Cap'n Eddie the race car driver never had a driver's license, even in
the 60s. Before WWI (the war to end all wars) no DL was needed
Afterward, he was so famous. He said if he got stopped he pulled
out the gold 'Merkun Legion membership card the Legion had given him
and showed it to johnny law. Johnny, on reading the name on the
card, would strike up a conversation with the war hero driver/pilot
and never ask for a real driver's license.

Early one evening in 1976, I had just departed main gate of George AFB, CA,
with my '74 Plymouth van heavily loaded with beams (sticking out the
rear, etc.) I had salvaged from a small bridge on base to take them to
"cabin" in mtns 35 miles away. Almost immediately, CHP stopped me and
asked for "license and registration." Officer glanced at 'em, returned 'em
and waved me on. Next day, as I was returning the registration card to the
glove compartment from on the engine cover, where I had placed it when the
officer returned, I realized I had given him a 2-year-old card for the '64
Dodge van with MI plates I had sold coupla years before. Officer obviously
did look very closely at card nor vehicle.

If you actually drove one for a while, you would see that the 126 is a far

I was wondering the same thing myself. However, since the rebuild was done
in 2010, would the original heads still be available? I can have him look
at it and tell me. He knows about the rod bender issues so I'm assuming
 the newer head was installed.

I would be trading a W220 for a W126, so it would be like going from
present day to the 1980s. Not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.

I suspect that a leak is probably due to lack of use. The car hadn't been
driven much in the recent past to my knowledge.

That may be why the SRS light is on?

Oil leak and other problems may indicate deeper problems, which may be cheap to
fix once diagnosed, or may be a nightmare if the work was done poorly.

This car sounds more like a nice project, less like a Mercedes Martha daily

I think a good SDL with nothing wrong would bring 10K, so it is
probably about even value. (understanding the buyers for a perfect
SDL are limited in number) Probably easier to sell the W220.

Another way to look at it is: AN SDL that good for $6000 is a steal.

Given a choice, I'd take the SDL. NO CONTEST a durable real car
(PKW) vs a plastic electron wagon (PEW)

Without doing a lot of legwork, a quick review would suggest that my
car (2003 S430) is worth around $8k-$10, depending on the market and
venue.

I have roughly $6.5k in the car including my purchase price.

Using that as a basis point the question becomes, would the W126 as
described be worth $6k?

So the engine in this car is not a rod bender, correct? If not,
what was the issue with these? Are these the ones that would crack

The 86-87 SDL is NOT a rodbender. Those came later and were 350SDs,
until in the 140, they went back to calling it a 300SD, because they
had trashed the name of the 350SD.

all were 14 heads, and some made problems early on. Out of 5 OM603s,
i've owned all were 14 heads and were reliable. Herr Doctor
theorized in his latter years that perhaps most of the bad castings
were replaced by then, and the remaining ones were good. I buy into
that theory.

As long as the compression is good, I would not worry about it other
than to keep the coolant tank filled to the right level and check it
regularly. I put something like 250k miles on my first SDL with the
14 head, and the head never made trouble.

Sounds like a nice car and it should have lower maint. costs than a
140. Especially since he has done all that work. May need upper

Former owner of my 94 S420 is still interested in swapping for my
2003 S430 even. If you don't recall, here's what he's done with the
car since he got it in 2010:

The car spent its entire life in Palm Springs minus one year in
Orange County and the last 5 with me. The second owner purchased
at 100,000 miles and made the commute to LA. He overheated the car
and gave it to a mechanic who subsequently made the repairs and
sold to me at 185,XXX. We drove it back to Mobile from California.
Current mileage is 195,000 and below are only the major items that
have been replaced/repaired. Everything works on the car.

 Items that have been replaced:

 AC System
 Climate Control Unit
 Compressor/Dryer/Hoses
Suction Discharge hose (which is not made any longer)
 Replaced ALL vac pods
 Spent: $2,000 A/C shop alone

 Engine
 Rebuilt
 Replaced various metal fuel lines
Replaced as needed plastic clamps on fuel lines
 Purchased rebuilt cruise control amplifier
Odometer gear went out at 190,000 and was replaced immediately.
Wore gear was original.

