Several years ago I bought a case of cheaper Indian made oil filters for the '83 300D and 240D. As usually I bumped the filter on a white surface to be sure there wasn't any debris left from manufacturing. A fair amount of tiny woody looking pieces came out of the first Indian filter. Checked the rest of the oil filters in the case and every one produced the debris. Called the seller who got filters out of the warehouse and found that they yielded small woody pieces too. Returned the case and haven't used anything but Mann filters since then. I was heading the same direction. When you install the filter, does the cover sit all the way down or do you have to draw it down with the 2 nuts? If you have to draw the cover down then you definitely have some interference somewhere. Does anyone know if a filter housing from a later diesel will fit a 300D? If so then you may have a later housing installed - they take the smaller filters. I usually use Hengst, last time I ordered I got the no-name cheapos. Interestingly my last oil analysis shows that at 9xxx miles everything was fine and I could keep going. I changed the oil anyway, the car was making those noises that tell me its time.
