[MBZ] 87 300SDL windshield replacement
I'll make sure and bring it to their attention when I finalize on the installer Roger We put a PPG windshield in our 1987 300SDL when we had it and it worked out okay. Have the installer be careful of the two rivets on the top corners of the roof that hold the molding down. I think they're aluminum and oxidize. When they remove the molding the rivet that holds the molding clip on snaps. I have a cracked windshield in my 87 SDL, called the local auto glass place to get price on replacement. $505 for windshield from Mercedes $377.20 for six pieces of molding $100-$120 for install. Do I need the Mercedes glass or should I go with a PPG glass, and is it necessary for new molding? I have $100 deductible on my insurance but you can bet I'll pay for it in the long run if I go all original Benz stuff. Roger _ Who's that on the Red Carpet? Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL windshield replacement
Roger - Make sure you check your state regulations on glass replacement. My son had the front and rear glass replaced on my 300SD just before I bought it from him [crack in the rear, 23 years of normal wear in the front]. Free, and SC regulations would not even allow the insurance company to note it in his policy. Many / most? places require insurance to cover such things. They should cut the rubber to remove the old glass. By doing this, all the metal trim can be reused. What you SHOULD buy, that i did not see listed, is a new rubber gasket. You shouldnt have to pay more than about $250 to have the windshield replaced, labor and all. I wouldnt see why you would need any new moulding. You do not have to buy the MB glass. My '83 300SD has a leak at the upper right corner of the windshield. I anticipate needing a new gasket there as well as the rear glass since water also leaks into the trunk. Does anything need to be done with the aerodynamic trim on each side of the windshield? I want to have this removed and painted since it's full of rock chips. Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL windshield replacement
The drip rail trim is swaged (pressed) on to a weldment that comes out of the body. You can take it off, but I guarantee you, you'll never get it back on the way it went, or to even stay on permanently. On top of that, if you don't have the driver tool to drive it back on, or can't fabricate one, forget it. Not to mention that even with the tool it's a tricky job and seriously endangers the car finish if you're not careful. DO NOT buy anything buy OEM (MB) window seals. Without going into a lengthy dissertation, non-OEM seals are often poorly made, however, it's an attribute that won't manifest itself for several years. Consider the cost amortized over the life of the car and it's easy to take. Dan --- Kevin Kraly [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My '83 300SD has a leak at the upper right corner of the windshield. I got a new windshield in my 300SDL last summer at the local Binswanger shop for a total of $200.00 - including tax. It has not leaked in the torrential rains we've been getting - even at highway speeds yesterday. They were able to replace the molding such that I can't tell they touched it. I think this windshield is glued in instead of using a gasket? Glass - $98.52 4.8 labor - $72.00 2- Urethane kits - $20.00 tax - $9.48 total $200.00 On 6/21/07, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Roger Conlon wrote: I have a cracked windshield in my 87 SDL, called the local auto glass place to get price on replacement. $505 for windshield from Mercedes $377.20 for six pieces of molding $100-$120 for install.
