Re: [MBZ] OT: Printers down and VPN
Bingo! Your mentioning the possibility of a bad port led me to try the printer in a port on the opposite side of the computer. It works well there. Having shown that the problem is not in the printer, I'll try your other suggestions in order to find an arrangement that works. I tried to download the printers driver from Samsung, but apparently Samsung doesn't support the printer anymore since no downloads are listed for the printer. A cable didn't help. I have found the problem, however. See my email to Dan. Did you try the mouse and/or keyboard in the new USB hub to see if they worked? Or did you try swapping the keyboard or mouse to see if they worked in the port you’ve been using for the USB hub? You can simply unplug and plug in the mouse and if the port is good the computer will recognize it. This is all process of elimination sort of logic. [MBZ] OT: Printers down and VPN
Listers: Both my printers, a laser and an inkjet are no longer accessible from Windows7. I ran Avast antivirus which came up with a long technical statement that UPNP port 49153 in the ISP's router is vulnerable. Avasts suggested solutions were: "Disable this service in this devices setting." and offered to do so. I clicked on it and a field came up saying: "Done". The next page suggested buying VPN service from Avast for $36 per year which is supposed to protect identity, location, etc. And/or upgrading firmware in the ISP's Ralink router. (Attempts to download software from Samsung for the Samsung M2070 laser printer were "could not connect"). ISP is Centurylink (Previously Embarqmail.) After Avast supposedly changed UPNP port 49153 to something else, both printers are still not found when I try to print something from the computer. The printer still works as a copier, however. All suggestions about Win7 finding my printers or turning them into boat anchors appreciated. working right, and move the carriage over the dry paper towel. GENTLY press on the syringe plunger to force hot windex through the printhead. If it won't move under gentle pressure, pull back on the syringe to suck the gummy ink up out of the printhead. Don't pull too hard, you don't want to blow any seals. You may have to repeat the pull, release, press, release, pull, etc cycle a few times to get the dried ink moving. Once you can push Windex through the head, repeat with fresh until no more color appears on the towel. Change as needed, you don't want to flood the guts with windex. If you have not added glycerin, you need to suck all the windex out of the spike and fill a new syringe with the correct color ink and gently push some through -- otherwise it takes forever to get the ink working right. Windex makes the ink leak and drip all over, causing strange colors and nozzle plugs that are really ink spread all over the bottom of the printhead, which traps the fired droplets. They are working fine, but no ink hits the paper. Once you have cleared all the colors that remained blocked, REMOVE ANY PAPER TOWELS (I forget this all the time, have to take one printer apart and unjam it, something slipped due to me stupidly leaving a wad of paper in the capping station), re-install the cartridges, and plug the printer back in. Very likely you will get decent nozzle checks. If you have funky colors, print some purge pages and run nozzle checks after each page to see what's going on. Mixed inks usually clear once you have decent flow and decent nozzle checks. If you have on again/off again nozzle checks, let the printer sit on but with head parked overnight and try again. Ditto for drips -- Windex makes the ink run through the nozzles and the only way to clear that up is print with it. It will stop, but it can take several pages. If none of this works (and I've only had one head that required more), you will have to remove the printhead, soak the bottom surface in windex overnight -- have a care to keep the windex well away from the electronics!, and then next day use a syringe and plastic tubing to suck windex up through the head from a pool of it. This will definitely clear any blockages, although it may take some time. You will then have to pull water through the head to get rid of the windex and re-install the head and try again. Needless to say this takes a while, but Epson printers are definitely worth the effort for photo printing. Nothing else touches them for pure quality of prints, and I'll gladly put up with the clogging and cleaning for that. A few other hints -- do NOT turn the printers off, ever, unless you have to. All Epson printers do a short clean cycle when powered on, and will put 90% of the ink into the waste pads if you only print a few things at a time. This is greatly reduced by never turning them off -- the head is capped the same off or idle, why waste the ink? Also, NEVER let them sit weeks or months without use. They always clog if you do. Print a purge page at least once a week and you will rarely if ever have clogging problems. Peter who just raised an R2880 from the dead and is looking at a clogged 4880 in spite of not needing it. the cartridges, and fold up a dry paper towel to fit under the printhead. Heat some windex in the microwave -- you can add some glycerin if you have it to raise the viscocity, it helps later -- and fill a syringe with the hot windex and attach some tubing to allow you to connect to the spike. Re: [MBZ] OT printers
I had a nice one I just junked as the ink dried up every time I left it sit for any length of time. And the ink carts became difficult to find, and expensive. It did nice photo prints so I was sorta bummed to put it aside, but new ones are so cheap it is hardly worth the bother, and Costco is even cheaper to print photos. Of course, all the money is in the carts, it is the razor/blade marketing approach. All that said, I saw something at some point that indicated you could clean up the whole deal, including goobered carts, with alcohol and swabs and such if you want to take the time. The ink inside is likely OK, but I think that article said something about putting alcohol of some sort in them to get things flowing again. You can probably google something to find some instructions. --R On 8/5/14 5:12 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Canon inkjet printer - multi ink tanks type Has been sitting for a year or more Likely to be dried up ink etc Any way to ressurect it? Re: [MBZ] OT printers
