I know, I remember those cheapo plug in electric machines. Don’t get me wrong,
I do my part to take care of the earth, but I don’t cave to the whims of the
greenie weenie hypocrites and their fake green feel good virtue signaling
antics.

Airbnb is a massive pita. I was a slave to my cottage when I was renting during
summer. Have to provide first class service to get good reviews. People started
getting needier and needier, pickier and pickier and more and more
disrespectful as the years went on starting to treat like a hotel vs your home.
Unless you hire a vacation rental manager, it’ll ruin your summer.

I initially bought a 3HP, 21” electric one when we first moved to southeast WI.
That lasted one season, not even the whole season, before I got a “real” IC
powered 30” blower with tracks, shield, hand warmers, the whole monty. I did,
however, get a b*dass 10GA arctic rated extension cord when I got the electric
one. I still have the cord, and it’s great for power tools. No voltage drop
whatsoever.

Maybe. They're a TON of work though. You've got to keep up with trimming them
and the wind will make them grow crooked. We've got some trees that have grown
into really weird shapes. They'll eventually make passable lumber though.

Trying to get the farmer to take on another 5-10 acres which would, along with
what he's already farming, pay like 75% of the taxes on the whole place. The
"new" farm is 72 acres, "old" is 80 that we've owned since 2003. I think the
taxes are like $5200 a year on 150 acres...

Understood. That doesn’t account for the interior temperature, however. That
and in the case of the AZ property, high winds can be an issue as well because
it brings down branches and other clutter It’s very localized there because of
the mountains - 2 miles from my house last night there were gusts approaching
60 mph. At my house it was only about 30-35 mph. That can vary depending on the
direction they’re coming from, too.

Unless your place is very remote I can't imagine the ambient temp will be more
than a few degrees different from the closest online reporting station.

If you want cameras and intrusion detection and remote fire alarms that's
another matter, I didn't read that into the original "looking for a home
weather station" question.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Curt will need all his snow machines

2022-01-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Exactly.

I had a very important and expensive shipment from FedEx arriving at the
Flagstaff house today. Because of automation I was able to see when it arrived,
that the driver didn’t bounce it down the driveway, and that they followed the
delivery instructions and placed the box inside the front door/vestibule where
it’s out of sight.

Likewise, if the youngest son is away I want to know that the house is being
properly heated/cooled to prevent any damage.

Furthermore, I have a lot of nice and very expensive tools in my garage. I’ll
know if any of the doors are opened, when, and by whom. I can also see the
activity that’s taking place inside if necessary, too.

I'm no gadget freak, but I have a substantial investment in my homes that I
want to manage and protect. Keeping track of the environmental conditions in
and around it are part of that.

Because I want to know the exact temperature it got to at my place, especially
if it's got an indoor sensor too. At some point if we start doing the Air B
thing I'll need to keep the heat on all winter and knowing the inside temp
would be quite valuable.

Same for the cameras, even in the shorter term having a couple cameras to keep
an eye on the joint seems like a good idea.

I like the WeatherUnderground integration so I can monitor things remotely.

estate remotely. Mitch posted that hotspot the other day, with a weather
station and a camera I'd be all set.
