I'm a little late on this thread - sorry -- IMO, my son has the best system for listening to music - a usb port on the SONY stereo in his car -- he bought a 4gb thumb drive which I loaded roughly 50 or more CDs onto and there's still space left. Youngest son who now drives the W140 (and is totally in love with it) wants to put an aftermarket head unit in it. Not a problem as long as I do the install. This also means I will get the freshly rebuilt Becker that's currently in it to put in the R129. It has a good Becker in it, but I don't have the GROM iPod interface as it's in the W140. He has a buddy who works at Best Buy who is going to let him use his employee discount. I gave him the number for the Metra adapter harness so the install will be very, very clean... Side note: I was a little concerned about how he would drive the car, as he's never had anything bigger than a 4-banger. Two tanks of gas so far and he's getting better mileage that I did! The Kenwood in my 190D (MB content!) has USB. I have a 1GB USB stick in the car which a few albums on it. Then I discovered it can control my iPhone 5 via the radio's hand held remote (which I'd almost lost) and I use that way more than the USB drive. It wasn't an expensive radio either, maybe $90. I put 2 Sonys in the 300Sd and the Sub, use ipods with them, vaguely recall they would do a USB stick. The SL500 had a cheap Pioneer in it with iPod control and USB. While the iPod interface was nice, the unit itself was underpowered and incapable of driving the BOSE system. When I put the old Becker in it the system was totally different. Since the Pioneer had little juice, the sound out of it was really poor. You have to have at least 4 volt preamp outputs to drive the BOSE systems. I had no idea how important this is until I came across this setup.
