larry, are you certain that any of the plugs are bad? they're not really
a
maintenance item unless you're in a cold clime, and i wouldn't replace
them

until the dash light stops working. Then replace all 5.

BTW, I agree - on my 123, they were a snap to replace (one 12mm
ratcheting

wrench later). the 124 plugs look like a bear.

Thanks Marshall - I'm planning t change them because I have 104k on them -
plus I have cold running problem I'm mentioned here - ahd you suggested it's
possibly carbon build up which needs driving long distances to cure - which
it;s getting. My wife drives it every day to work - 100 miles RT at 70mph.
With Summer here it should clean itself out more quickly.

Thanks to all -- I'll replace the GPs when I feel like punishing myself. ;-\

I don't understand the question. When a plug goes bad the resistance
usually increase some to a lot.

A set of glow plugs in an engine that has after start glow function
doesn't last as long as they do in older cars. 90-150kmi would be good
life for an engine with 15-30 second after glow. The later engines with
up to 180 second after glow are likely to fail after 60-100kmi depending
on how many miles per cold start.

If you think the plugs are all original and you have more than 100kmi on
them, I'd CHANGE them all and keep the good ones as spares.

The dash light doesn't always catch them. For example, I have a
weirdo 190D that had one open plug and one that draws almost
exactly 2x the current. If 2x had not been in #1 hole the light
would never have caught it. (The warning light works by balancing
the current fed #1 against that drawn by the rest. It's an elegant
little magnetic circuit. Translation: tricky beast, but very
reliable [within its limitations], effective, and ultra cheap.)

Testing them is easy using a digital ohmmeter. Just measure to
ground from each terminal in the (disconnected) GP plug to the
relay. This, it should be noted, did _not_ catch my 2x current
eater. I used a clamp-on DC ammeter to do that when I couldn't
figure out what was still wrong with the light after I replaced
the one open plug and resoldered the GP relay (which it also
needed).

Except when the resistance of a plug slowly increases. I've had that
happen several times!
