Re: [MBZ] Car collection
Yeah, that's what I know it as too. Back when tires were not so great, and you could expect several punctures when going on tour, it was a way to extend the back end and and take along 2 or more extra wheels and tires with you. By the 50s, tires had improved greatly, but the idea stuck around as a styling item, much like that fake chrome rad on most of our mercedes, which hasn't required us to unscrew the Star and add water, for about, oh, 70-80 years. ;-) Ed 300E 2009/9/23 WILTON wilt...@nc.rr.com I've always heard it called Continental kit. Yep, me, too. I've always thought that, even on the Continental, itself, 'bout '39 or '40, it was sorta silly. (Course, spare tires were mounted on the backs of cars long before that, but by '39/'40, they'd gone inside the trunk on most cars.) Not just silly - really ridiculous, when they started hanging them on Fords, Chevys, etc., in mid-fifties, and actually had people paying extra money for that gaudy crap added onto the backs of their cars. BTW, I think Continentals (Mark something) even now have a little hump on the rear of the trunk - a holdover from the spare tire hanging back there. I have an '86 Mark VII, which certainly does have a vestigial trunklid hump. The Mark VIII, sold from '93 to '98 or so, did too. No current Lincoln does. To my eye the hump really spoils the lines of both the Mark VII and the Mark VIII, and I've contemplated various ways to get rid of the one on my car, since it needs a repaint and some other minor bodywork anyway. Gee, I thought they all looked pretty nice. A good representation of an era now gone. I can't say I particularly want any of them but I do enjoy looking at things like this at car shows. I never cease to be amazed at the effort that some folks put into these old cars. I would much rather see something like this than some of the later muscle cars. I enjoying going to show or cruises and looking at all the cars. I wouldn't want to own them all, but there are few cars I wouldn't accept a ride in. I'm not a big fan of the 50s, but they represented the time well, as do all cars, and I think that's part of their charm. They're kind of rolling time capsules. I'm glad when any car is restored, preserved, and continued to be shared with the generations that weren't around when they were the norm on the roads. I agree. The little Hondas with the loud exhausts and low profile tires are not my cup of tea but it is another generation of car nuts doing their thing and as such a good thing. Same as the old geezers working on their 50s cars - pretty cool but I just don't have the time to get too into that sort of thing. I admire their tenacity etc. Randy -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com]on Behalf Of E M Sent: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 3:28 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Car collection I enjoying going to show or cruises and looking at all the cars. Re: [MBZ] Car collection
I remember when I was 3 or 4 going to pick up the new baby blue 58 Pontiac Super Chief with my parents, it was a really exciting thing so I remember it pretty well. That car was fast as hell at the time, I think that is why they got it. It had the gas filler located behind the driver side tail light, I remember going to gas stations and the kid looking all over, then my mom or dad would have to go show him where it was. Too cool. It got wrecked when my dad t-boned some woman who pulled out in front of us, in some little town in northern Indiana, I was in the back seat and got a physics demonstration. No seatbelts. I think it got traded in after repair on a new 63 Catalina, dk blue. --R relng...@aol.com wrote: If you like chrome and godawful color combinations, you will be right at home here... http://www.59ford.com/carfriends/themountaintop.html -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