 Engine mounts
 Replaced various fuel injectors

 Suspension/Brakes
 Idler arm repair kit
Replaced steering gear box with used unit
 New Michelins at 187,582
 Both tie rods
 Replaced pads, rotors, calipers
 Wheel speed sensors
 Sway bars/links
 Rear sub frame bushings

 Transmission
Replaced with a rebuilt unit from Silver Star Transmission
 Replaced both flex discs
 Transmission mount

 Body
 Complete repaint $3500
 No rust or rot

 Interior
 Interior swap from 1991 420sel
 Upgraded to leather wheel
 Replaced dash
 New floor mats
 New stereo/speakers

 Needs attention:
SRS light on (clock springs have been replaced), still need to diagnose
 Antilock light intermittent
Both rear speaker grills are cracked. Need repair/paint
Front door speaker grills need repaint
Small oil drip- have not investigated
Driver seat has tear on left side of seat bottom and mesh in
center of bottom has come apart at the seams in two spots.

Either one or both of the headlamp washers are inoperable

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-29 Thread Allan Streib
My 300D has a slight vibration at highway speeds. It's sort of a rumble
that occurs at intervals of a second or two... not a a constant
virbation, and not violent at all. Barely perceptible. Hard to tell
where it's coming from. It's always been there. I recently replaced
both flex disks, the center bearing, and carrier, and a little before
that replaced the motor and trans mounts. Replacing the center carrier
removed some vibration at low speeds but the low frequency vibration is
still there at high speeds, perhaps *slightly* reduced.

I was careful to mark the driveshaft halves and put them back together
in the same alignment, but can't be certain that someone did not get
them offset in the ~20 years time prior to my owning the car.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-29 Thread Dieselhead
The idea of swapping the shaft is a good one. Especially if you can
use a known smooth running driveshaft, complete with carrier bearing
and rubber. Here is why: This just occurred to me as I read your
post. ON the belt idler, the bearing is in the same place all the
time, moving maybe + - one degree or so. What happens there is that
the bearing wears into "grooves" if viewed parallel to the centerline
of the bearing.

The U-joint in the driveshaft is the same thing. It is possible that
the ujoint seems tight, but is worn into grooves. The relative
weakness of the new rubber center "carrier bearing holder" may be ok
with a perfect shaft, but not stiff enough for the imperceptibly worn
u-joint, with grooves worn into it.

I never got the vibration resolved. I drove it with the vibration for
years. On my car, it started after some yahoos took out the
driveshaft without my permission to start the work.

I have a feeling this is the area I should concentrate; ensure the shaft is
perfectly level, which if not, would certainly cause just such a vibration.
Will pursue this angle further. Thanks.

On Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 11:06 PM, Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> wrote:

I chased this on my first SDL also. One thing that helped: after I changed
the carrier and the rubber mount again, I noticed the new rubber mount for
the carrier is not as thick or stiff as the older ones. THis allowed the
carrier bearing to sag at rest, and to float around while running. A
definite source of vibration. I cleaned the rubber good with brake cleaner,
then took blue permatex and built up the mount below the bearing, with the
driveshaft wired in as near centered as I could make it. This helped.

I have suspected that the new carrier bearing mount is not stiff enough to
do the job, but never could prove it, since I don't have an old rubber mount
 to compare to.

As Jim said, if any fool takes the driveshaft apart, there are 20 some
wrong ways to put it back together, and only one right way. Even when you
try to mark the halves, it is hard to get them aligned right.

This sort of vibration can be tires, wheel bearings, diff mounts (you

replaced that) subframe mounts, or a bad half shaft. Check the axles for
rotational play (that is, click-click while rotating back and forth.

