2% soot is the limit right? At nearly 10,000 miles the soot level was still way
under 1%.

The filter doesn't remove small particulate (like soot). It remains
suspended in the oil. It's because of this small stuff that the oil in
your Mercedes needs to be changed every 5-10kmi. If you filtered the
small stuff, the oil could last for 50-100kmi. But you'd be changing
filters every 2.5kmi or so (the way a Mercedes is designed) and adding
 a
qt of oil with each change.

You are filtering out dirt that can cause excess bearing wear but there
are other causes for wear.

Most of what wears from the engine passes right through the filter &
stays suspended in the oil, as it should.

Re: [MBZ] Mann Oil Filters Coming Apart

2007-08-14 Thread archer
Several years ago I bought a case of cheaper Indian made oil filters for the
'83 300D and 240D. As usually I bumped the filter on a white surface to be
sure there wasn't any debris left from manufacturing. A fair amount of tiny
woody looking pieces came out of the first Indian filter. Checked the rest
of the oil filters in the case and every one produced the debris.
Called the seller who got filters out of the warehouse and found that they
yielded small woody pieces too. Returned the case and haven't used anything
but Mann filters since then.

Re: [MBZ] Mann Oil Filters Coming Apart

2007-08-13 Thread Tom Hargrave
I was heading the same direction.

When you install the filter, does the cover sit all the way down or do you
have to draw it down with the 2 nuts?

If you have to draw the cover down then you definitely have some
interference somewhere.

Does anyone know if a filter housing from a later diesel will fit a 300D? If
so then you may have a later housing installed - they take the smaller
filters.

Any chance that an old washer, grommet, or plate is left behind at the
base of the filter housing?

Re: [MBZ] Mann Oil Filters Coming Apart

2007-08-13 Thread Curt Raymond

I usually use Hengst, last time I ordered I got the no-name cheapos.
Interestingly my last oil analysis shows that at 9xxx miles everything was fine
and I could keep going.
I changed the oil anyway, the car was making those noises that tell me its time.
Anyway I'd say that filter was filtering at least the normal number of
contaminents...

When I order, I usually choose the Mann. Last order I chose three
 Hengst.
We'll see how they do..
So...when these Mann filters separate does that allow a path for the
 oil to
go unfiltered you reckon?
