Not really necessary, as the coolant will disappear when you drain the
block.

Whilst the block and radiator are draining, change the thermostat.
The M103 motor is a pain to change the coolant in, as it traps air up
the top and there is a special plug at the top of the head to let the
air out.

Re: [MBZ] How to force thermostat open

2011-08-30 Thread Curt Raymond
Ahhh now heres a debate we haven't had in a long time that'll get people riled
up.

Drilling holes in an MB thermostat won't do diddly. The thermostat works by
closing one coolant passage while opening another. For some strange reason I
don't completely understand the coolant won't flow through the radiator without
the thermostat actually being open, if it doesn't close off that other passage
it doesn't redirect flow.

This is on 61x engines anyway, I haven't tried on 60x.

Its true, try running a 61x without a thermostat, overheat city. Actually its
stranger than that. From cold they'll usually run quite some time without a
thermostat but if its warm and you shut it down and restart it'll overheat like
crazy. I found this one out the hard way on my '81 300TD.

Yes, it would be.

Mercedes thermostats are double-acting valves: they open up one passage
(the one to the radiator) and close the other (the one that bypasses the
radiator).

If you don't do both, circulation will not flow correctly.

Wedging open a thermostat is the only correct way to do it. I think Jim

Correct. Bypassing the3 radiator when cool warms the engine faster - getting
it up to operating temp as soon as possble, also providing cabin heat faster
than most other cars, IMHO.