You should also check for excessive wear in the spider pinion -- there
should be very little "backlash" while turning a rear wheel
before the other

one moves, along with the pinion (driveshaft). If one wheel can be move a
significant amount independent of the others, the diff is worn out. Will
clank sometimes, and can vibrate. My 220D was shot, and I think the "new"
300D is going to get a transplant soon, as it's bad as well.

Weak shocks can permit wheel tramp a resonant speeds, so check those, and
make sure the sway bar bushings in the rear and the links are all
good, they

allow the sway bar to vibrate if they are bad.

 Good luck!

 Peter

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-29 Thread Ralph Robertson
I have a feeling this is the area I should concentrate; ensure the shaft is
perfectly level, which if not, would certainly cause just such a vibration.
Will pursue this angle further. Thanks.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-28 Thread Dieselhead
I chased this on my first SDL also. One thing that helped: after I
changed the carrier and the rubber mount again, I noticed the new
rubber mount for the carrier is not as thick or stiff as the older
ones. THis allowed the carrier bearing to sag at rest, and to float
around while running. A definite source of vibration. I cleaned the
rubber good with brake cleaner, then took blue permatex and built up
the mount below the bearing, with the driveshaft wired in as near
centered as I could make it. This helped.

I have suspected that the new carrier bearing mount is not stiff
enough to do the job, but never could prove it, since I don't have an
old rubber mount to compare to.

As Jim said, if any fool takes the driveshaft apart, there are 20
some wrong ways to put it back together, and only one right way.
Even when you try to mark the halves, it is hard to get them aligned
right.

This sort of vibration can be tires, wheel bearings, diff mounts
(you replaced that) subframe mounts, or a bad half shaft. Check the
axles for rotational play (that is, click-click while rotating back
and forth.

You should also check for excessive wear in the spider pinion --
there should be very little "backlash" while turning a rear wheel
before the other one moves, along with the pinion (driveshaft). If
one wheel can be move a significant amount independent of the
others, the diff is worn out. Will clank sometimes, and can
vibrate. My 220D was shot, and I think the "new" 300D is going to
get a transplant soon, as it's bad as well.

Weak shocks can permit wheel tramp a resonant speeds, so check
those, and make sure the sway bar bushings in the rear and the links
are all good, they allow the sway bar to vibrate if they are bad.

Good luck!

Peter

This sounds very similar to the vibration I had in the '87 300SDL that I
traded to Kaleb a while back -- I didnt' do all that you did, but I never
could figure out what it was. My Indie at the time (may he rest in peace)
put it up on the rack, had his wife run it up through the vibration range
(65 MPH, IIRC), and couldn't find the source, though he could reproduce it.

Also, rubber mount for carrier bearing? I see the bearing was replaced, but no

2011-03-28 Thread Ralph Robertson
An update to my long story: I have a vibration at certain speeds in my '87
300SDL. The vehicle is in super condition, with about 130K miles. This is
what I have done thus far:
replace transmission output shaft bearing and seal.
replace drive shaft center carrier bearing.
replace both front and rear drive shaft flex discs.
replace differential mount.
remove and switch rear axles from left to right.
Had motor mounts and trans. mounts checked, but not replaced. Apparently
they are all still good.
Had the drive shaft removed, checked out and balanced at a specialty shop in
Atlanta, Ga. It was out of balance slightly, and they added a weight to
correct this.
The vibration still is noticeable when under acceleration at about 25-30
MPH, then smooths out. At about 45-50 it returns until about 58 MPH, then
again smooths out and is not noticeable. At about 70-75mph, I can feel it
again returning slightly. After having all the above done, the vibration is
somewhat reduced and I assume the new rubbers are dampening the issue.
The strange thing is the weather seems to have an effect. When the temp. is
around 55F., I can feel this issue, but if it is above say 70 degrees F, it
is practically unnoticeable, except for the higher speed vibration.
Except for replacing all the mounts, I am at a standstill! Any ideas?

I first replaced all the rubber mountings on the vehicle, but the vibration
was still there. Now hoping the balancing of the shaft will do the trick.
Thanks for all input.

