Pop rivets can solve a lot of knotty car repairs: replacing bearings in radiator cooling fans, replacing rusted out floor pans with two layers of aluminum roofing valley, and several other fixes I've forgotten. A professional pop rivet tool ($30-40) and a wide assortment of pop rivets, are very good shop investments. [MBZ] It fell off
Go fast pedal fell off Froggy, as I mentioned last week. Airmatic pooped out on the W220. Fresh pump went in at the indy, but same errors, so off to the dealer for diagnosis, which came back as failed sensor on passenger side and rear. Stealership will give me 10% MBCA discount and do work Wednesday. Go fast pedal issue on Froggy went to the indy to see if he was able to fix, as I had been warned not to mess with the car by myself, because he was no longer going to defornicate my "repairs". Turned out indy was not able to effectuate repairs due to rusting off of metal tongue that holds the base of the pedal to the floor. I was advised to contact a body shop to have repair to rusty floor area done. I know a good shop, just expensive, and the job is a bit small for them. I got Froggy back home, out of the rain, and took a bigger look at the pedal and floor. I cut some nice steel to make a flange and base L. The go pedal had failed historically, based on the set of screws holding the metal tab in the base of the pedal, instead of there being a plastic plug. This will make installation hard, but I can machine out a spot in the new base. Guess I will need to visit PnP to get a new clip/retainer/plug. I pulled up the carpet and sound proofing to get a better look at the flooring. Some prior work was done. Looks like another person had faked up a pedal base and attached it in place of the original. That bit of metal is what rusted away. There is a sandwich of metal I now need to figure out if I chisel it off and clean up the flooring, or just weld my solution on top. My POR 15 job on the floor is holding up well, with minimal rust coming through. I was pretty sure I had taken that down to metal when I painted the product on. Guess not as much as I had thought. If you read the description, you will note they refer to "deep forged pulleys". I assume they mean you to do the holding from the front rather than get the tool behind the pulley. There is an MB tool that does essentially the same thing, but it's a little more purpose-built as opposed to the HF generic tool. I can find a link to it when I get home. I question whether the HF tool can get behind the pulley on my W140, which could be an issue. I haven't looked at the pulley in a while, so I'll have to check it out tonight when I get home. The M104 has a hole in the flange to which the thermostatic clutch mounts and a couple of ribs molded on the piece that holds the fan bearing so that engaging the Allen wrench in the hole blocks the fan from turning so the bolt that holds the fan on can be tightened or loosened. Re: [MBZ] It Fell off!
Education isn't cheap. In 1979, I bought #3 stepdaughter a used Celica when she moved to a nearby town. Several months later I asked if she was changing the oil on schedule. She said she didn't need to change the oil, she just added when it got low!! You can imagine my reply but you can't push on a rope. Shortly thereafter I got a call that the car was making funny noises and there was oil everywhere under the hood. When I tore down the engine, it #2 and #3 cylinders looked like they were run with sand (lots of sand) in them. Having no money at the time (I was in the USAF then) I rebuilt the motor at home except for the machine-shop work. One good thing about California building practices back then was there was always a big beam in the middle of the garage: great for pulling engines. In 2010, #1 grandson informed his mom that his oil light was on, and then he promptly did nothing about it. After the engine locked up his parents ended up selling the car, not running. Doubt they got much for it. I'm beginning to think that side of the family is a little brain dead when it comes to things mechanical. Re: [MBZ] It Fell off!
Radiator, belt, probably a fan clutch, and the water pump or bearing, depending on which one failed. On the M103 there is just a bearing for the fan, the water pump is separate, but on all the V engines the fan sits on the water pump. I've had one make funny ticking noises on braking until the broken shaft finally walked out of the bearing, sent the fan and clutch right through the radiator on a sub zero night. Not fun to fix outside!
