Subject: [MBZ] I got them out!!!

It was fairly warm in the Big Room today, so I worked on getting the rear
axle half-shafts removed from the 1980 300SD which has been sitting up on
jackstands for months.

I had previously removed the bolts from the outer ends of the
half-shafts, unfastened the brake calipers and hung them with coat hanger
wire from the antisway bar, drained the differential, removed the rear
cover from the differential to look around inside, and put it back on to
contain the stench from the gear oil.

Today I again removed the rear cover and then used one of my radio
removal tools (140 589 02 33 00) to pull the axle clips. I then jacked
the differential (without rear cover) as far as it would go. I took the
15 mm socket on the 3/8" extension and a newly-acquired 5# dead blow
hammer from Harbor Freight and drove the outboard ends of the shafts
inward and out of the wheel hubs. After sliding them to the back like
Philip said he did, I was able to pull the shafts outward and remove them
from the car.

I did have to do the work in 3 or so streches with rest between them, but
I was able to get it done! The attached pictures show the progress and why
I need to have them repaired.
