Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?

Craig,

This is the outer bushing for the spring link on rear suspension (aka lower
control arm). The bushing is actually pressed into the wheel carrier, not the
spring link; sorry for the confusion.

I highly recommend this tool - really makes the job sooo easy. The old
bushings were REALLY loose and sloppy, and easy to move around with finger and
thumb. New bushings are very stiff compared to the old. I think that probably
50% of the negative camber in my car's rear suspension was due to these old
bushings.

I'm glad that it works well.

This tool has a thrust bearing in the pull side of the tool, and
 fit/finish were about 9 out of 10.

Better, then, than the tools I bought. Maybe Oliver Sir is serious about
the quality of the tools they make. I infer that he took the company over
from his father

The acme threads were a little rough in the last half of the travel,
but after working the tool over the full range of motion with some nice
anti-galling never-seize paste, it was pretty smooth.

Sounds like the tools I got.

Didn't even need a cheater bar to extract the old bushing.

Sounds like it worked like it's supposed to!

Another note, the manual says that for some cars, the dust shield needs
to be loosened and rotated so that the opening for the caliper allows
access for the tool. On my E300 the dust shield is rusted in place, but
the tool fit fine, so I did all the work of removing the parking brake
shoes and mechanism but in the end didn't need to do that. Not looking
forward to putting that back together.

I'm confused now at what bushing you were replacing. Where exactly is it?

I'll have to look more closely at the rear of our '94 E420 next time I am
crawling around under it to repair the fuel (gasoline) leak. I took
pictures and have a part on order from Rusty. Maybe I'll be able to get
it installed this weekend.

Hmmm ... I wonder how much longer the bushings on our car will last. It

I only had time to do one bushing, which took me about 30 minutes.
We'll see how the other side works out - I'll bet that I can do it
faster than 30 minutes. This tool has a thrust bearing in the pull side
of the tool, and fit/finish were about 9 out of 10. The acme threads

I'm going to have to do all this work again on my wagon; planning to
'make' my own puller for the inner bushing of the LCA aka spring link.

I don't know where they are made. I bought a W123 pre-chamber puller and
an injection pump delivery valve holder loosening tool (the type that has
all the splines). The pre-chamber puller seemed OK, but the delivery valve
tool was almost worthless. Once I had the delivery valve holder out (by
using the holder locks as crows-foot wrenches), I had to grind a lot of
metal off the delivery valve holder and ream out the center of the Sir
Tools tool to make it just fit over the holder. I was NOT pleased. I'm
thinking about getting a rebuilt pump from Rusty and, if I do, the
correct delivery valve tool will be included with the order.

Is Sir Tools made in China? This tool is less than half the cost of
  the factory tool.

 Doesn't appear so: http://www.sirtools.com/

I forgot about that.

The fit and finish of the tools I bought (the prechamber puller and
delivery valve holder driver), however, leave something to be desired,
not to mention that the deliver valve holder driver did not work as
received.

I don't recall having seen before the bottom part of their web page with
Oliver Sir's comment about their one simple rule. Perhaps I should call
him about it.

Re: [MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?

2010-11-13 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Looks like my china-bating line in the original email has un-done my original
intent - get input on the usefulness of this extractor/pressing in tool.

So all the 124 owners and 201 owners on this list are too frugal to spring for
the $100 for this S.T. extractor? Perhaps I can re-sell once I'm done for 50%
of my cost?

I'm realizing that if I had access to a lathe, I could probably copy these
designs and make most of my own tools for far less in material cost than these
prices. Labor cost is another issue - I figure my labor rate is $55 per hour,
so I'd have to make the tool in less than two hours or so. I'll bet a
proficient machinist would only need about 15 to 30 minutes.

I have a spare MB splined socket i'd make you a deal on.

I suspect that those tools are hardened - you'd need a precision grinder
instead of a lathe, or beable to harden mild steel after you turned them on
the lathe.
If you buy ST extractor, I'll buy it after you use it for 50% ---

OK, already ordered it. I'll report on it's usefulness, and then you've got
first dibs once I'm done with both cars. Only condition is if you sell it,
advertise it here first.
