so use OTC stuff to deal with the symptoms and don’t expect the Paxlovid to do
it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: COVID Positive

2022-08-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We had it back in April. I never tested positive but I had a wicked sinus
headache and felt sore for a couple days. I've been having sinus issues for
awhile and apparently if your sinuses don't drain properly you might never test
positive...
We're both vaccinated but not boosted. Angie thinks she got it at the YMCA
pool. I'm dubious, there are a ton of easier vectors.

The PA that treated my son said it won’t do anything to address the symptoms,
just knock the virus down quicker than if you let it run it’s course. They said
to just use OTC stuff for the symptoms, like Dayquil/Nyquil, etc.

I'd think it's more than 60%, or at least more than 60% of adults.
I'm closer to a hermit than most, so it's no surprise that I haven't had
it yet.

Was barely too young to qualify for the vax until about March 2021
(could have gotten it in January if I was 60), by then my non-hermit
part of the year was drawing to a close and I wasn't going to take time
off work for it. After work ended, I saw no need for it, and soon after
the cardiac side effects were beginning to show up.
My boss and her husband got it this January, (both triple vaxxed at that
point in time), but she recovered before we opened the office. Doubt she
was still shedding much viral material, and we have 3 UV air filters in
the office. I was glad she bought those.

A friend had it a coupla weeks ago and was totally knocked down. She got some
Pax after a couple days and felt much better the next day to where she could be
up and around but is still very tired and sleeps like 12hr straight. Her
husband started getting sore throat and cough so he went and got it and his
symptoms totally subsided. I guess the stuff works, best to get it asap to
minimize symptoms so if you’re getting flu-like symptoms best to get the Pax.

She had one booster last year, did not get one this year. I don’t know about

He tested negative by the following Thursday. He said that the Paxlovid made
him nauseous. Didn’t mention anything about his taste, but I can ask him.

He was vaccinated but not boosted. Neither myself nor Mrs. Dan tested positive
or showed any symptoms. We’re vaccinated and double boosted and are still
masking when we go out or travel. Neither one of us have contracted COVID as of
this date, knock on wood.

Oldest son went through exactly what you describe two weekends ago. He went to
a local walk-in clinic which refused to give him Paxlovid because they said he
wasn’t “high risk” until I said “Mom has cancer, I don’t want this in the

[MBZ] OT: COVID Positive

2022-08-19 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I tested ++ for Covid last Saturday with minimal symptoms (sore throat,
congestion similar to mild cold). I was prescribed Paxlovid to minimize
risk of severe illness based solely on my age and have been taking it 2X
daily starting Monday evening of this week. Only side effect is a
disagreeable metallic taste in my mouth after eating, which fades away
after 4-5 hours. Supposedly, Paxlovid hastens recovery from the virus.
Yesterday (Thursday) I tested negative and again today (15 minute home
test) so there may be some truth to this. I also took a PCR test this
afternoon and will know the results tomorrow.

I am fully vaccinated and double boosted (last on April 21, 2022) and
generally wear a mask when shopping indoors. None of my acquaintances has
Covid and I did not notice anyone with symptoms who might have given it to
me. I assume I contracted the omicron/B5 variant that is super contagious.

My question is how many others in this group have yet to or already
contracted Covid 19? I had read that 60% of US citizens have been
infected, although I cannot confirm this.

It looks to me like the dam has burst. After chasing appointments for
weeks unsuccessfully, I received TWO opportunities within 10 minutes
yesterday. I found an appointment at a county site in an inconvenient
location, signed up of course. Within 10 minutes I had an email from my
local clinic offering a shot. I took it, then cancelled the county site
appointment.

I get my first dose on Tues.

I got my first Pfizer dose almost 2wk ago, no reaction whatsoever except for
minor soreness at the injection site (a former nurse relative says get it in
your dominant arm as more motion will help alleviate that more quickly). I’m
reading that the first dose makes a good part of the antibodies so that’s
comforting.

I’m ready to resume normal programming. I started going back to the gym which I
think I has given me much more benefits than risk of covids hazards. I was
feeling like a total slug after months of not going and that was awful. I can
really feel the difference already, I feel so much better.

Mrs. Dan in the state system, so last night about 7:00 pm we got
 notifications that we were eligible.

I signed us both up and we could have gotten in as early as Saturday, but
we’re in Indiana at the northern ranch right now, returning to Floriduh on
 Sunday.

So I made appointments for us on Monday morning. We’re up for our first
dose with the Pfizer vaccine at 9:00.

I’ll take what they’re giving, as long as it works. A couple of percentage

Thanks, Karl.

