Re: [MBZ] Ignition Key will not turn
I forget which car but one of my MBs needed both. Got a new cylinder and about a month later it was sticking again, got a new lock and all was well. The moral of the story is if you replace the cylinder and need the lock its because you ALSO needed the lock, the cylinder was probably bad... -Curt Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 17:57:35 -0500 From: Kaleb C. I agree on the urgency, unless you are careful to apply my technique: Before you shut off the vehicle, 1. place the wheel just in the middle of its slop. 2. turn the key all the way to zero, then back to position one. 3. this way its all ready for your next start, and it is not locked up 4. if parking in a non trustworthy location, you may now remove tumbler with a paper clip (yes, I suppose someone could still start vehicle with large flat screwdriver with tumbler removed) Be careful of parking on hills, especially with wheels turned, as this invites solid lockup. I have gotten around this problem by squirting some lube I have called Bike Aid. Got it from Harley dealership. Squirt it down into the hole tumbler comes out of. Problem is that it seems to wear off. And I dont want to see the mess it leaves in there. Its something like molybdenum somthing or other. On occasions I have locked up, I have employed technique consisting of violently twisting key, yanking wheel back and forth, and kicking steering column. Then remembering to say prayer of thanks. I had a similar problem on my coupe that was solved by squirting a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil into/onto the lock pin that goes from the ignition lock cylinder chamber to the steering column. Not that I know of. If you'll be more comfortable with it, get the lock assembly, too. I've ordered and replaced several tumblers/cylinders, and I've had the ENTIRE lock/switch assemnbly out of my 87 300D (coupla months ago for evaporator swap), but I've never installed a new lock. Check with Rusty; I know the tumbler cylinder is very reasonable; 'think the lock is, too. Why don't you just shove a bent paper clip into the little hole and pull the ignition cylinder out NOW? Then you've beat house at Blackjack. Turn, push, remove, smile. Trust me -- there are few things worse (a vasectomy NOT among them) than removing the ignition cylinder once the pins lock up. Re: [MBZ] Ignition Key will not turn
I don't know -- looking from the outside, it is so simple -- just yank the cylinder now while you can! Then call Rusty and get a new one. In have a small piece of paper taped to my computer display (don't forget what I do for a living) -- YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID. I am not saying anyone involved is stupid -- unless the key works that last time and then the individual spends $700 doing what a paperclip could have fixed. [MBZ] MBZ Ignition Key will not turn
My son has a 87 420 SEL and today he couldn't get the ignition key to turn in the ignition switch. We have two keys and both will not turn in the switch (as if it's the wrong key). He said this has been a gradual problem. It does turn slightly in the switch - but not enough to reach the first indentation. I'm hoping it is a key problem and not a switch problem - easier to order some new keys. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Re: [MBZ] MBZ Ignition Key will not turn
Next time you get the key to turn (if there is one...) you MUST leave the key turned!!! (I have had success by turning against the key and wiggling the steering wheel back and forth until the key turns.) The tumbler cylinder has failed and you need to order a VIN keyed tumbler from Rusty, your local stealership, or MB Classic yesterday. Remove the cylinder at anytime after you get it to turn. Turn the lock to position 2 (run position) and insert a paper clip into the small hole on the face of the tumbler. This will allow the black ring to unscrew off the cylinder. Replacement is the same as removal. Here is a tutorial on how to remove the cylinder if you cannot get the key to turn. http://dieselgiant.com/mercedes_diesel_maintenance_tips1%20page%202.htm Hope this helps. [MBZ] Ignition key will not turn
Oh, have we ever!!? Most of us have if we've had a Mercedes long. Here's another re-post of my Oct 07 key/lock ordeal on my 87 124. It's long, but please read all of it or skip directly to using the sander to vibrate the tumblers. Don't give up! First, with the car's VIN, order a new lock cylinder from Rusty; or a dealer; 'comes with new key. If you need additional instructions for the 126 cylinder RR, I may be able to fax 'em from my manual. I think it's slightly different from 124. Again, don't give up! Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2007 9:13 PM Subject: 124 tumbler close call! Early morning several days ago, I drove my now nearly showroom 87 300D a few blocks to dental appt. 