Which reminds me, I have some URO tie rod assemblies, I can't remember if they're for 201 or 123. I could get the part numbers if anybody wants such a thing. I'd let them go for shipping, I can't in good conscience sell a URO part. -Curt From: Kaleb C. Yup. One of the last things I got from Rusty before the Trent debacle were a set of “Lemforder” motor mounts for the S500. I just ordered that part and when all the way to the process of entering credit card info and it worked fine for me. If you go to the main site you have 3 catalogs to choose from, the direct link to the one you want is importecautoparts.com. If that is the one you were in, must be something on your end maybe. They also have a closeout or special catalog. If you go there and put your vehicle in, you can see what closeouts or specials they have for that car sort of like rock auto. I saw some good deals in there. On 6/4/2016 9:06 AM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: The place you linked to. If you plan to keep it for the rest of your life, starmarked is probably the best, unless you can buy the OEM part made to the same specs as the ones they ship to MBZ. Northlake has two very different front suspension drawings on their web site, is this the right one? Re: [MBZ] Ball joint(s) 1985 300D
If your joint is making noise, the boot probably failed long ago. Visual inspection of the boots is easy. Take a look at the steering joint boots and guide (brake) rod mount while you are underneath. The job requires considerable disassembly so it may be worth replacing other failing rubber at the same time. The actual ball joints are cheap, good ones are only like $30 ea. The required labor is not cheap. I think my last ones (for W126) were TRW and they are fine. Replacing them requires removing all the brake stuff and then removing the steering knuckle, which requires a couple cheap presses. Most folks beat out the old knuckle with a big hammer (4 lb min). Pressing in the new one requires a special press tool (like $300+) although there is a cheaper and effectie "pipe-like" tool (available on ebay) that you use with a 12-20 ton press. A few folks have reported success using a standard C-clamp ball-joint kit but I'm skeptical that this would damage the new joint. I did the job without using spring compressor (although I have one); the shock and wood block (under the LCA) held the lower control arm while the knuckle was removed. But replacing most of the other rubber (except upper control arm) will require a good spring compressor. Rusty used to sell a front suspension kit, do it all at once for several hundred bucks and then you're done with it for another 20 years. Re: [MBZ] Ball joint(s) 1985 300D
Michael, There is a risk that the ball joint will completely fail, at which point you rapidly transition from a driver into a passenger, and Bad Things happen when that wheel comes off. In your shoes, I would get that joint replaced ASAP. I had one get questionable, I had squeaking going on that I could not diagnose, and then one day the steering got a bit funny and "Ah HAH!" I knew that was a ball joint, so I had the car towed to my Indie for repair. Have the other joint evaluated, if the boot is compromised it must be replaced. If the boot is intact, a good MB mechanic can check the joint for play, and then advise you accordingly. If no play, really no need to replace it unless you want to be proactive. - Max Charleston SC On Tue, May 24, 2016 at 7:28 AM, Michael Esh via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > My left/ drivers side lower ball joint is screeching and complaining every > time I go over a bump. > Is this normally replaced in pairs or can I just replace the one side? > Is it ok to continue driving the vehicle until I have the part replaced? > I seen prices from $17.00 to $44.00. [MBZ] Ball joint(s) 1985 300D
My left/ drivers side lower ball joint is screeching and complaining every time I go over a bump. Is this normally replaced in pairs or can I just replace the one side? Is it ok to continue driving the vehicle until I have the part replaced? I seen prices from $17.00 to $44.00. I plan on driving this vehicle for many more years and do not want to do this again. Any recommendation on a supplier and manufacturer would be appreciated.
