Re: [MBZ] 93 S-Class diesel (new engine?)

2005-12-26 Thread Dave M.
Yes. The last revision of the OM603 head, casting #22, has a modified
oil passage. The previous castings were mostly open to the head
gasket, and sometimes the gasket would blow out into the timing chain
cavity and #1 cylinder. The new casting moves the passage internal to
the head with a hole at either end. In retrospect, I don't understand
why it wasn't designed like that in the first place. A photo of the
heads side by side, showing the oil passage difference, is here:

I forgot something in my previous post. The engine used from 1992-95
in the W140 is the 603.971. The differences are relatively minor, but
the power ratings and redline are not the same. I have NO idea why
that is. The mehcanical internals are, AFAIK, identical.

You could both visually inspect the cyls for signs of unusual wear
patterns, and measure piston protrusion to ensure the stroke length is
the same for each.

Have you seen a 3.5 with head problems? I posted yesterday about one I
looked at that was supposedly diagnosed with a bad head gasket. Gets
hot, builds up lots of pressure, has lots of oil leaking into the
coolant. In fact, there was alot of oil in the area around the coolant
tank I guess where it has spilled over. Car has 330K miles and
supposedly only uses a qt every 3k miles. Ran pretty darn good. If I
am able to get it cheap I will fix it. Is there any way of telling if
the rods are bent with the head off?

THERE IS NO HEAD PROBLEM with OM603.97 engines (the heads were GREAT),

ALL OM603.97 engines have problems. They were the ONLY engines in
Mercedes S class diesels imported to th US in the '90s ('90-'95). It
doesn't matter whether the desgination was 300 or 350, ALL US delivered
"S" class diesls had 3.5 liter OM603.97 engines in the '90s. All te
original engines had the same problem with connecting rods. The rebuilds
that Mecedes supplied did NOT have the problem.

In the early 90's everything was badged in hundreds for some reason.
the early 90's 300E still had a 3.0 engine but in 93 it was still the
300E but had the 3.2 engine. The 300CE really had a 3.2. In the 140's,
300SE was 3.2 engine, 300SD 3.5 engine, 400SE and 400SEL was 4.2, the
500SEL was really a 5.0. Then in 94 they changed the whole sytem so it
was S320, S350, S420, S500 etc

To render it excruciatingly clear, for whatever reason the early
W140 300SD used a 3.5l motor, contrary to most of their badging
practices, and contrary to cars that used that very motor both before
and after. OTOH, anybody _ever_ seen a 190E/D with a 1.9l motor?
The correlation between number and engine displacement is only
approximate, but the only out-and-out lies I can think of (leaving
out auxiliary badging such as 6.3, 6.9, etc.) are the early 350 SL,
that 300SD, and the W201 190.

Re: [MBZ] 93 S-Class diesel (new engine?)

2005-12-24 Thread Desert Rat
All MB S class diesels from 1991 (W126) and all W140's had the rod
bender engine even if the badge says 300SD. This applies to North
America only.

Re: [MBZ] 93 S-Class diesel (new engine?)

2005-12-24 Thread dave walton
I was a bit confused by that. My understanding is that the 300's (3.0
litre) are okay while the 350's (3.5 litre) are problematic. This car
is listed as a 300-Series, but is described as having the 3.5 liter
engine. I am still not clear on the issue.

Did the 93 300SD have a 3.5 litre engine that is not a rodbender?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] 93 S-Class diesel (new engine?)

2005-12-24 Thread Jim Cathey

Well I try to not cuss on this list too much but this car is a piece of
shit, it has had a salvage title:

This doesn't necessarily mean too much, given how sloppy States
can be with their paperwork at times. This vehicle _is_ a bit
POS-ey, though, just from looking at it. It could easily have
gotten a besmirched title just by the process it went through when
getting a new engine.

Anybody else think the Carfax reports are particularly difficult
to read? Almost like ex-Microsoft Cobol heads designed it.

well here is the answer from the seller:

Item: Mercedes-Benz : 300-Series (4599601326)
This message was sent while the listing was active.
addisonautogroupinc is the seller.
Looks like it was hit in the front, long time ago,no recent repair, also
you have the small existing damage showed in the pictures

BTW - I agree, this looks like a beater. And I don't trust the
seller's feedback. And I don't like private bidding. And I'd want some
kind of verification of the 'recent' engine. If it does have a factory
crate motor in there, it's almost worth it as a parts car, if the
reserve is low enough. Hmmm.

2005-12-24 Thread Dave M.
I noticed it has a 'MPG' gauge. I thought only gas models had this -
those are simply vacuum gauges. What in the world would drive a MPG
gauge on a diesel? Boost pressure or something? Bizarre!

Hmmm.

Might be interesting to see if a dealer service writer would
check the history of that VIN & look for an engine replacement.

That car looks used, abused, and beat to shit. Those W140's are
expensive enough to maintain if you start with a good one. Ask me how
I know...
Plus, the seller has a history of "buyer beware" behavior documented
in his feedback. There is s much to go wrong with this model you
could spend a couple grand on little PITA repairs. Not to mention the
rodbender engine, problematic head, and self-destructing head gasket.

Anyway, I thought the S350's were only imported here in 94 and 95?
And why is the sunroof open with snow on the ground?
