Also, tornados only hit a small area, not the whole city or many cities.
They are up to two blocks wide, though can run for miles.

That's true, we have to deal with Tornados AND you are right, there isn't as
much warning for tornados. But, we don't have to deal with a tidal surge on
top of the wind. I don't know if this is scientifically proven, but based on
my observations Tornados in Kansas seem to avoid the more densely populated
areas. In Wichita, there have been significant tornados that hit the outskirts
of the city, but damage inside the city is usually pretty rare (currently
knocking on wood). Obviously there are exceptions. What we have to deal with
in Wichita is hail and wind damage from storms that don't quite become
tornados. There are more of them and they are more frequent but usually less
destructive.

If we could have a big storm that would knock down a couple of hedge (Osage
Orange) trees I would be pretty happy about that!

I think we are about at the peak right now, with no major damage here and
still have power.

Lots of leaves and small branches littering the ground, and the retention
pond about three houses down is way high up its bank but not flooding. The
draining easement behind our house that runs to the pond has a few inches
of water flowing, pretty typical during any large rain storm.

I just stepped outside for a bit, not much rain falling but plenty windy.

Looks like right along the coast, the eye might go over us in the
morning some time.

Raining very heavily, winds at ground level not too bad. I can hear it
roaring up higher though the trees seem to be holding up so far, but
strongest winds not yet here. High tide in an hour or so, I took a peek
out a little while ago, can't see any water up close, will check again
in a while.

Uverse UPS battery seems to be powering the modem and wifi so have the
tubes for now. Will put some more juice into it with the genny tomorrow.

Electric co shut off pwr around 5, took the substation across the road offline
to minimize damage should it get tidal surge. They shut off Kiawah and Seabrook
a bit earlier. Those 2 are barrier islands and might get some significant over
wash. I'm not sure of elevation on the substation but it is near tidal creek s
could get flooded. So most of johns island without power too, they think it
could be 3-4 days. I guess it depends on saltwater getting in their equipment.

I'm at 9.5ft. High tide at 1AM approx 5.5ft. There isn't actually much
sustained wind right now so maybe that will minimize surge although a bit
further south on edisto island it was topping the dunes late this afternoon,
waves and surge. We are lucky it is not next weekend with the full moon tides.

So far here mostly fairly heavy rain, occasional gusts but not a high sustained
wind. I guess that will come later.

We have decided to stay, because the latest forecast has Matthew weakening
from a Cat 2 to a Cat 1 during its pass by Chucktown, and it looks like it
will stay offshore, so we'll be on the weaker wind side of the storm.

I'd still like to move a couple cars to a location less likely for a tree
strike, may do that after I take a shower and get cleaned up.  I suspect
we'll loose power later tonight, might as well enjoy a hot shower and run
the dishwasher, clothes washer etc.

Temps are mid 70's, we've got a steady rain falling, and the wind is
starting to pick up a little.

Lots of TP (toilet paper) and water and food, gas for the generator, two
other different ways to cook if needed (butane stoves).  Plenty of canned
food and dry goods if we need to go for a bit with no ability to cook, but
that wouldn't be too fun if that lasts longer than a day or two.

This morning I awoke at 2 a.m. with something painful in my eye, which
turned out to be a little metal flake.  Yesterday afternoon I decided to
attempt to fix up the suspension on the sail boat trailer, which has gotten
really rusty and would be unsafe to tow on the road.  I used the "sawz-all
of death" to cut off the old stuff, and apparently a metal flake was on my
eyelid or somewhere on my face, and moved into my eye during the night.
Somehow it didn't come off in the shower last night, and waited until early
this morning to strike.  I didn't get a lot of sleep with that thing in my
eye, and my wife and I tried to flush it out of find it and get it out
during the night, but failed.  So at about 9 I headed on down to the
nearest hospital emergency room, which was empty, and within about 30
minutes the doc had found it and removed it and gave me some eye ointment
for the conjunctival abrasions (on the the white of my eye).

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home to see if they had
re-stocked the bottled drinking water, and they had a couple pallets right
in the front of the store, along with a pallet of toilet paper.  The
pressure was just too great, I could not buy just water and ignore that
toilet paper, so I came home with a big package of TP and the two girls in
the house are much relieved.

