USE YOUR DELETE KEY** Can anyone suggest a good way to transfer $US to the daughter in Spain (euros) without getting raped by exchange fees, wire transfer fees, etc.? At the airport on Monday we bought this pre-paid debit card thing, and I put some money on it, and had to add some today so she could pay a rent deposit, etc. The fee on that was pretty high (like 4.5%) so I am trying to figure out a better long-term method. Set up a local bank acct and transfer $$-euros somehow, avoiding wire xfer fees? Keep using this debit card thing? She will be there for 6 months, I don't want to keep getting screwed by the banks. (OK that last wish is probably futile, but you get the idea) The banks here are totally useless in assisting with this. One would think it would be a simple thing to do, since people do move around and travel these days. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

What Rick said + The only non-rapacious conversion rates are the CC companies (or using a debit card) When #1 Daughter spent a year in the Fatherland, we sent her equipped with a CC and a DC. There were no problems. If your daughter is already there, and there is no time to send a card via mail, then go to the closest walmart and ask them what they can do. I know they are in France and Germany, but don't know about spain. Wally land can transfer money store to store or something like that. The local bank or credit union are also possible, but fees are usually pretty steep. She has a debit card on an acct linked to ours, did not get her a CC, should probably do that and send it along. The banks seem to charge some sort of intl fees, and the local ATM some withdrawal fee, but the exch rates seem pretty good. She was supposed to do all this, and got frustrated with the banks' inabilities to answer simple questions. I'll look at it some more. She can probably do just fine with the DC only, however the ATM fees are always there. (fees amy be lower at wallyland. Again, if she is in/near a big city and there is a wallyland, there are some options there. One thing I forgot to mention, is that we had the bank put transaction limits and daily limits on the DC that we set. On the CC, I think we were able to also get daily limits set to our spec. I lived in Canada 5 years and was paid in US funds. We banked in Canada with a bank that had US branches, so we could deposit the US funds and have it converted to $ CAD with minimal fees. There must be a Spanish bank with branches in the US or vice-versa that would work. Also, we often use American Express CC for spending in a foreign country and I believe the % they take is much lower than the 4.5%. HTH. PayPal does international transfer as well, and you can setup a secondary account inside the main one in most any currency. You only pay a conversion fee when you transfer it between the sub-accounts, and it's minimal last I checked (usd to cad, and one euro transaction. You can also get a debit card linked to your Paypal balance, so that is an option. A bank that I have a Mastercard account with: http://www.tnbonline.com/ recommends www.xoom.com for sending money worldwide up to $2999.00 Their charge is $4.99 for France and Spain. Xoom.com claims: Cash pickup at thousands of locations. Direct deposit into a bank account. Cash delivery to your recipient's home. I've had a Mastercard account with Town North Bank in Dallas for several years and found them to be exceptional with their services and low priced in handling that account, so I suspect that Xoom.com would also be reliable since TNB recommends them. However, since Xoom.com obviously makes their money on the float, they may be slower than other methods of transfer. So far, I haven't had occasion to use Xoom.com.
