If you 'pump down' a system for disassembly by running it with the liquid line
service valve closed, it mostly ends up in the condenser coil.

There's a minimum line length specification listed in the installation manual,
usually around 10-15'. Going below that can result in overcharge (easy to
resolve if you have a way to weigh the refrigerant you take out) or cause
vibration issues in the indoor unit.

You mean accumulator? Some outdoor units have filter/dryers in them, but
receiver/dryers like you might see in a car aren't commonly there.

Few A/C units and not all heat pumps have accumulators.
Mine (heat pump) has a suction line accumulator in it to keep liquid from
entering the compressor in cold weather, but I'm pretty sure most of the charge
was in the condenser coil when the freight company dropped it off at my house.

As Rich said, everybody in the trade calls the outdoor unit the condenser.

Well it is all in the unit outside, call it what you want, my guy called
it the condenser unit, and that whole unit has the gas tank and
controller and fans and compressor and whatever else inside the box.
The indoor head unit just blows out hot or cold whenever you tell it you
want hot or cold, nothing but a fan and coil in there (and a drip tray
to collect the condensate in the summer), and some control thingie to
tell the outside unit what it wants and how much to blow the fan and
arrange the louvers.

Re: [MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

I'm not sure I understand that explanation, so I'll throw in my own.

The condenser unit (the outdoor unit) comes filled with gas.  You hook
up your lines to the condenser and the head unit(s), there is a tap on
the condenser to attach a vacuum to.  So you pull the vacuum which
evacuates all the lines and the head units (and hope there are no leaks
or you need to go back and check your connections).  Once you get a good
vacuum then you can open the gas tap on the condenser and it floods the
system with the gas. Check pressures, add more gas if necessary (if you
have extra long lines).  You should be heating or cooling or whatever
you want to do.

My guy put some nitrogen in there at first to see if the system would
also hold pressure, you can test the connections with some soapy water
to see if any are leaking (I had one connection on one of the systems
that did not seat well, could hear it hissing, bled off the nitrogen and
refit it, then pressurized again, it was OK to go), if not then bleed
the N and pull the vacuum.

If I was to do this, the exterior unit would be right outside where the
interior unit would be, so I don’t think I would need anything other than the
stock line set. I would need to run a 120 or 240 line over from the
distribution panel, which is on the opposite wall. Attic is easily accessible
for this purpose, and I have at least one double-gang opening left in the
distribution panel.

I’m not sure that it matters, but around here ALL AC work has to be permitted.
I’m not sure if that’s the case if you do it yourself. I’ll have to be careful
about asking, as I don’t want to expose myself to a visit from a building
inspector and a fine for not pulling a permit. Because it’s not for a living
area it might not be covered by the local ordinances.

I like this. Might be a good winter project.

Precharged lines are kind of history now I believe.

Anyway, with minisplits it's all flare fittings so the manufacturer doesn't
have to worry about some idiot getting oxidized copper flakes in the system
from brazing the fittings with air in the lines. Hook everything up, pull a
hard vacuum on the lines and evaporator, ideally you put a micron gauge on it
and make sure it holds vacuum, then open the service valves and fire it up,
unless your line set is too long and you have to add a few ounces of R410a to
compensate.

Dan, you can very easily do this yourself... I've done it many times. I
have systems running in our home, the garage, and a few friends house now.
You can use an R12 gauge set if you don't have a R-410. (I actually use my
R410 set on my R12 cars now).

I ended up with a wholesale account at the local Fujitsu dealer by flashing
my automotive AC license. Pricing is quite a bit lower than the units sell
for online. I don't think the additional cost of a name brand unit is
worth it for your application, but it might be worth looking into at least
to see what the difference really us. I needed a modern system that had
low temperature heating capability, so I wanted a top brand that will
actually work when its 0F outside!

Re: [MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-03 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
For my unit, the condenser (outdoor unit that includes compressor) was
pre-charged (for 25 ft lines) and it had two service valves to release the
charge into the rest of the system. The copper tubes and air handler (indoor
unit) were not charged and the air had to be evacuated from them before
releasing the charge. One of the service valves (on condenser) had a service
port for the vacuum pump. The two tricky parts (IMO) were bending the tubing
without kinking it and re-flaring tubing if you shortened it. A cheapie flare
tool may cause a leak.

Also in my case, the building had non-standard stud spacing, which made things
harder. I also mounted he condenser on the outside wall (vs on a pad) which
was tricky (studs, again).

Scott will have to come online and tell you what he knows but I will
chime in anyway.
I installed AC in my house in about 1984 using a system that came
precharged. I hooked up the outside unit to electric power and installed
the coil in the furnace plenum and ran the precharged copper pipes from
the outside unit to the inside unit. I believe all were sealed and that
when I cranked on the fittings on the ends of the pipes to the coil etc,
it broke seals in the ends of the 2 parts and left it in a condition
where it was ready to use. I did not have a wrench big enough for the
fittings and bought a big crescent wrench which I still have. We ran
that system until about 1987 without any issues. In 87 we added on to
the house and had to move the outside unit so it was reconnected with
longer lines and recharged. It ran fine until about 2 years ago when we
replaced the furnace with a more efficient one and decided to do the AC
at the same time. It was only looked at once in all those years and the
tech declared it to be fine and not require any freon. I hope the new
system that we installed 2 years ago lasts as long. You folks down south
no doubt work your AC much harder than we do here in the GWN.

One says "engineered in Japan" which may mean its manufactured elsewhere;

Re: [MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-03 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Yes it is quite easy but on mine unless I had an AC guy do it there was
no warranty coverage on the units.  So I spent the $100 and my guy came
over and spent about 30min pulling down the system, releasing the gas,
and then adding a bit more as I have a coupla long lines.  But it is
easy enough.  You can buy line sets of various lengths, any excess just
coil them up.  My guy told me not to mess with new flares, they never
get right.

There are many youtube vidoes on installation but the basic procedure is (1)
drill the big hole (like 1.5 in) through the wall, (2) hang the inside bracket,
(3) unfold the short lines and hand the inside unit, (4) place the outside

I know these are relatively inexpensive, but I wonder if they can be found
used? It would be great to make my garage habitable for even a couple of extra
months a year. I just wonder how well it would cope with the heat load of a
hot car added in.

I've been thinking about installing one of those in my garage, it would be
really nice to drop the humidity down in the summer and also be able to get
some work done during the extremes.

[MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-02 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Last year I installed a 1200 BTU “Pioneer” brand mini-split heat pump in my
barn (to control humidity and prevent freezing). I bought it online from an
outfit called HighSEER.com, in FL, for a very reasonable price (IMO).

We just installed a “Trane” mini-split system in the church kitchen and (as far
as I can tell) they are identical.
