A friend is considering purchasing a 1984 500 SEC. The car runs and drives
well. The a/c isn't working. I only have diesel experience so I can't offer
advice about this car. The car has 170k miles on the clock.

Are there any expensive repair issues on these cars? Any feedback would be
appreciated.

Nothing really special, I don't think. May have SLS in the rear, check
for leaking struts, those cost the earth. Prone to rusted out rear
control arms ($900 or so), can't tell till they bust and the shock
bangs around.

Front end is typical W126, no more or less problems than usual.

Check the timing chain, it may be due for one. Not a problem like the
420 or 380, but you don't want to have to do a valve job any sooner
than 250,000.

Excessive oil consumption and blue smoke on startup is usually just bad
valve stem seals, not expensive.

AC could be just a blow seal on the compressor manifold, could be a
dead compressor (read expensive there), you will have to investigate.
May also be just a bad compressor seal or a dead KLIMA relay.

Look for rust on the lower corners of the rear window, this is a know
trouble spot. Not horribly expensive to repair, but must be done or
the trunk fills with water, etc.

Engine is bulletproof unless you seriously overheat it or never change
the oil. Not a problem to work on as it will have the inserts for the
head bolts already. May need valves/cams at around 250,000 miles if
run on dino oil, probably nothing if run on Mobil 1.

Hi Terry,
Mercedes, alas, never made such a car, though it is possible someone has
taken it upon themselves to rectify MB's oversight with this one. More
likely that someone stuck a 500SEC badge on a 280SLC. In fact, from the
factory there were no manual SECs or 500s at all. What is the VIN of
this car? A gray 500SEC should be WDB12604412xx.

Re: [MBZ] 500 SEL/SEC

I think the last SLCs were built in '81 - replaced by the 380SEC in
'82 - at least for the US market. The 500SEC was sold here in '84 and
'85, then the 560SEC from '86 to '91.

Personally I prefer the latter 560 and 420 engines after they changed the
injection system.

The biggest problem I have found with the 117 engines is the mechanics. The
engines are great going well over 300k miles with no oil consumption.
However a jack leg mechanic can very mess one up in a heart beat. My 420 had
all kinds of valve train problems mainly because a mechanic stripped out the
cam tower bolts, then heil-coiled them but left shavings in the holes. Thus
when torqued the cam towers did not seat.

The main problems with the engines is the fuel injection system. They do not
like to sit for long periods. If they do they will gum up and not run right.
Other than that you change oil and timing chains.

Only the six-banger 126 was available with a stick and all the SECs had

lower hoodline of the SEC.

Re: [MBZ] 500 SEL/SEC

I found that all of the rubber air control and intake manifold hoses
(and there are a LOT of them) were hard to the point of not sealing on
the '78 450 engine - replacing all of them ($$) made a major
difference in how the engine runs (as it wouldn't even start before).
I agree with Trampas that the 560 is the V-8 engine to have. More
power and better mileage.
