[MBZ] neutral safety switch location

2011-03-29 Thread glenn brown

While changing oil in my '84 300D, I took a quick look under the car but didn't
see where the neutral safety switch is located . . . it certainly isn't
obvious. Anybody know? TIA.

Where the linkage connects to the operating lever, specifically.

[MBZ] Neutral Safety Switch - Final Report

2006-06-25 Thread Scott Ritchey
Symptoms: Initially, 82 300SD would not crank in park on very cold days.
Eventually would not crank at all in park unless engine thoroughly warmed up
but always cranked in neutral.

Cause: Replaced neutral safety switch with new from Rusty and did teardown
on old switch. Switch has two sets of contacts (crank and backup lights)
much like a relay except the moving contact is pushed by a cam and these
cams are swept by a lever (slaved to lever on outside of case). The
contacts were fine but apparently the park part of the cam was worn to the
point that it did not move the contact sufficiently. The switch is
basically not repairable as it is riveted together.

Other comments: After disconnecting the shift linkage, it always got in the
way so I (eventually) used a string (run over the top of the tranny) to hold
it up out of the way. Replacing the neutral safety switch was not hard
except for removing and (especially) reinstalling the top screw that holds
the switch to the transmission. I finally got the top screw started by
loosely inserting the (easy) front screw to insure the switch was about in
the right position and then using my left hand to start the top screw. It
is a very tight squeeze. Job probably took 2 hours including setup and
cleanup.

Should you ever do this again (probably not on that car!), replace the
slotted screws with the hex head screws MB sometimes uses. Vastly
easier

Guess I was lucky; my car had hex screws and they were hard enough. Don't
know how I could have done it with slotted.

[MBZ] Neutral Safety Switch

2006-06-15 Thread Scott Ritchey
The neutral safety switch on my 82 300SD has deteriorated over the last year
or so. The engine has always cranked with the shifter in neutral, but park
is another matter. At first, It would not crank in park after a cold soak.
Now it only cranks in park after the engine is hot. I experimented with a
surplus switch and it seems that the neutral position is very sensitive
while park makes contact over a wide range of shifter movement. In any
case, I decided to replace the switch with new. By the way, the shift
bushings are OK.

Question. I'm looking for advice on aligning the new switch. It appears
that the switch is in the neutral position when the hole in the end of
plastic arm aligns with a hole on the plastic switch cover. Is this
correct? Thanks.

[MBZ] Neutral Safety Switch Adjust

2005-12-08 Thread Scott Ritchey
The neutral safety switch on my 300SD is acting up again. It works fine in
warm weather and fine in neutral, but won't start in park when it's real
cold. After the engine has run a while, it restarts in park just fine.

I suspect the switch just needs adjustment and maybe cleaning. Any advice
appreciated. Thanks.

As the shift linkage bushing wears, the neutral safety switch becomes
unreliable - cold weather often induces failure. Replacing the shift
lever bushings is the least expensive and only permanent cure for that.

Re: [MBZ] Neutral Safety Switch Adjust

2005-12-08 Thread Hans Neureiter
Found out on my '82 that the culprit was the bushings in the shift linkage.
Too much play, not bad enough for the tranny, but marginal for the switch.
There is no adjustment on the switch AFAIK.

I'd start with checking the external shift linkage. Are the bushings tight
or sloppy? Is the adjustment perfect?

Scott,

On my 79, I removed the switch, took it apart and cleaned it. It resides in
a very dirty area on the outside of the transmission. Be very careful when
unplugging the wire harness as the locking tabs are brittle and should not be
bent any more than absolutely necessary.

It has worked fine for years since cleaning it.

Why would dirt cause the switch to fail only when it was cold?

Marshall

It is on the side of the transmission, driver's side. It isn't difficult to
get to if the car is on a lift or wheel ramps, but it is pretty close
quarters if all four wheels are sitting on the pavement.

Is this switch readily accessible and would it be advisable to disconnect
the battery, jump across the switch and try and start the car.

Yes, most of the starting circuit is by-passed when you start it from
under the hood at the solenoid terminals. The neutral safety switch is
the most common cause, but it could also be the ignition switch
itself. I think it's time to crawl under the car and examine the
switch on the side of the tranny, and the wires attached (hopefully)
to it.