On the farm we're getting a lot of volunteer pines and spruce in the fields to
the point where I've stopped planting new, mother nature does a better job for
free, why would I pay for trees?
So anyway now I spend most of my time either transplanting trees to places we
do want them or mowing down the trees we don't want, like where they're too
close together.
What I've found interesting is if you take two trees about 2" diameter a spruce
and a pine when you mow down the pine you get a big "WHACK" and the tree is
gone, sliced right off. With a spruce or fir the tree bends down, you drive
over it with the lawnmower chopping off the branches on that side, then it
springs back up after you pass. Turn around and go back and you chop the
branches off the other side. Run over it 4 more times and it MIGHT get cut off.
Usually once all the branches are gone I leave it, next spring the stick will
pull out of the ground when I run over it.
And thats why we build houses out of spruce...

She works in Spartanburg (about 3.5 hr from here in the upstate), has a
house there, gets back here weekends or I go there. She was planning to
come down this weekend but that ain't happening. I was going to go
there next weekend but she will probably come here if she can get here.
We are pretty much at the end of the road, which is 12-20 miles of large
live oak tree canopy so if any of those start coming down it could take
awhile to get the road opened.

I think the lucky thing for Florida, GA, SC, and NC is that the upper right
corner of the storm is staying out to sea. That is the worst and most
powerful part. If the storm had turned inland much more, it would have been
MUCH worse. Im hoping it stays offshore so Charleston and surrounding
areas don't get hammered.

That reminds me of what my father and stepmother experienced in Biloxi. The
house is about 4 miles from the beach, but their neighborhood is right on the
bayou. In fact, the bayou is about 50 yards behind their back yard. I
remember talking to them that morning and he was telling me they had water in
the yard, and then 45 minutes later, the water was up to the deck and then
about an inch from coming in the house. Then, the water rose VERY quickly from
a couple inches to 8 feet. They weren't really prepared. They grabbed a
gallon of water, some chips, a six pack of beer and headed upstairs. They said
they had to wade through the water just to get to the stairs. It was crazy how
fast it came in. Every window on the first floor was busted out and everything
from 8 feet down had to be gutted and replaced. Their cars were floating and
bouncing around in the garage. They have a whole series of photographs taken
from the stairs showing all the furniture floating around. They sai
d an elderly couple across the street (about 2 ft higher in elevation) had to
stand on their kitchen cabinets to keep their heads above water. And the water
was nasty. The pictures show how black and dirty the water was.

They had flood insurance and were able to get started on repairing/rebuilding
pretty quickly after the water receded and the roads were cleared. But, my
father has said everytime a hurricane has been headed for Biloxi that if his
house is flooded again, he is going to collect the insurance money and move to
Wichita!

It is very quiet right now, no wind no rain but very tropical. I went
out to get the paper this morning (they delivered it!) and could hear
this rumbling which was kinda odd, then I realized it was the surf
pounding on the beach a coupla miles away. Saw one car on the road,
apparently leaving (Mercedes Content: it was an ML!).

Been out working, moving and tieing stuff down. Surf pounding is much
louder now. I might ride my bike over to the beach in a while if it
doesn't start raining, though I might get shanghaied if there are any
po-po around. Plus they closed off Keewaw so the road is probably
blocked for residents and beach-goers.

Gotta figure out where to put the vehicles so as to minimize tree hits.
I was thinking to move them to the parking lot down at the shopping area
but all those cheap crappy buildings will probably start shedding stuff
in the breeze so I might just take my chances with the trees here.

Dragged the genny up onto the porch so it is close by, have about 30gal
of fuel, and plenty for the chainsaw, so should be good if/when the
power goes out, at least for awhile then it's pioneer time.

In good news, the barrier island Spit that the Keewaw hedge fund boys
want to develop will probably get overwashed and some rural renewal
action, which will be good for those of us who want to save it and keep
it wild. Doing its job, what barrier islands do.

Hear Here! Herr Mann speaks the truth.

The biggest scam ever perpetrated on mankind.

