch up and share stories. Next up was Miami Beach for four nights, which meant visiting with Gary Hurst. We shared a few meals and drove around quite a bit. Gary in person, for those who haven't met him, is great experience. I always look forward to seeing him. And finally I had dinner with Pierre Hedary and his sister Marie on Tuesday, followed by a visit to his shop on Wednesday with the Germans. They're both gracious hosts and we had a great time. I could hang out there for a week I think. His shop holds many treasures, including a 1967 300SEL, very similar to my car. I'm a bit surprised by my busy social calendar over the trip... its a reminder of what kind of community our hobby can create. Really feels cheesy and cheap. Tools required: Torx 30 driver, with a bit of a long neck to be able to reach the two screws that hold the airbag in place. 10mm hex driver, on a breaker bar or wrench with a cheater bar. I had the counter guy check to see if the steering wheel from the '91 300CE was compatible, and his 'puter said that almost all 124 models up through '93 were compatible, so I pulled the wheel and airbag (and a few other bits) and the wheel was $10, the airbag $40. I just checked the EPC, and according to MB, the CE model steering wheel is only compatible through the end of model year 1991. Re: [MBZ] OT: Trailer welding followup
ATTABOY! Wilton Curt Raymond via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: I wanted to circle around and let you guys know I welded the trailer jack back onto my trailer today. I found that to weld the relatively thick metal of the jack to the thinner trailer tongue I wanted to use all the heat my mig had and I actually used the same wire speed I usually use for sheet metal. I used much slower movements of the gun and for the first time ever I could actually see and control the puddle producing the highly desirable stack of dimes effect. To make that work I found I needed to push the d impossible on the underside which I ended up leaving un-welded. I spent more time on fit-up this time and got the jack plate tighter to the tongue which made for better welding since I wasn't spanning any gap. The jack is poorly designed for that, the plate is actually two pieces hot riveted together with the rivet heads standing 1/32 proud of the back. Typical Chinese poor design, they also forgot to give a relief hole at the bottom of the jack so it filled with water and split. Fortunately the split doesn't effect the operation of the jack. We have one at camp on the bush hog that doesn't work well because of the split. Anyway while I was at it I re-welded the broken tab for the anti-tilt pin and got it aligned better so I can get the pin out easier. I still have to tap the pin into place but I can get it out by hand. While I was working on that I realized the front driver's side corner had rusted out and was hanging precariously, held together by the trailer deck. A piece of angle iron is temporarily shoring that up but in the spring I'll need either to strip the trailer down and rebuild it or buy a new trailer. I'm leaning toward stripping and rebuilding since then I'll know everything was done right and I can put a good coat of anti-rust on it. With a used trailer you never really know what you're getting until it fails. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. While it was a bit of an ordeal working in the attic, as the location where this went was in an area close to the bottom of the roof, for the most part it was pretty straightforward. My only complaint, and it is a complaint, was that the “length” of the tube provided was not as specified in Velux’ literature. I’m taking them up on this to see if I can get some relief, as the alternative is to spend $50 to buy another 2’ piece to make up 3” of length. Their literature says that the model I bought is 48” long, however, I only had a distance of 42” to use, and the tube came up 3” short. Not good. For now I am either going to use some foil tape back to front to make up the gap so it’s closed up temporarily, or possibly use a piece of aluminum flashing, I haven’t decided yet. Despite the gap the amount of light in the room is amazing, even with the sun not fully covering the opening yet. As it gets higher in the sky it will be interesting to see how much brighter it gets.
