You got it Wilton. Sad times when stating fact is thought of as a racial
slur because some sissy failed to leave his/her feelings under the pillow

Re: [MBZ] Bad Drivers

2013-09-10 Thread Rich Thomas
I worked with a guy named Billy Goon who was Chinese. One day we were
talking and he says he plays poker with a bunch of other chinamen. At
that time, that term was derogatory from what I understood, so I say
whoa you can't be saying that. He asks what I mean, I say you can't say
"chinamen" as that is derogatory. He looks at me like I have 3 heads
and asks why. So I explain best I could that some people decided that
was bad. He is completely perplexed, and says, well I am from China, I
am a man, so I am a chinaman just like you would be an americaman in China.

On an amusing side note in that regard, my buddy used to work for the
computer company Wang way back when. He was in a meeting with Mr. Wang
and a bunch of other people, being presented to by some advertising firm
who was pitching their services. They unveil a big rendering of a
full-page newspaper ad that says in big letters WANG The Chink in IBM's
Armor along with whatever graphics and copy. He says the whole room
goes quiet, the guy is standing there like what did I just do, then it
dawns on him... Mr. Wang says very quietly, "Thank you, I think we have
heard enough" and gets up and walks out. True story.

The eminent authority on language and social interactions Ms. Rachel
Jeantel explained it quite well. Chinos!

Re: [MBZ] Bad Drivers

Yes, that is what he means, using the Eurocentric designation (orient >
rising > sun > east, that sort of thing, coming from the Age of
Exploration and Empires and all that, along with a command of the Latin
language and the associated etymology).

But he is correct. A good friend of mine married a Chinese girl, very
intelligent (she is an economics professor now, Hahvahd, MIT degrees),
who grew up in New York City, no car. She learned to drive at like 22
or so, having had no need of a car up til then or any particular
experience with them other than the occasional taxi, and really hated
driving but had to in Houston to get anywhere (she did not want to ride
the Ghetro).

One day we got talking about that subject for some reason, she was all
like OMG the Chinese are the worst drivers, me included! We determined,
based on her ability to do extremely sophisticated econometric analysis,
etc. that the reason for it was they don't grow up in a
car/driving/riding culture (realizing that most are first or second
generation) and so do not develop the awareness of subtle clues that are
all around us and contribute to our ability to drive to varying degrees
of wellness. Also recognizing many people have their heads up their
posteriors, providing a similar result, oriental, chinee, or whatever.
Kinda like being dropped into any culture or situation without that sort
of conditioning, you will look like a fool, or worse. Her parents were
off the boat, never drove a car. She was a city girl, never drove a
car, so cars were like some magical thing to them, more or less.

So to some extent it is a cultural attribute that is on display for all
to observe. How one gauges that observation is subject to one's own
subjective observations. Clay is also likely somewhat
racisss but that does not really affect the quality of his
subjective anecdotal observations in regards to the driving aspect.

Also note that in China the chance of dying in a car crash is something
like 10% for all drivers. That is, uh, high.

my daughter informed me with great delight that her bad teacher ended a
dispute between 2 students by screaming "niggers ain't bad in band" at
them. while i personally find this incredibly charming and have great
respect for his taking command of the situation, i cannot help but lament
the double standard by which he can say this all day every day yet if i
white teacher so much as hinted at thinking such a though, he'd never work
again. it's like a kind of terrorism, really

btw, the marching band constantly chants:

ice cold cool aid
fried chicken
fish n grits
that keep me tight!

again, can you imagine what would happen to a white teacher who taught this
to the band and had them chant it often at every game?

I guess I could have described the driver differently.
I might have used oriental or ??? but I was trying to be somewhat
conservative and not appear to be too red necked.

The fellow may have been Korean, Phillipino, etc.
Hard to tell since I am A) not an expert on that sort of thing, and B)
did not really get close enough to determine much more

I blew my horn and waved my fist at him when I pulled up behind him at

What happened to the terms for different races that I learned about many
years ago in high school or college - Caucasian, Negroid, Mongoloid, etc.?
Isn't it merely a statement of fact, not meant as anything denigrating?

So I was talking to my (then much younger and very PC) daughter and
committed the unpardonable sin of saying that I bought some groceries at
the

"Oriental Grocery"...the actual name of the store. She demanded to know
then how I would like being called an occidental. I honestly (missing
the

point entirely) told her I didn't give a crap.

But seriously...if you want to describe an oriental (someone from the
east,
who is racially of a group consisting of Japanese, Korean, Chinese,
Burmese

etc.) and you use the term "asian" doesn't that term also include people
from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc; who are racially and
culturally very different? When I read an account in the British news
about

some asian men being arrested for terrorist activities I can never figure
out WTF they are talking about!

SO is the PC version intended to blur those differences so as to make a
statement that those differences are meaningless in the same way that the
term "partner" can mean married people, people in a homosexual
relationship

or people working closely together in a business arrangement?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: [MBZ] Bad Drivers

2013-09-10 Thread Dan Penoff
A parent of one of my son's friends is from Dutch Guiana. She refers to people
by the color of their skin.

