to try to dismount the mirror, and was likely the same price.)  I

I have only used car-part.com once but I had very good luck.
I wanted the right side mirror for my W115 300D and got one for a 
reasonable price shipped to me from a yard in Georgia if my memory 
serves to be correct.

It came carefully packaged and was in perfect condition.

I came to the conclusion that these yards are mostly dealing with shops and/or 
walk-ins and they don't see it as worth their time to respond to an 
individual/DIY inquiry from the internet. I kind of get that, but it's 
frustrating when you're seriously looking for a part.

I wonder if they respond to requests from Joe's Body Shop but not from 
peons?
Anybody I've called, including a ramshackle place that looked like I'd 
stepped 50 years into the past, has looked at the computer and said 
'yep, it's pulled, or yep, it's still on the car'. OTOH, when I found a 
truck grille about five miles away and gave my neighbor their phone 
number, they didn't have the part they listed on car-part, and they 
ordered him the wrong new one for too much money when he went there to 
pick up the used one.

I put requests in at 7 different salvage yards that listed an E320 wagon rear 
bumper between 20 and 150 miles away. none of them responded after a week. I 
called the three closest to me, two didn’t know if they had one and weren’t 
willing to check, the other simply said they didn’t know and I could come by 
and look.

What’s the point???

I did OK with chat at Airport Auto in Jackson Michigan, and never had 
problems getting someone to talk to me by calling the phone numbers 
associated with the listings.
Did occasionally have trouble with the end result, like a place in 
Oregon selling me a left knee airbag for a price more appropriate for a 
right knee airbag (score!), and then shipping me a right bag I didn't 
need or want. Oh, sorry about that. Keep the right bag and we'll send 
you a left bag the next time we get one in. (never heard back from them, 
surprise)

Agreed.

I tried (unsuccessfully) to find a replacement rear bumper for my 1998 S210 
wagon this way and could never get a response. The ones I called rarely knew 
what they had, and even then would often just tell me to “come by and we’ll 
look for one” which I wasn’t about to do when they were 100 miles away.

specific parts but not entire cars. Frustrating. I would love to find one that 
has been smashed in the side or rear and go pull all the front parts I need but 
not easy to find any cars.  I guess I could call around but that’s terribly 
inefficient.

Annoying. If anyone knows of any yards around them that might have a good donor 
car let me know. I’ll keep looking on FB and CL too for someone parting one 
out. If anyone sees one…

So I’m starting to look for pahtz for this 221. The 2 big yards near here have 
online searchable car inventory. LKQ is one, they have other yards in the 
larger area. But actually finding other yards that have these cars (and LKQ 
don’t appear to) is nigh impossible. There are searches from other yards for 
specific parts but not entire cars. Frustrating. I would love to find one that