Did you check with Anthonys on Route 50? He's semi-retired last I heard

My father is selling his 1987 300 SDL. I was going to put it on Ebay but
not sure what to start it at. Does anyone have suggestions at what I should
start it at? The engine seems good with 200,000 miles on it, but it has
tranny issues in low gears. (any suggestions)slight rust and some paint fade.
Typical south New York stuff. (Car is located in zip 11422) Thanks everyone,
and have a great day.

[MBZ] 1987 300SDL For Sale

2008-01-22 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
All who inquired, here are the details. Asking $4,000. Average NADA retail
$5,250.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300SDL
VIN: WDBCB25D8HA329743
Mileage: 269,853
Paint Code: 623 [Light Ivory]
Interior Code: 273 [Leather Brazil Brown]

I bought the car as a second owner in March of 2003 with 180,126 miles. The
original owner purchased the car in New Bern, NC and the car has been in
North Carolina ever since.

Aesthetically, the car is in great shape. Being a 'North Carolina native'
the car has no rust whatsoever. The paint is original and in great shape for
its age. The interior is in overall great shape, with the only exception
being the cracks in the leather on the bottom front seat cushions. The dash
has no cracks in it whatsoever; likewise for the Zebrano wood trim, all of
which is in great condition for its age.

Unfortunately in February of 2005, the car was involved in a low speed,
parking lot accident. The only damaged parts were the passenger side
headlight, front bumper, and front passenger side fender. There was
absolutely NO damage to the hood, unibody, suspension or anything inside the
engine compartment. The car was fixed immediately following the accident
with OEM and NOS parts only. This was also my 'golden opportunity' to
retrofit the car with original Bosch European headlights (with working city
lights).

As far as maintenance is concerned, only Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 has
been used. The coolant, air filter, transmission filter, main fuel filter,
inline fuel filter, brake fluid, power steering fluid, power steering filter
have all been changed at regular intervals using German products and
lubricants when available. This includes exclusive use of Mercedes, Knecht,
Mann and Heingst products.

Regarding the mechanical qualities of the car, the car has an overall tight,
solid feel; rare in a W126 with such mileage. The engine is a strong 603
motor with no problems at all. No need to worry about the infamous OM603.961
cylinder head problem; the cylinder head was replaced with a newer stamped
version purchased from Potomac German Auto. Of course, the trap oxidizer was
long gone before I purchased the car. The engine and IP are leak-free thanks
to new seals. The transmission is in great shape, shifts flawlessly and is
leak-free. The suspension makes for a great ride, as a majority of its
components were replaced before I bought the car.

Everything inside and out of the car is functioning properly. The following
items were recently replaced:

-New thermostat
-New coolant reservoir cap
-6 new glow plugs
-New IP seals
-New ABS wheel sensors (right and left)
-New Michelin MXV-4 tires all around

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me off list and I will
be happy to answer them. I will try to provide pictures as soon as possible.

If you also have an account at BofA, you can just use
a transfer slip. I've bought/sold several cars that way.

2007-12-29 Thread LarryT
Call BoA and make sure the CC is valid - not counterfeit and bought for
the face amount. They will have a record of it and should be able to tell
you pretty quickly. If they give you any trouble tell them if the CC
bounces you will tell TV/News/everyone how BoA refused to tell you if one of
their products was legit and that you were screwed out of $X directly
because of BoA's inaction and lack of customer service.. That usually gets
their attention.

Good luck -

2007-12-29 Thread Dave H...
I emailed him back asking why he could not just pay in cash. His response:
"I need some kind of receipt." My response: "Better come with either cash
or during banking hours when WE can go to the bank and get the cash."

This past summer I really got S'd when I explicitly asked for cash or a
certified check, accepted the check and then found out it was a Credit Card
Check. It took 30 days for that credit card check to clear. Don't make
that mistake folks!

Normally I'd say take it to the local BoA branch and exchange it for cash,
but stories like I linked above give me pause. How much does he owe? More

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL; No good deed ever goes unpunished

2007-12-29 Thread Robert Bigham
And how!