First I would attempt to print. I've been surprised before. If it's clogged, those printers typically have a removable head. Get some bulk ink and refillable cartridges (this will cost less than new carts from the official source), remove the printhead, and apply some diluted Windex or 409 to the seats. You should be able to use some paper towels under the printhead to draw ink out, and you can buy cleaning syringes that have a fitting to cover the filter so you can GENTLY force dilute windex or other cleaning fluid through. Sitting it overnight on a pad of paper toweling soaked in windex and water usually frees up the dried ink in the head if you also soak the top. I've revived quite a few, including a decade old R800 that was totally dried out with pigment ink in it. Took a while, but it works well enough now to print exhibition quality prints. Re: [MBZ] OT printers
I had the same series printer. All the ink fed through channels into one printhead. Like yours, if the printer sat for a while without being used, the ink dried up and the only solution offered by Canon was to buy another printhead holder for $50. I carefully took apart the ink cartridge carrier as well as the printhead and used warm water, the diluent that comes in a cartridge refill kit, small wires, a large hypodermic syringe/needle, etc. to clean out the passages and the head. It worked after that until the electronics died, but the printing was not quite as good as it had been before. Canon soon solved the problem by putting printheads in each of the cartridges. If a printhead goes bad and there is a reasonable amount of ink in it, Walmart at least, will give you another cartridge. For the last year I've used one of those new type Canon printer/copiers which I bought for $37 at Walmart. It's worked flawlessly and serves my purpose since I don't use it a great deal. Yesterday I purchased essentially the same printer but with the addition of faxing ability for $78 from Walmart. It will go in the office in the house and the older Canon will go to the shop office. The last HP printer I bought lasted less than a year before it's electronics went bad, and it cost twice as much as the Canons. HP used to be the gold standard, and their large business printers may still be, but their small printers seem to have problems as do Epsons. For the present, my choice is Canon for low volumes of work Gerry On 8/5/14 5:12 PM, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: Canon inkjet printer - multi ink tanks type Has been sitting for a year or more Likely to be dried up ink etc Any way to ressurect it? I have a cheap-o Samsung black-only laser printer at home. Bought it a few years ago on sale and with a rebate, it cost me something like $50. So I've gotten my money's worth, but it's developed a problem where it will detect a paper feed error about 75% of the time it tries to pull a sheet out of the tray for printing. Simply opening and closing the paper tray will cause it to try again, and it eventually works. Ideally I'd like to fix this, maybe it needs cleaning somewhere. But assuming I need to replace it, anyone have a model they'd recommend? At this point I'd want color capability, but I know there are some brands that will rape you on the ink refills. What I'd like is: Decent print quality Reliable PC (Windows XP) and Mac compatible Networkable (though sharing via a host computer would be acceptable) Reasonably priced and reasonably priced ink. Common error for this type of printer that's sometimes caused by the paper pickup wheel becoming glazed with residue from the sheets it has picked from the stack in it's lifetime. Most paper has a finish that under friction will transfer to surface of the wheel. Since the new texture of the drive wheel is sort of like a pencil eraser once it become slick it fails to feed. Suggest you first try Qtip with denatured alky and just wipe down the paper pickup wheels. Failing that, remove them and carefully sand them with 400 grit wet/dry, clean them and reinstall... should work. Other option is to replace with new, however, in my experience, there is no Rusty go to source for such items, so you may have to get in touch with Peggy to find them. Good luck!! Grant... If you can't get it fixed easily, you should be able to get a Color Laserjet 5 or the like, or if you can deal with black any of the HP Laserjets 4-6. Go craigslist or local pickup, get the jet direct card and postscript SIMM if it's a choice. Toner is somewhat hard to find retail but you can get it on Ebay; the big advantage is that HP parts are still pretty widely available. I have a CLJ5 in the basement, backup to my CLJ8550dn (thrift store find) now but it had a long hard life before. :) Not photo quality but it has worked every time I have turned it on, and NOS toner is crazy cheap. Even if you do get the Samsung working you might keep an eye out for a good deal, I have not regretted going to ex-commercial printers even for the few hundred pages we print in a year. No doubt I could get prettier pictures but I value reliability more. -Tim On Aug 25, 2011 10:55 AM, Benz Hogs benz-n-h...@gulseth.net wrote: Classic sign of pickup roller wear. Re: [MBZ] OT: printers
My printer knowledge is not current, but if you are looking at color laserjet printers, I would offer the following advice: 1.) Pay careful attention to the supplies. Check to see if starter cartridges are used, or if regular capacity cartridges are installed. This is a common practice among printer manufacturers, and can make a significant difference in the price when you consider you may have to purchase a complete set of cartridges within a short time of buying the printer. When I bought my Konica/Minolta color laserjet a few years ago, it was the only machine in it's price range that had standard cartridges. The difference between it and comparable machines with starter cartridges was only about $60. A complete set of regular cartridges is about $300. Ouch. I am still on the originals after 4 years. 2.) Two words: Hewlett Packard. You might want to check CL for a good used HP unit. Properly cared for, their stuff is frickin' bulletproof. Often easy to replace, but maybe not so easy to source the part. You could try cleaning it, but don't use anything too aggressive. Fred Moir wrote: FWIW. The tape transport in VCRs have the same problem and the solutions are, replace, or use a chemical re-gripper. What I use for tape transports I got from MCM Electronics. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/FEDRON-8 It really works. Especially on rubber parts that are just getting glazed. Really old, hard parts it's less effective. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Properly cared for, their stuff is frickin' bulletproof. The only reason I didn't buy an HP myself was that the choices they had in my price range at the time were consumer grade machines that would not last a long time. I have an HP 5500 color laserjet at work. The set of print cartridges for it run about $1k. If I was going to buy a monochrome laserjet it would be a used 4000 series HP. Those machine would survive a nuclear blast, just about. And it won't spew toner particles into the air like other printers -- even some HP. The 5500 is in the hallway outside of my office for that very reason.