He self isolates pretty well, so that’s not an issue. He didn’t present with
any respiratory issues. If he has what the wife brought home, it’s not so much
diarrhea as things are just really loose. That’s why I was saying I was
surprised that all of the known stuff I threw at it seemed to have little to no
effect. It’s just gradually gotten more normal over a week’s time.

We’ll keep a close eye, for sure. Again, thank you!

That's the tough part of this thing - variable presentation. Many people

Re: [MBZ] OT - COVID 19 Stuff/Non-political

2020-03-28 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
It could easily be covid 19 unfortunately. Diarrhea is one of the known
presenting symptoms in a significant minority of patients. Of course it
could be tens of other viruses or bacteria also.

The doc probably doesnt have any access to a test for non hospitalized
patients. That is changing rapidly, but we are still not at that level of
test availability. So thay have no way to rule out covid 19.

You can get one forecast for hospital bed shortages here. Florida peaks
later I think:

https://covid19.healthdata.org/?fbclid=IwAR22wuagEnK_CIc2Httm1vTDRU8LAE7QQK6wNlq4McYnbqOt3CFk5vp5Mao

Either way chicken soup, sleep and keep a weather eye out in 5-7 days if he
isnt looking right. Significant shortness of breath is about the only
reason to go to an ER.

That's the tough part of this thing - variable presentation. Many people
seem to not get super sick at all, and the ones who do have a variety of
symptoms. Might not be a bad idea to isolate him from you if he has any
respiratory stuff at all.

When Shirley was a Registered Dietitian, she used the A-B-C diet of
applesauce, bananas, and cottage cheese on the hospital floor.

Glad to hear it is not COVID-19!

Lesson to us all, not a good time to share any health concerns with other
than a healthcare professional or family, lest someone go off half cocked.

Sad stories about traveling nurses being kicked out of leases because
landlords are afraid of contagion.

[MBZ] OT - COVID 19 Stuff/Non-political

2020-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This hit really close to home:

Youngest boy comes home from work last night, looking a bit peaked and feeling
poorly, said he had a fever. Hmm. Not good. Checks his temperature, sure
enough, he’s got a mild fever. Says his gut has been a mess as the day went on,
with his lower GI going berserk.

Mom was kind enough to bring something like this into the house recently, which
I’ve been dealing with as well. No fever, but definitely tearing up the lower
GI. Nothing, I mean nothing, has affected the symptoms. Yogurt, cheese,
anything that would normally slow or stop things up has absolutely no effect.

So anyway, once we hear the symptoms we breathe a sigh of relief and send him
off to his room.

About an hour later, he comes out to me at the computer and he’s all worked up.
Seems that he shared his concerns about his symptoms/health with a coworker
that day. The coworker, a poorly educated rural Bubba type, goes home and tells
his equally clueless wife. She has a major meltdown and calls a County
commissioner, at home, and rants about the employees spreading CV19 all over
the place and the County doing nothing to prevent it.

So now youngest son is like the chicken that got caught in the tractor’s nuts,
to quote Slim Pickens.

I tell him to not worry, he’s not going to lose his job, and that with everyone
on edge this is just one of what will probably be many meltdowns that will
occur over the next few weeks. Hardly calming, but at this point there’s not a
lot he can do. He was planning on going to the doctor this morning to get
checked out anyway.

So he goes to the doctor this morning. Stomach bug, doc tells him. No cure, it
has to run it’s course. He gets a “get out of jail free” statement from the doc
and sends it to his supervisor so he can return to work tomorrow.

Crisis averted. Oy.

2020-03-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Typical, let the feds run it and it takes too long, is too expensive, and
in the end doesn't even work right.

Maybe one good outcome of this 'crisis' is a dramatic change in law and
regulation to unshackle private enterprises for producing such tests. If I
were Prez, I'd try to ram that through Congress right now, before they
start the next round of impeachment hearings. Could probably save a bit of
money in the federal budget by eliminating whichever office is responsible
for this screw-up.

[MBZ] OT Covid Charlie Foxtrot

2020-03-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Two independent opinions -- one a friend, a professor of immunology at
the local kawlidge, and the Dr. Boy, both say this whole thing is a
total Charlie Foxtrot re: testing and such.

"The FDA/CDC test is 5 genes by RT-PCR.

Not sure why on earth this method is the go too. could not borrow
our RT-PCR machines because the FDA has only approved the brand ABI.
Total clusterf***.
I had thought about ordering PCR primers posted on the WHO website weeks
ago.

My lab class was looking up the genomes of this virus that were being
posted weeks ago.  Crazy thing is us “amateur” molecular biologists
could do this testing."

Stanford developed their own tests a coupla weeks ago, better than what
is "out there."

This all goes down to a lot of long-time bureaucratic nonsense standing
in the way... comforting... meanwhile everyone is pointing fingers at
the others and the guy in charge, playing the blame game, filling 7x24
cable time...
