There is easily $8k-$10k or more of "deferred maintenance" needed on this car.
And that's not addressing the paint condition.

There was a fairly nice W116 on MB Market last week:

Bid for your chance to own this 1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD on The MB Market.
Finished in Astral Silver Metallic (735) over Black MB-Tex (101), this classic
sedan is powered by a 3.0L turbodiesel engine paired to a 4-speed automatic
transmission.

RNM at $6k. It needs things, too, but it's definitely better than Kaleb's in a
lot of different ways.

I think the market is starting to slow down for some of these "classics".

I would expect that 316K miles does not help sell it. The car just looks
worn, especially on the inside.
Also, the rusty air cleaner under the hood is a turn off. Clean it up
and paint it.

I've looked at that but $700 is a lot to spend. Way more than I spent on the
car! I know my AC compressor is locked up also.

I'd be happy with just a way to turn the AC on and off, and manually regulate
the heat and fan speed, like a standard 1979-era car would let you do. I really
am capable of moving a lever if I get too warm or too cold. I wonder how hard
it would be to cobble that together?

look into removing it.

I think people might want a W116 that's near-perfect, but you are probably
right that their value as any kind of project car is low.

They defintely have a "dated" look compared to a more modern car so that
will limit interest as well.

For your car an interior detailing would help a lot and doing something
about the peeling clearcoat. Cosmetics matter for selling. Charge up the AC
with some R12 replacement and see if it works.

People are looking at your ad and seeing all the work that needs to be
done, rather than imagining themselves owning and enjoying the car.

It has had quite a bit of work done to it but still needs a fair
amount.  I am probably going to see about charging up the AC with a R12
replacement or convert to 134, replace the shocks and window seals and
drive it every now and then.  Might explore doing something about the
paint on the horizontal surfaces.
