Thanks, Jim. I'll have to take a feel next time I'm under there. I'll keep
everyone posted on how things go.

I've felt the setup on the driver's side fender before (the
one that also contains the two (ice cube) relays, but I've never
checked to

see what else was in there.

Nothing else is in there, that's not it. Look (or feel) forwards of
that. The relay box cover has a latch, the GP relay has a cover that
just pulls off. In size it's a bit like that of the relay box, but
sideways. (Long direction along the fender wall.)

everything's as it should be.
The tires on the car are very worn, so I'll have to address that before we
take it on some flogging runs. The weather is getting much nicer, so it's
time to roll down the windows, open the sunroof, and enjoy the fresh air!

Where are both the relay and the strip fuse on a 1981 300CD?

Ought to be on the driver's-side fender, front and center.
Black, with a snap-off dust cover, can't miss it. I think by
'81 it had moved to there from atop the steering column, where
it used to live with the series plug system. (And the strip
fuse was on the firewall.)

There is an outside chance that
nothing short of a miracle and some hard, hard, hard flogging will do
the
trick. I'm still hoping it's crudded-up rings rather than just simply
worn

out.

Hard driving can make an incredible difference. Witness my 240D
that was (when I got it) faster in first gear than second. Once
the throttle linkage was corrected it was still a slug, but hard
driving has restored it to the peak of horsepower perfection that
is a 240D automatic. (And it's still for sale!)

One thing's for sure, unless your car is running right and has
been for awhile there's no point in a compression test. And of
course if it _is_ running right, why do one at all?

The GP
relays themselves can fail, too. How's its fuse?

Where are both the relay and the strip fuse on a 1981 300CD? Believe it or
not, this is the first diesel I've ever owned when I've had even the thought
of checking GP's. The engine in this thing seems to be worn out (lots of
blow by and hard starting), so I want to see if the glow plug system is
doing all it can to improve starting. There is an outside chance that
nothing short of a miracle and some hard, hard, hard flogging will do the
trick. I'm still hoping it's crudded-up rings rather than just simply worn
out.

Not in theory, but if _all_ the plugs are dead maybe. You need
to get out the meter and start doing some basic checks. The GP
relays themselves can fail, too. How's its fuse?

Kevin,

Sounds to me like a typical 'optimistic' glow plug timer circuit. Wait
another count of ten after the light goes out, and then try cranking.
Yes, it is possible for the light to go one when there are problems.
The self diagnostic circuit compares current to plug #1 to the rest, and
sometimes if only one plug is out it won't be detected.

What other symptoms?

Very respectfully,

Not usually. 5 seconds seems long for a system on the fritz. Usually the
light is the first sign. Why don't you think they work? Did you test them
for resistance? Are they under 1 ohm? (the max you would want, about .6
new)