Follow the money. into the CCF, into the albore compound, into
universities preaching the balderdash, etc. It is about hidden taxes,
overt taxes, keeping the economy stagnant, and being able to control the
sheeple. Univ of East Anglia and albore are in the middle of the scam.

G Mann via Mercedes

IMHO, "climate change" is the modern version of the drummer who pulled his
wagon into town in the 1800's and promised to "make it rain" ... then
collected "donations from everyone for miles around" to finance his
"special guaranteed method to make it rain" ... Once the money was
collected, he then vaporized into the night, to appear in another town and
work his scam yet again.

"Climate Change" is that scheme on modern steroids, now involving elected
officials, who are no doubt in for a good cut.

Balderdash !!!

Well, personally I'm worried about anyone or any country being able to
"control" climate change. So, in the future, who will control
rainfall, droughts, snow, storms, etc.? This is a slippery slope to
get on. I'm content with "mother nature" having control. The whole
issue of climate change or whatever name seems to be more about
funneling money to companies owned by friends who will claim to exert
some control, but never really accomplish anything meaningful. Just my
thoughts. Hope everyone survives Mathew OK.

Best Wishes that all stay safe,

Finished boarding up ground floor, and the only two windows I could reach on
second floor. Hurricane film is installed on all windows, so boarding up is
overkill.

Performed operational test on generator, passed. Probably should change the
oil in the genny.

Still not planning to EVAC, but making all preparations. Maybe tomorrow.

My 6.5hp 3650 Watt Husky (Home Depot) labeled Chinese Homelite with Subaru
engine started first pull pretty much every time. Home Depot used to sell them
for $499, with frequent specials at $399.
This is what replaced it, but now it looks like that one's discontinued too:
https://www.ridgid.com/us/en/3600-watt-powered-portable-generator

They still have some Honda engined Ridgids at Home Depot.

My yellow 11hp Robin in the picture once started when I was slowly pulling the
rope looking for top dead center. Strongest magneto ignition I ever saw, usually
you need a battery to get a spark when you aren't even trying to start it. It
was made in the late 1990s, my best guess is it saw about 200 hours of power
failures in the 15 years the original owner had it. I've had a couple of short
outages that I never bothered to use it for, unlike 2012 and 2013, when I had
multi-day outages that got me quite interested in generators. With $4 gas, I was
paying $20 a day to run the 1984 Coleman, and I was running it less than half
the time.

I probably should have stopped with the free Coleman (dad bought it new and
didn't need it any more) and the $50 plus parts Husky that my next door neighbor
now owns. That Husky could run my dryer (on air, not heat) and my 40" tv for 110
minutes on 60oz of gas. All of my larger generators got 75 minutes or less. I
replaced it with the Robin because it couldn't hold rpm against my 4500W water
heater, and now I'm using propane for hot water and I miss that quiet little
fuel-sipper. I hear the Harbor Freight/Predator in that size is the functional
equal to my old Husky, but I have to wonder if the Predator engine is as durable
as the Robin it's copied from. You can get a Predator for about $300 on a good
sale.

(it's been my habit to slowly pull engines to TDC, retract the rope and then
pull hard since I broke the 2nd starter rope on my Dad's 1980s 11hp Coleman
generator, they don't kick back if you start from TDC and get two revolutions in
before ignition, it's also a necessary trick with many chain saws if you want
you fingers and the starter to last, but you only get one revolution with a
chain saw)

I sure like the Subaru/Robin small engines!

I have not worked with one in half a dozen years or so, so they may
have changed - but the build quality, easy starting, smooth
running, quietness of those sure sold me.

The track forecast for Hurricane Matthew has shifted dramatically since
Tuesday, and the storm no longer appears to be a significant threat for the
Mid-Atlantic north of Virginia Beach.

The computer model consensus is that Matthew will hug the Southeast coast
between Thursday night and Saturday before retreating to the east. It poses
a serious threat from the east coast of Florida to near the South
Carolina-North Carolina border.

I used to search CL every day or two, 3-4 times a year I'd find something I
couldn't pass up, like the $50 like new Husky/Subaru 3650 that needed motor
mounts and an air box, looked like somebody dropped it on the ground from 3-4'
up, or my best find, a $250 RGV6100 Subaru contractor's generator in perfect
condition that had run a house for a few power failures (see pic).

