Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?
Craig, This is the outer bushing for the spring link on rear suspension (aka lower control arm). The bushing is actually pressed into the wheel carrier, not the spring link; sorry for the confusion. I highly recommend this tool - really makes the job sooo easy. The old bushings were REALLY loose and sloppy, and easy to move around with finger and thumb. New bushings are very stiff compared to the old. I think that probably 50% of the negative camber in my car's rear suspension was due to these old bushings. -Max From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com on behalf of Craig Sent: Wed 11/24/2010 12:48 PM To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool? Got the tool last night; it works really well! The right tool for the job makes like so nice... http://www.toolsource.com/advanced_search_result.php?search=1query=m008 5x=0y=0 I only had time to do one bushing, which took me about 30 minutes. We'll see how the other side works out - I'll bet that I can do it faster than 30 minutes. This tool has a thrust bearing in the pull side of the tool, and fit/finish were about 9 out of 10. Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?
Looks like my china-bating line in the original email has un-done my original intent - get input on the usefulness of this extractor/pressing in tool. So all the 124 owners and 201 owners on this list are too frugal to spring for the $100 for this S.T. extractor? Perhaps I can re-sell once I'm done for 50% of my cost? I'm realizing that if I had access to a lathe, I could probably copy these designs and make most of my own tools for far less in material cost than these prices. Labor cost is another issue - I figure my labor rate is $55 per hour, so I'd have to make the tool in less than two hours or so. I'll bet a proficient machinist would only need about 15 to 30 minutes. -Max From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com on behalf of Craig Sent: Sat 11/13/2010 2:31 PM To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool? Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?
I suspect that those tools are hardened - you'd need a precision grinder instead of a lathe, or beable to harden mild steel after you turned them on the lathe. If you buy ST extractor, I'll buy it after you use it for 50% --- On Sat, Nov 13, 2010 at 2:15 PM, Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310 meade.m.dil...@navy.mil wrote: Looks like my china-bating line in the original email has un-done my original intent - get input on the usefulness of this extractor/pressing in tool. -Max-- OK Don 2001 ML320 1992 300D 2.5T 1990 300D 2.5T 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

OK, already ordered it. I'll report on it's usefulness, and then you've got first dibs once I'm done with both cars. Only condition is if you sell it, advertise it here first. -Max From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com on behalf of OK Don Sent: Sat 11/13/2010 3:29 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?