When I asked her about this, she said it was a common way in her previous
culture to identify people, as in "a black man" or "a yellow woman". She
emphasized that it was never done in a disparaging manner, it was just a way to
identify a characteristic.

She found it strange that our culture could potentially find it inappropriate.

I told her it was more a matter of societal norms and nothing else...

Two points.

The north koreans are now purchasing Porsche, having moved on from BMW.

the school #2 boys attends just let us know they are in lock down. Seems some
men in a dark sedan decided to open fire on an unarmed fellow. He was
transported to hospital in critical condition. There were a pair of other
elementary schools that are in lock down.

I checked the local news app and was very surprised to find the suspects were
noted as being african americans. They never reveal the race of criminals
around Seattle. We are supposed to assume all the criminals are of a generic
background, so you can not know what perps are doing what sort of illegal
things by race.

The latins are less afraid of their shadows and more honest with identifying
characteristics. IT does speed things along when you can say it was a chinese
or a turk indicating a store owner, as they tended to focus according to
ethnicity what sort of retail business it was. Like being able to pair a
person from Pakistan to 7-11.

Sorry Wilton, you can only self identify, no longer is race able to be
designated. You have to be latino or african american. You can be white is
you really need to be. Maybe asian american, but they are not happy about that
given the density of that population here, prefer to be identified by
nationality. They seem not to like each others ethnicity.

2013-09-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino
So I was talking to my (then much younger and very PC) daughter and
committed the unpardonable sin of saying that I bought some groceries at the
"Oriental Grocery"...the actual name of the store. She demanded to know
then how I would like being called an occidental. I honestly (missing the
point entirely) told her I didn't give a crap.

But seriously...if you want to describe an oriental (someone from the east,
who is racially of a group consisting of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Burmese
etc.) and you use the term "asian" doesn't that term also include people
from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc; who are racially and
culturally very different? When I read an account in the British news about
some asian men being arrested for terrorist activities I can never figure
out WTF they are talking about!

SO is the PC version intended to blur those differences so as to make a
statement that those differences are meaningless in the same way that the
term "partner" can mean married people, people in a homosexual relationship
or people working closely together in a business arrangement?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: [MBZ] Bad Drivers

2013-09-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino
<<...perhaps a legacy of racial bias, slavery etc.>>

It is a common misconception that the US is unique or even preeminent in
having a history of slavery. Most of the African slave trade went east, not
west. Even the western slave trade went more to countries south of the US.
Slavery exists today in many parts of the world.

Some of my close relatives are named Loschiavo, which translates from the
Italian as "the slave". The village in Italy where my dad (and the
Loschiavos) were born was moved up the mountains away from the sea three
times in its history. Some say this was to escape the depredations of the
Corsairs.

The ethnic group in the US that were victims of the largest number of
lynchings (as a percent of their population numbers) were not African
blacks, but Italians. The largest mass lynching that took place in the US
was of Italians, not African blacks.

"Indeed Mississippi and Louisiana were to become a worldwide symbol of Anti
Italianism when, in 1891, eleven Italian immigrants in New Orleans were
lynched due to their alleged role in the murder of the police chief David
Hennessy.[4]

This was one of the largest mass lynchings in U.S. history."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Italians_in_Mississippi

Most people are skeptical of this, where are the Italian Sharptons and
Jacksons screaming for compensation?

2013-09-10 Thread Randy Bennell

Thanks Clay. I was pretty happy to dodge that one too.
That is the second time I have had a similar near miss with the car.
I think perhaps its low power is what saved me in the sense that the
other driver took off quicker than I did and was ahead of me rather than
beside me. Given the size of the SUV, he might not have seen me beside
him even if he looked unless he used his right side mirror.

My son's comment was, that insurance would likely pay me more than I might be
able to sell the car for.
Always a bright side I suppose as long as one does not get injured.

my experience with insurance is sometimes they pay you too much but often
too little. better to just avoid crashing!

you have to drive defensively or you will get wrecked. there are few
incentives in place to correct the behavior of bad, ignorant, indifferent
or negligent drivers. go 25 over the limit and go to to jail but the law
does not care if you regularly create general mayhem on the roads

[MBZ] Bad Drivers

2013-09-09 Thread Randy Bennell

I just about had the old 300D wiped out yesterday.
My younger son and I were on our way to a big car show that is sponsored
by the Fabulous 50's Ford Club here annually in early September.
We were turning left in one of those double left turn setups, if you
understand what I mean.
We were southbound on McPhillips Street turning east onto Leila Avenue.
There are 2 dedicated left turn lanes and I was in the outside lane.
A fellow of Asian descent was in the other lane in a late model black
SUV. The light turned in our favour and we both moved forward but as he
turned the corner he drifted from the inside lane to the outside lane
where I was.
I don't know how I managed to dodge him and I don't think he even knew I
was there. What a jacka**.

My son's comment was, that insurance would likely pay me more than I
might be able to sell the car for.

Always a bright side I suppose as long as one does not get injured.
