Re: [MBZ] OT - note from Paris
When I lived in Cambridge I usually made sure I got back from class before dark and before the gun shots started, at least when it was warm. There was a railroad track that ran along behind an old warehouse/factory building, next to campus and where my apt building was (it had been the Advent factory at some point), and the locals liked to go back along there and shoot at each other or something. But it was OK as Cambridge was a Domestic Violence-free Zone (or a Domestic Violence Free-zone), and a Nuclear-free Zone. The Nuclear-free Zone sign was on Mass Ave just a coupla blocks before the MIT nuclear reactor, which was a never-ending source of amusement to one and all. There were also stringent gun-control laws, so those gunshots I thought I heard must have been firecrackers. --R On 11/16/15 8:43 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: I was like 30 minutes late to a meeting in Peru because I was totally entranced watching Warner Brothers cartoons in Spanish in my hotel room. <<... crazies come from all over and you can't prevent crazies from doing crazy things...>> But: Most of the "refugees" are not refugees at all but are taking advantage of the flow to conceal some other motivation. Adherents of the caliphate are a special kind of crazy, part of a culture of which "crazy" is an integral part. They should not be equated to domestic crazies like the Batman movie shooter. They are capable of planning, funding, and arming coordinated attacks, and doing so with adequate opsec. We can prevent many of them from doing their crazy things here. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks, so it matters little whether or not the attackers were actually Syrian citizens. They have also revealed that they intend to imbed with the "refugees". While we may have an obligation to relieve the suffering of refugees, our government has a greater obligation to protect the homeland and our own citizens. You never watched the early iteration of CNN International, which I used to see in overseas hotels on a regular basis. They would rotate the stories every 30 minutes, so that if you watched more than an hour you saw the same stuff, over and over again, with minor embellishments. I once watched it for a whole day when I was stuck in a Sofitel at DeGaulle. Only English speaking channel they had. I was so bored I wanted to rip my eyes out. I did enjoy seeing Tom and Jerry in French, though. That's what I'd like to know. During 9/11, Italian news (and probably others) were way ahead of American news, with more detail. SWMBO called relatives there and started relaying details to me, at work, while I was watching CNN. I was getting angry about how much more info was available to that audience. Speaking of differences in news presentations, over ten years ago we had a local radio station that broadcast CNN HLN audio, Robin Meade was big then, and I would listen from about 6:30 a.m. until 7 while driving to work. Once at work, we'd have a short meeting right after 7, and then I'd have some dead time until 8; flip on the cable tv in the conference room and watch Robin present the same stories from the previous hour. It appears some Amish or Tea Party gun nuts have killed 60 or more people with bombs and automatic weapons and have a concert hall full of people held hostage. More stringent gun and bomb vest control laws to be put in place soon to address these issues, whatever they might be. More migrants and refugees to be taken in and given more benefits to show how much they care. Universities to establish "safe places" where microagressions will not be allowed, and white privilege will be diminished. Investigations to commence to find out why the attackers do not like French people, and how they can reach out better to understand their issues. Judy on the PBS Newshour was struggling to understand who might be responsible for this. It was a total mystery to her. Pinhead professor cautioned against jumping to conclusions, could be some right-wing nuts. No mention of the "M" or "I" words, extreme contortions to avoid those hate words. Then an extended interview with an Asian-American (the other AA) professor who explained what microagressions were, and why they were so insidious and pervasive (hint: white people). Re: [MBZ] OT - note from Paris
Yup. In fact, it needs to be a large scale, systematic effort, mainly on the ground, with Arabic-speaking Muslims doing most of the detailed work . The so-called "Surge" strategy worked quite well until the new administration reversed course (in effect, surrendering and retreating). Considering how thoroughly unreliable the US has been as an ally, I can't see anyone in the Middle East trusting us now. So I doubt that strategy would work now. > -Original Message- > From: WILTON via Mercedes > Sent: Friday, November 13, 2015 6:00 PM > > Little "nuisance" mosquito-bite-type strikes by F-15 fighter/bomber types is > not going to "take care" of it, either.
