I saw my groundhog this morning. He seems to be about 10 percent less
skittish. Maybe it's the strawberries I've left out for him as a bribe to
NOT eat any more okra.

Try growing watermelons, and having 200lb varmints walk down a row in
the melon patch, kicking a hole in a melon and taking a sip, kicking a
hole in the next melon and taking a sip...and you can't just shoot a
deer for vandalizing your garden.

2017-08-28 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Young daughters cat was death on blue jays. When he went outside they would
swoop and peck at him. He'd stop and roll over on his back. When the blue jays
swooped he would grab at them and snag them once in a while. Then he would
bring the dead jay into the house and lay it at my wifes feet. This did not
make her happy, but we never figured out how to stop him.
When the hedge or plants around the back yard produced berries, the jays would
eat them and stagger around like a drunk, but I never remember the cat catching
any of them then for some reason.

I could be wrong, but none of those solutions sounded particularly
non-lethal.

This morning, I found the strawberry had been removed from the trap and set
just in front of it. My groundhog must belong to Mensa.

When I lived in WI there were still a number of mink ranchers around the plant
where I worked. They had a wooden box on the back of a four wheeler with the
exhaust plumbed through it that they rode around the property. When it was time
to "harvest" the mink, they drove up to the pens, took them out one at a time,
put them in the box and revved the engine for a minute or two.

Open the box, remove the now deceased mink, and move on to the next one...

You first got to determine if he's a Republican or Democratic groundhog since
everything in the Washington area is either Republican or Democratic.
If he's a Republican groundhog, you can catch him, take him out in the woods
somewhere, and he'll make his own living in the wild.
But if he's a Democratic groundhog you might as well resign yourself to feeding
him the rest of his life.
(Sorry, Dan. couldn't help myself.)

Once in the trap, assuming you've got access to a car with a gasoline engine:
Put trap with animal in to a large garbage bag. Tie garbage bag over the end
of the exhaust pipe. Rip a small hole at other end of garbage bag. Start
engine, listen to radio for ten minutes or more. Shut off engine, empty trap
into garbage bag, close up bag and put bag in dumpster.

Try growing watermelons, and having 200lb varmints walk down a row in the melon
patch, kicking a hole in a melon and taking a sip, kicking a hole in the next
melon and taking a sip...and you can't just shoot a deer for vandalizing your
garden.
Seeing the carnage in my grandparents' garden when I was about 5 years old left
an impression on me. Even at that age I knew what a horrible waste it was, to
the point I can still close my eyes and visualize those dark green melons with
hoof prints in them today.

Breaded and deep fat fried okra is not too bad although okra is an acquired
taste. Even my childhood dog Charlie often had to eat boiled okra 2 or 3 times
before he could keep it down, so there wasn't much use feeding it to him under
the table instead of gagging it down myself.

Okra is a low carb, high fiber vegetable which may be the reason health food
addicts have a sad look on their faces.

Sounds like a good plan, soak the meat overnight in milk to remove some of the
gamey taste. Dredge in flour and pan fry before you add to the stew for better
flavor.
I don't think it'll be all that tough though, they don't do a whole lot of
running really. Squirrel isn't that tough for instance and they move around a
lot more.Squirrel is kind of like chicken, I'd expect groundhog to be similar.
As I understand it the worst part is dealing with a thick layer of fat under
the skin.
Probably theres a bunch of YouTube videos on it...

No problem.
Probably will be a bit tough so I would suggest a basic groundhog stew.
You may have to go out and buy some veggies to put in the pot with the
meat if it has consumed the garden  but it is a good time of the year
for farmers' markets to have fresh veggies at good prices so that should
not slow you down too much.
Given your intentions,  I would suggest that you shoot it or trap it
rather than poison it.

The good thing is it's only okra. Not much good for anything but
animal food anyway. BTW if you are serious about growing that
stuff you should probably water it better, it looks kind of wilted.

The groundhog reminds me of when I was 14 or so and wanted a 22.
Both parents, especially Mom were against it. I wore them down
and got it, finally. Mom always complained when I took it out to
the woods to practice. Then came the day a groundhog attacked her
garden. I was sent up to my room, overlooking said garden with
very firm orders to shoot that thing, from Mom. One shot later
the groundhog was done for. I never heard another thing about
going out to practice in the woods. Funny how things work.
