This isn't the voice of experience talking, but wouldn't a cracked evap leak out all the fluid, while a leaky seal or schrader valve might leave it low on charge and cooling, but not cooling well enough? Out in the Mojave desert, they paint them all white. Some paint them white with a brush. Some with rattle cans. They do it for a reason! When I was in the ISUCFV Marching Band, everyone had black shoes when we went on field. It didn't matter what color the shoes were when the wearer put them on. Kinda the same principle in reverse.