'Parked at curb out front. About 45 min. later back to car. Key would not go all the way in! (Only prob. I've had with it before was coupla times with wheels sitting on a bump or pavement ridge, etc., causing lock to bind, which I noticed immediately and moved steering wheel slightly to turn key. I also noticed when I got the car 3 yrs. ago that the front face of the tumbler seemed loose - I could move the face of the tumbler around easily.) In front of dentist's office, I jiggled and pushed on the key furiously while yanking on steering wheel. After about 10 min., got key fully inserted; spent another 20 min or so jiggling key and wheel with no success to turn key. ''Called AAA for tow. Hour later tow driver called while looking for me on wrong street. 10 min. later tow arrived - but it was not a TOW truck, it was haul-back. Meanwhile, I had spent time waiting for tow jiggling steering wheel and key with no success. Tow driver backed up to front of car. I told driver key wont turn, steering locked. Also told him not to remove key. He got in the car to try the key and immediately removed it. Of course, it wouldn't go back in. Car too close to curb and slanted too low near curb to get it on truck. Driver spent 45 min trying to get it on truck from front, though I told him early that it may be easier from rear - rear was angled away from curb slightly. Tow driver came to me once (I was sitting nearby with my wife in our other car.) to ask if he could free the locked steering by disconnecting battery. I tried to tell him battery has nothing to do with it - strictly mechanical between key and steering collumn. Tow driver finally moved his truck to rear of the car and got it aboard. I drove our 350SDL the several blocks to our home as the tow driver followed. I pulled in the yard and pointed to the spot to drop the car. I had brought him to the driveway in a direction that would allow backing into the yard without significantly brushing trees against the car. The tow driver screwed that up, though, and managed to drag the right side of the car WAY up into a large crepe myrtle tree 4 TIMES before finally getting in the yard. Rcvd new tumber yesterday via Rusty. While waiting for tumbler, I tried key and wheel jiggling many times with no success in getting it to turn; tried 4 different keys, including the new one. Just getting a key to fully insert each time was quite a job. I had almost consoled myself to the prospect of calling stealer 70 mi. away for tow and $700 to $800 cutting/grinding tumbler and steering lock replacement ordeal, but I don't give up that easily. Today I mounted a key on the triangular removable sanding base of a Bosch detail sander to be used as an automatic jiggler/vibrator. Had to mount it a second time using a 2 inch by 1/2 inch metal bar to extend reach - sander jammed against upper corner of center console without extension. With a key mounted on the sander base extension, I had to shove, bang, jiggle, etc., again to fully insert the key. Finally, though, the key was fully inserted, and I turned the sander on. As the sander hummed and the key fibrated, I applied back and forth twisting force to the sander. THE KEY TURNED after only about 15 seconds! I was ready to do it for an hour! I removed the sander from the key while being careful not to let the key return to OFF position. Also disconnected battery to shutdown accessories while fiddling with switch. With key in #1 position, I inserted release tool I made today from white coat hanger (had to scrape paint off to make it fit slot perfectly). Then I tried to unscrew colar/cover around tumbler as directed in SOME 124 tumbler removal instructions, but needle nose pliers won't grip it; needle nose vise grips won't grip it, and it certainly will NOT TURN on MY 124. After few min. of not being able to grip the collar or cylinder that supposedly would unscrew, I tugged on the key. The tumbler, protective cylinder - all of it slipped right out with gentle tug of the key! I quickly removed the tumbler from its protective cylinder, put the new tumbler in the cylinder and slipped it all

Re: [MBZ] MBZ Ignition Key will not turn
The problem is the tumbler is worn out. If you would have ordered a new one from Rusty and changed it out while you could still turn the key, it would have been a easy 5 min job. Since you cant turn it, you are talking major cutting and drilling to get it out. Might try getting it to turn one last time then dont remove the key till you get a new tumbler. Ken, This is very likely the interlock mechanism not the tumbler. And if it is the interlock then the ignition switch pod has to be replaced. Mercedes sells a replacement pod. You saw off the old one attach the new one in its place with the supplied clamp screws. It's not a small job. It does turn slightly in the switch - but not enough to reach the first indentation. I'm hoping it is a key problem and not a switch problem - easier to order some new keys. And, have heard of a few success stories by raising the front wheels off the pavement, reducing the pressure on the lock. Worth a try vs. a 400.00 cut job!
