Re: [MBZ] Diesel prices are making me angry

2005-10-29 Thread Chase Kaufman
I think the top speed on the '87 300TD should be higher than 123, I can hit
125 (130 down a long steep hill) in my '91 300D 2.5Turbo with the stock 2.65
diff and 4600rpm limit. I thought the '87 124s had a 5000 or 5100rpm limit
with the same 2.65 rear end, that should make them good for a true 130+.

I think we need Marshall to chime in here with
official top speed numbers. I am almost certain I saw
102 for the SD, which means I have a hard time seeing
yours going 115 - not saying you are lying, just
wondering what's not right here - maybe my car and my
firgures...? Anyone got official figs and if SD is 102
tops, why does Luther's go 115...wrong size tires?

If you push it off Pike's Peak it will go even faster. The rated top
speed of a 124.133 is 202 km/h (126 mph) and that's NOT at 5100 rpm but
closer to the speed at which maximum power is generated (~4600-4800
rpm). Top speed is NOT controlled by the governor in that car, but by
the maximum power the engine can generate.

The purpose of the governor in THAT car is NOT to limit ground speed,
but to limit engine speed so the engine will not self destruct.

Top speed for a 300TD 124.193 is NOT 202 km/h but 195 km/hr (121 mph)
and all the same arguments apply.

So wierd...

I noticed on the way to work today that diesel had again DROPPED this time
$0.06 to $2.79.

Gas is $2.55 so I'm not doing the happy dance but its still much cheaper for me
to drive Hammie than my pickup truck.

I drove all the way to work today without exceeding 70mph (I got up early and
had the time) most of the way I cruised at 60mph which incidentally is where
Hammie sounds the happiest. I'm going to make an effort to go slow on the way
home too, I'm curious if I can get my best mileage ever number above 32mpg.

I filled up my wife's gas guzzling Ford Explorer 4X4 yesterday. Gas was
$2.13. I also filled up my MB diesel and it was $3.35. If I took both
of these on the highway and used 20 gallons. I could travel 400 miles
in
the Explorer and 680 miles in my benz. At the cost of fuel, it would
cost me less per mile to drive the gaz guzzling SUV. The cost per mile
is 9.39 cents per mile (fuel only) and 10.15 cents per mile to drive
the
benz. I understand that the SUV is going to get much worse mileage in
the city and then the benz is going to be far cheaper. I also
understand
that a mix of the two, the benz might still be slightly cheaper, but
come on, if I want to take a long trip, it does not make sense to drive
the SUV. Who knew that getting 34-35 mpg wouldn't be enough?

I'm wondering what happened that caused the 96-99 bodies to rust - here in
the North East, I see loads of '87 - '95 124's with perfect paint and
bodies- even with the horrible salt we get. But I see many of the newer
style with rust, especially on the rear trunk and front fenders. Did MB
change their metal, thickness or coatings? Why would they do that- they
sure got things right on the 124's.

Officially the top speed for 617.95 powered cars was 165-170 for the
123s and 170-175km/h for the 126s (5 km/h slower BEFORE 1985). That's

300D/CD/TD.

I know that doesn't make a lot of sense when you play with the gear
ratios, engine speeds and tire sizes, but those ARE the number Mercedes
publishes. I know of more than a couple of 126.120 and 116.120 owners
that have exceeded 110 mph (numbers from 113-117 come to mind) in
situations where they were clocked with GOOD equipment. It seems that
while staying within the outside edge of the allowable specifications
you could exceed the published top speed by about 7%. Maybe that
requires a tailwind.

I also believe that we fail to give television the proper credit for
population reduction (in the U.S. at least). Before television, there
were few other entertainments available for the evenings. ;)

There could be much truth in that. Just looking at India [I spent some time
there and a lot more doing some detailed studies of population and
development], the birth rate shows an almost exact inverse relationship to
the education level for women [wouldn't touch that for the US, but it does
suggest an approach to population control in many poor countries], and also
to the hope of financial advancement. IE, when you have nothing, one more
mouth to feed = the possibility of another worker to help the family; when
you have a little and want a better life style, another child is held to be
an economic burden. A new TV beats out that extra child many times. I'll
leave the relationship of those items to more affluent societies with low
birth rates to the social scientists.

can't you just buy your own crude oil and refine it yourself?

On 10/26/05, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Over the last 3 years, the cost of crude has represented about 50% of
the cost of a gallon of diesel (give or take a little). Taxes have

than 10% of the costs in early 2002 to about 5% now.

What HAS really gone up? The cost of refining has gone from close to 5%
in early 2002 to more than 20% in the fall of 2005. And remember that 5%
of the cost of $1.50 diesel in 2002 was 7.5 cents a gallon, while 20+%
of $3 diesel is about 60 cents!

[MBZ] Diesel prices are making me angry

2005-10-25 Thread Donald Snook
I filled up my wife's gas guzzling Ford Explorer 4X4 yesterday. Gas was
$2.13. I also filled up my MB diesel and it was $3.35. If I took both
of these on the highway and used 20 gallons. I could travel 400 miles in
the Explorer and 680 miles in my benz. At the cost of fuel, it would
cost me less per mile to drive the gaz guzzling SUV. The cost per mile
is 9.39 cents per mile (fuel only) and 10.15 cents per mile to drive the
benz. I understand that the SUV is going to get much worse mileage in
the city and then the benz is going to be far cheaper. I also understand
that a mix of the two, the benz might still be slightly cheaper, but
come on, if I want to take a long trip, it does not make sense to drive
the SUV. Who knew that getting 34-35 mpg wouldn't be enough?

It is usual for the maintenance cost of a diesel to be considerably
lower than for a gasoline car and the longevity of diesel engines is
often about double - so even when the fuel costs per mile are equal or a
bit higher, the cost of operation the diesel is USUALLY lower.

All we need to do is legislate to make use of diesel for heating and
making electricity ILLEGAL. Then, the price of diesel will drop below
the cost of gasoline (at least for a while)!

Re: [MBZ] Diesel prices are making me angry

2005-10-25 Thread Trampas

bad about getting 560SEL, especially after the gas price increase. Now I
feel better about driving the 560SEL.

Regards,
Trampas
