It took him about a year to build up a return/referral clientele (which he had to start over with when he moved to another dealership). He was very scrupulous about being honest and dealing straight with his customers and was lucky to work at a dealership that did business that way (of course, it took the aforementioned move to get there). Business was up and down, so he was careful to put some money aside when times were good to cover the not so good times. He did get some good deals on trucks and cars, and he helped me and our family out several times by spotting good used car deals as they came through the dealer. Good luck!!! Then there is the moral dilemma of selling cars to people you know can't afford them and will most likely have them repossessed. Putting up with people who take up 2 hours of your time and then change their mind. Getting into a car with a total stranger and have them take you for a drive, which may well be your last. I would put this in the desperate pile or in the do it for now until something better comes up pile. Perhaps you should get into pharmaceutical drug smuggling anti depressants would be a big mover. I think regardless of the economy, there is so much personnel turnover in car sales that the dealers are always hungry for fresh meat. Seems like every time I've had dealings with a new car store for any length of time (e.g. seriously considering buying a used car sitting on their lot), they've offered me a job, and I am not exactly Dale Carnegie. I don't know, selling cars right now does not seem to be the way to get ahead very quickly. You know so much more about the other aspects of the business, and have some fairly unique smarts about the technology and process and other aspects, you should have them working for you.
