[MBZ] Does Anyone Have Wireless Broadband Internet?

2008-06-01 Thread LWB250
I'm looking to add wireless broadband to my current
Verizon plan, but I'm not terribly pleased with their
coverage or the cost. For the most part Verizon has
the best coverage of just about all the carriers, but
I'm more interested in hearing from anyone who has
wireless broadband and their direct experiences with
it...

Talk to me...

Do you mean cellular wireless aka EVDO?
If so, you're a couple of months late for the Verizon bandwagon.
Alltel and Sprint charge $60 a month unlimited, Verizon now charges $60
a month for the first 5GB, with an incredible $0.49 a MB overage fee.
That's right, 5GB costs $59.99, but 6GB costs $549.99.

Best way for you to learn is probably the way I did it, spend a day or
two reading http://www.evdoforums.com/

What I ended up doing: I bought a Starcom UM150 (alltel version) from
an eBay seller (one that couldn't be sold as new because somebody returned
it during the 14 day trial period) for about $75, and activated it with
a referral from an alltel customer (saved her $25 but didn't help me any).
I may have had to pay for my modem, but I'm contract free and can dump
my $61.26 per month bill at any time.

Oops, I just went to the forum, and found out that the rumor mill is running
with predictions of Sprint limiting your usage. I know that Sprint has been
messing with my roaming rights for the last week or two, which is a huge pain
when my modem locks into a Sprint tower and Sprint won't let me log in. So
far it's only happened once during trading hours, and I got it to hook up
to an Alltel tower by turning it off and back on.

We use both Sprint and ATT at work. Neither one covers the whole
State, but we get more coverage by selectively using them. Neither one
provides great service. You need a better signal for good data speed
and a solid connection than you do for voice. The higher speeds are
only available in the metro areas, and somewhat along the Interstates.
It's more like a 56K modem everywhere else.

I have it thru Comcast but because of the signal I went to ethernet
connections. I had a reported speed of 8Mbs (I think that's how it's
measured) with wireless and 100mbs with the ethernet. We moved the
desktop to a different room making it easy to run the ethernet thru the
closet wall to my laptop.

Anyway - that's my experience -

- We share an air card at work for travel. In general, it works pretty
well, except that I can never seem to get it when I need it. Slower than a
wired connect, but a helluva lot better than dialup. Works pretty good when
you are in a meeting at somebody else's office and can't use their internet
connection due to security. Nowadays, I don't stay in hotels that don't
offer free broadband anyway, so that's not an issue.

- Here's a thoughtI also have a Verizon Blackberry that I can connect
via USB cable to my PC and it acts as a wireless broadband connection. I
haven't had too much time to play with it, but so far it looks promising.
As near as I can tell, you can add it for about $30/month to your regular
Blackberry bill. The company pays for mine, so it's a simple matter of
getting the boss to spring for it based on a wild assed guess about how much
it'll cost ;-). All of our company's users are lumped into one big pool for
minutes, and the network guys tell me the impact on usage would be
negligible.

HTHYMMV..
