Yeah. Bad wire leading to the fuse box from someplace else and there was
damage to the harness out to the light too. I will have to source a bunch of
new wires for the car in future, but was able to bypass the breaks for now.

Found the water pump is leaking now. I am begining to think that I need to
strip the car down and rebuild it. That should at least deal with age related
items. Not going to happen, but I can still think.

If the lights are on, no voltage across the fuse, then the fuse isn't where
you're losing all your volts.

Electrons flow. Volts make things go.

Not running engine, just the lights on. I will have to snag a longer bit of 14
gauge wire to string to the lamp ground for testing.

I got no indication of voltage with the fuse in the holder. I removed the fuse
to get some reading. Fuse was 20a (red) lowest row toward the seat, not

I am headed to the MBCA gathering in the morning. They will be putting cars on
the racks, and maybe this will get a diagnosis and remedy.

Look for a corroded connector somewhere between the fuse box and the
headlight plug. I eventually ran another wire on my old 300D, I never
did find out where the problem was.

It's also possible for the wire to break inside the insulation.

Still no low beam on driver side lamp. Right side lamp does function.

Tested at the headlamp by inserting the probes into sockets. Negative lead to
ground wire. I took off the socket cover to make sure I got the right wire.
Inserted the positive probe to the white lead and the yellow lead wires
separately.

At the fuse box, I removed the 20amp fuse from the socket and then put the
probes to the contacts.

Headlight for low beam is only getting 10.98volts
Headlamp for high beam is getting 11.16 volts

So does this mean it's working again? That voltage
drop (is this engine-off?) sounds plausible for R107.
See: http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/JSLlights.html
Relays will cure a lot of this drop, making brighter
headlights. Our 450SL had 400W of high beams when we
sold it. Take that, deer!

Fuse box shows 11.52 volts flowing from one end of the fuse holder to
the other.

Your terminology confuses me. Volts don't flow, amps do.
Does this mean that you measured 11.52 volts (to ground,
lights on) at both ends of a fuse? Which fuse? I would
expect some slight drop across the fuse if current was
flowing.

The simplest and most direct measurement is to leave the
engine off and turn on the lights, then put the positive
meter probe on the center post of the battery + terminal
(not the clamp, the _post_), and the negative meter probe
on the lamp's non-ground contact. Measure the voltage drop
directly. It's surprising how much it is, and ought to be
around a volt.

You can do the same between the battery negative post and
the other filament lead on the lamp. Usually the ground
side has much less voltage drop. Add the two readings,
then measure the battery voltage directly (lights still on)
and figure the percentage voltage loss of what the battery
had available. You'll be surprised, I know I was. (It was
10%, for a 30% reduction in lumens! And a concomitant
300% extension of bulb life.)

The R107 circuit couldn't be simpler, given that every filament
is fused separately. (Only 2 fuses for 4 high filaments,

Why not start out with a voltmeter? Or maybe even better, a test light?
Sometimes there is voltage enough to show on the meter but not enough to
power things up.

BTW, measuring at the headlight if you have ~12V on the meter try
connecting the bulb and see if it tanks.

So your wiring is screwed up, go back and do it again... Sheesh you talk these
things right to death. If it worked and now it doesn't work and its not the
bulb it MUST BE THE WIRING.

Yeah yeah, I know where the delete key is.

Much the same as doing the euro swap in the /8 as well. R107 has two 4 pins to
deal with the marker and parking lights on one and the high/low on the other.
Peach parts forums had pin out that I mapped out to my application. Both

Re: [MBZ] Mystery headlight

2013-02-22 Thread Peter Frederick
Check the wire, they do break. Also check to make sure it's still
screwed to the bottom of the fuse holder, the screws have been known
to come loose.

Also make absolutely positive that you have a good fuse, they are
separate in the R107, one for each beam of each headlight. Bad
contact at the fuse holder will cause trouble, too.

BTDT, had the same problem on my '75 Audi Fox, had to work on getting
the corrosion off the fuse holder so it wouldn't burn out the fuse all
the time, too much current in the ring around where the fuse contacts
the holder from intermittent contact.

Was similar work required in your R107 conversion?

Ground is shared by everything. All brown wires are good and all other lamps
work. Three prong bulb with shared ground and one for each low and high.
Wiring should not be dorked, as I had it all working for months.

Probably something in the euro light is dorked, if you didn't make a mistake in
your wiring. Bad connector?

Either the low beam element is not getting power (most likely) or ground.

Is the ground shared with high beam? That would eliminate half the potential
problems.

LED and Euro were concurrent. Prior DOT lights worked, change from dual 4 port

Re: [MBZ] Mystery headlight

2013-02-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Do you have a lamp out indicator on that car? If you do , the current
for the headlamps goes through that "relay" (not a relay, but is in
the same box as the rest of them). If that lamp out module is bad,
you can have no headlight.

I never did figure out what the problem was on the old 300D, I finally
just ran a new wire from the fuse to the lamp. Worked fine, but the
lamp out warning came on all the time.

You can also have a loose connection on the bottom of the fuse holder
inside underneath. Not visible until you take the fuse box apart.

Re: [MBZ] Mystery headlight

Last change you made was the LED light replacements, and the low beams worked
in the euro fixtures before? Double check your work, look at ground side as
well as power.

Did you try swapping the driver and passenger halogen bulbs to see if the
problem follows?

[MBZ] Mystery headlight

2013-02-19 Thread clay monroe
450SL is being difficult. Blind in one eye.

Upgraded headlights to euro and for the first few months, the low beams worked
fine. Changed out other bulbs for LED, but the headlights are standard
halogens. it took a few hours to get the wiring harness figured out to make
all the proper connections from the two DOT hook ups.

ANYWAY, the high beams work, the passenger side lows work, but the driver side
low is not behaving. I check the fuse and swapped in a new one, but still no
light. Halogen got swapped out, and still not good. I jumped connectors from
the wire harness to the bulb, but only get high beams. What am I missing?