You can easily find a Subaru powered Coleman/Homelite/storebrand for under $300
for 3500-4000W or $400 for 5kw, they made a bazillion of those things.

Actual Honda generators tend to have high resale value, but one time I bought a
Wacker 5600 (Brit brushless generator with Honda engine, sold by a company that
specializes in concrete tools) with a broken starter rope for $125, worth about
$2500 new. If it were an 11hp Honda it probably would go for $300 for parts, but
an 11hp industrial unit with Honda engine and a name nobody heard of, nobody
wanted it if they couldn't start it.

What part of the use of TP did you not understand?
Surely you did not think anyone was suggesting you use sawdust for that

Better than lime is a supply of wood chips. Put a layer of wood chips in the
bucket, make your deposit, add chips to cover. When the bucket is full dump it
in a pile at the edge of the yard making sure it's covered with chips. A year
after you make your last deposit put the compost on your flowers...

Trust me, we are gonna get whacked. The issue is how bad, not whether.
I shall report as I can.

I am watching the evac sh*tshow that is going to be peaking soon and I
would rather sit here out on the deck during the peak of the storm and
take my chances rather than be in that mess. They are going to open the
other lane of I-26 shortly for a reversal, the current lanes are already
a complete parking lot. Then I hear that the evac road on the island
has been closed in the last little while because of some crash by some
d.a. Luckily the other road can detour around it, I guess, but that
just increases the mess.

Food, gas, beer, ammo, I'm good.

A winter storm usually comes up quickly and with minimal warning. When you

A hurricane is known for some time, as with Matthew, we've been watching
it churn for almost a week - all without knowing whether or not we will be
at risk. So the stress starts in early - do I prepare or do I sit back and
wait units it's nearly on top of me? The last 2-3 days have been a real
roller coaster here, as we don't know if we're going to feel the effects of
it or not - every 3-5 hours when a new NHC forecast comes out we have to
look, and even that isn't a given. When one of the hurricanes hit the west
coast of Florida in the early 2000s, the course changed enough two hours
before it made landfall to almost completely miss us, where up until that
point we were square it its line of travel.

So with a winter storm you have less warning, but it's more likely to
affect you in many cases. With a hurricane there's all this time of
anticipation leading up to it, but even in the final hours you may end up
not being affected.

I suspect the simple answer is that most folks have no idea of the
quantity in inventory at home, so when faced with a situation where
they may need "emergency" supplies, and are standing in a store
trying to decide what they should buy, TP comes to mind and they
justify it by thinking that it won't matter if they already have lots
of it. It is relatively cheap and will ultimately be used so it cannot
be a bad idea to make certain one has lots of it.

a new burner for our gas grill and putting that back into operation, in
case we need to cook during an extended power outage.

Re: [MBZ] OT Latest track

2016-10-05 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I have an observation in this regard:

While one might think hurricanes are the better of say, a winter storm, having
experienced both I would disagree. Here's why:

A winter storm usually comes up quickly and with minimal warning. When you know
it's coming you might have all of a day or two to prepare at worse.

A hurricane is known for some time, as with Matthew, we've been watching it
churn for almost a week - all without knowing whether or not we will be at
risk. So the stress starts in early - do I prepare or do I sit back and wait
units it's nearly on top of me? The last 2-3 days have been a real roller
coaster here, as we don't know if we're going to feel the effects of it or not
- every 3-5 hours when a new NHC forecast comes out we have to look, and even
that isn't a given. When one of the hurricanes hit the west coast of Florida
in the early 2000s, the course changed enough two hours before it made landfall
to almost completely miss us, where up until that point we were square it its
line of travel.

So with a winter storm you have less warning, but it's more likely to affect
you in many cases. With a hurricane there's all this time of anticipation
leading up to it, but even in the final hours you may end up not being affected.

