[MBZ] 1997 SEL 420
Any thoughts or warnings on 1997 SEL 420? 140,000 miles, no rust I can see on cursory inspection. Paint is okay, interior pretty good, blue. $2700.00 Runs good. Is that a fair price Thanks Mike Michael E. Do you mean a 87 420sel or a 97 s420? 2 very different vehicles Sent from my iPhone On Jul 18, 2014, at 8:27 AM, Michael Esh via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Any thoughts or warnings on 1997 SEL 420? 140,000 miles, no rust I can see on cursory inspection. Re: [MBZ] 1997 SEL 420
Gotta be an S420 if it's a 97. There was a 400SEL, however. That's a bit cheap for a 97 with those kinds of miles. I would expect issues or cosmetic problems at that price. The W140 chassis is far better from 1997-on, so as far as the year is concerned it's a good one. I am currently looking for a 300SEL or S320 in a W140 chassis. If anyone hears of a deal like this for one I would appreciate letting me know. Re: [MBZ] 1997 SEL 420
It would be fun to compare the MSRP with the current blue book prices for MBs from the mid to late 90s. IIRC the MSRP on a 199x 400E was $70,000 or thereabouts. Depreciation is spectacular, but not in a good way for original owners On Fri, Jul 18, 2014 at 1:11 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Gotta be an S420 if it's a 97. Or for subsequent owners. Friends had an '02 E430 4Matic. Beautiful car - silver with a dark blue interior. They bought it used for more than $50K and I think, only got something like $15K out of it when they sold it a few years later. Not sure of exact dates but know it was not new when they got it and they have been out of it for a while. Depreciation is spectacular, but not in a good way for original owners I've heard that many states charge plate fees based on market value. Michigan bases it on MSRP, and depreciates it for three years. If you fail to support Michigan's auto industry by buying a car at least every three years, well, you don't deserve to get any tax break for driving a cheaper older car. The silliness hits drivers of old MBZ the hardest. It's over $130 a year to plate a $34k 2.3-16v, and over $230 a year to plate a $55k S210 4matic. Indiana does or did the excise tax thing, too, and it was spread over something like 12 years. At 12 years the excise tax dropped down to something like $25. Here in FL it's a flat fee, thank goodness.