Years ago I went on a road trip to rescue of a young
relative who owned a VW bug: Valve clearances had
closed up and the thing overheated and stopped on the
road about 100 miles from here and 80 miles from
her home.

I drove the 100 miles, loosened up the valves, and BTW
gave her a used tire that I had ratholed, because she
had no spare. She'd ruined a tire on the way. Told her I
didn't know if it was good or not, but since it held air it
was a lot better than no spare.

She drove on home and the bug ran OK. I drove 100
miles back, and thougt how I had done something good
for once.

Months later she let me know the free tire had come
apart after short use. Seemed to think I had made her
a victim by giving her a tire that proved to be a POS.

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

Mark Twain said that if you take a stray dog, feed
it and make it prosperous, it will not bite you, and that
is the principal difference between dogs and humans.

But I do not learn from all my mistakes, and continue
to try to help people out when I can. DUH! Robert

Bill,

I very much like your idea.

Group,

Supposedly the owner of the 300SDL, in conversation, will be by with a new
serpentine belt and replace it today.

Also supposedly, the "boy" will be here on January third to pay off and take
delivery of this vehicles We shall see! The "boy" seems to be avoiding my
demand that the final payment, to avoid repossession, has to be in cash.

Alex,

As I understand the history of this vehicle it was born and raised in
Germany. It does have both the European front and rear bumpers, but
 the
American headlights.

It has the cloth interior and is a standard.

It came to America with its original purchaser in 1998/99 and I bought
 it
in 03/04.

I know many people have had bad experiences financing cars - especially for
family members. One time was an exception - was selling my 25' wooden
sailboat - 1st guy came by with his wife, wanted it but could only pay 1/2
then ($1500) and wanted a month to pay the rest - another $1500. Within 2
weeks he;d paid me off. But he was a stranger - perhaps a relative would
have been different?

Oh YES most definitely, I retained a fully operational master key with an
added clause that if the lock/key should need to be changed that I must be
provided with a full functional copy to enable repossession of the vehicle
if that should be necessary.

Hi Tom,
You've probably seen the shop sign that says (something like this)

Standard Labor Rate - $25/hr
Labor rate if you watch - $50/hr
Labor rate if you help - $100/hr

There's more but I'll have to find my Joke file first --

Larry,

I am learning - SLOW but learning. :)

Two nights ago sold a 68 280SE to a local person. This time a full contract

was signed and witnessed.

Loan at 12% interest, three calendar days late a $50.00 penalty, non payment

for thirty days automatic repossession. I have a lien on the title and he
must provide proof of insurance with me as the lien holder being the primary

beneficiary.

This guy is a local Ph.D. level college professor but I am not taking any
more chances.

Learning but SLOW:)

If I were to ever "finance" a vehicle for somebody, they would be paying a
little extra AND the car would not leave until they had it paid off. Even
then you can be on shakey ground.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL

2007-12-28 Thread Tom Hargrave
Helping a friend and being taken advantage of are two different things.

I'll be more than happy to help someone find a car or to look at a car
that someone is considering.

I've had family members ask me to finance cars and I've always said
"no". The last one was my youngest Brother who wanted to buy a car from
me and make payments. I TOLD him to borrow the money from a bank and he
told me that he could not because he would not be able to pay back the
loan. Then I asked how he expected to pay me back?

Thanks, Tom

Sad, isn't it. It's not worth the risk to help a friend. Doesn't
bode well for the country's future, does it?

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL

2007-12-28 Thread Dave H...
Alex,

As I understand the history of this vehicle it was born and raised in
Germany. It does have both the European front and rear bumpers, but the
American headlights.

It has the cloth interior and is a standard.

It came to America with its original purchaser in 1998/99 and I bought it
in 03/04.

He already made up his mind. He wants his money back.
I assume that isn't an option for him?

Mitch.

So is it a gray market car, or a conversion somebody did? 123s didn't come
with sticks except for the 240D, right guys?

If it's gray-market, does it have manual climate controls?