I suspect the simple answer is that most folks have no idea of the
quantity in inventory at home, so when faced with a situation where they
may need "emergency" supplies, and are standing in a store trying to
decide what they should buy, TP comes to mind and they justify it by
thinking that it won't matter if they already have lots of it. It is
relatively cheap and will ultimately be used so it cannot be a bad idea
to make certain one has lots of it.

2016-10-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Well I got called an "AZZ wipe" yesterday for pointing out what our
actual hurricane evac route is so maybe that sort of thing is on
peoples' little minds.

I remember my grandparents stocking up on TP and loading up a closet
with it. These were the folks who never had an indoor terlet until my
parents built a new house for them, and even then they would
occasionally go out to the little house, nostalgia or something. When I
was small I remember the catalog and cobs in there but they soon got
some store-bought amenities for it. I think some of that TP was still
in the house 30yr later when I cleaned it out.

Costco yesterday was cleaned out of TP and bottled water, and I got
there before Nimrata got everyone in a panic.

BTW if you want to know what good community agitation is all about, read
this article. My little friend (with some behind the scenes help from
yours truly) has been quite busy. She is taking the hit all by herself
as she figures they will be less likely to try to get even with her
though she is still quite fearful as they have been known to be quite
vengeful.
http://www.postandcourier.com/20161004/161009735/recordings-show-summey-playing-both-sides-on-i-526
Max lives across the street from this scalawag, my good buddy!

BTW the latest track shows the storm a bit further offshore which will
be good for us. I think it is still going to be bad, maybe just not as
bad. The binyahs seem to all be staying while the comyahs are clogging
up the interstate. I have no idea where the hell they are going, and I
would guess most of them don't either. First morning today that I have
noticed the traffic coming FROM the exclusive gated resort communities
down road was heavier than the workers going in. Yesterday I saw the
Jamaica bus going in early to pick up the indentured servants, er, guest
workers, from the hotel so it must be bad!

Stocked up on TP and seltzer water (stores were devoid of "flat" water) so
we're going to hunker down and wait it out. Unless we don't.

Forecast has improved a bit overnight, looks like the odds of hurricane
force winds are between 10-20% over the next five days, according to NOAA.
Odds of tropical storm force winds are 50-60%. Hurricane arrival pushed
back from Friday evening to Saturday morn.

Meanwhile, all schools / offices / etc are closed today, including my work
location, so we will probably spend the day (and the next and the next)
prepping for winds and rain, moving some stuff inside and securing the
furniture on the back porch. Good excuse to test run the generator for a
bit, maybe purchase some extension cords. I'm also thinking about getting
a new burner for our gas grill and putting that back into operation, in
case we need to cook during an extended power outage.

Why wouldn't you be able to cook? Doesn't everybody have 12 camp stoves? That
reminds me, I've only got 3 gallons of camp gas, time to stock up...

Since you spoke with us on the phone, the forecast track for hurricane
Matthew has shifted west (closer to you) several times.  So you need to be
prepared for this storm which should he very close to you about noon Friday.

If there is any possibility of the house flooding, evacuate and do it early.
There is very little you can save by staying there.  Have a destination
before you leave.  Take any important papers.  If you plan to go to a motel,
get a reservation early or they'll all be full.

If you are sure the house won't flood (and expected winds are below 100 mph)
you can shelter in place but have food and (especially) water for at least 3
days.  You will probably lose power and be unable to cook so be sure you
have food you can eat without cooking.  Gas up the car and get any needed
cash now; gas pumps and ATMs don't work without power.  Without power, water
and sewage lift stations will stop working.

A battery-operated radio and a couple flashlights are very nice to have.  A
battery radio may be your only source of information after power is lost
although landline phones are usually the last to go and cell phones are
often the first to work afterwards.  Power is normally restored in 3-7 days.

The very worst place to be during the storm is in your car on the road.  If
you evacuate, do it before the roads become impassible with other folks who
waited.

We have ridden out many hurricanes in Florida.  It's no fun but seldom
dangerous as long as you don't flood.  Most deaths are from drowning,
electrocution (stay away from fallen wires), and injuries during cleanup.

With luck, this storm will weaken and/or shift back to the east.

Hang in there.

Her husband actually changed his name at some point, not to Haley but
his given name to something else. I don't recall the details but it was
kinda weird.
