[MBZ] Oil as per Mobil 1

2010-12-24 Thread l02turner
Just checked with the Mobil 1 website and got this:
The company that manufactures your vehicle recommends this Mobil 1
product, or has a special requirement.

  Current Vehicle:
  Year: 1991
  Make: Mercedes-Benz
  Model: 300D
  Engine Type: 5cyl. 2.5Liter Turbocharged

Do you think MB recommends 0W40 for a 20 yr old TC’d diesel?

I know M1’s primary concern is selling oil but the comment about the “...
manufactures your vehicle recommends ”

I *might* (BIG might) go with a 0W40 for a cold weather oil... gotta give that
some thought.

Yes, I know, I’m a Oil Analysis guy – but analysis has little to do with
choosing a oil (mostly).

Thanks!
Merry Christmas!

M1 0W-40 is/was on the spec sheet of approved oils even for OM617s. I
tried it, and thought the engine was too noisy.

If I were in northern Canada or Alaska, or someplace like that with
regular, extended periods of sub-zero (F) temps I might use it in the
winter. Otherwise I'd recommend a heavier weight.

Don't we have archives on this list?

Seriously we've been through this like 20 times a year for the 7 odd years I've
been around.
M1 0w40, 15w50 and 5w40 are all fine or at least were all fine back 3 or 4
years ago. Word is they may have been reformulated. I'll start finding out in a
couple weeks when I switch my 190D to M1 5w40.

Some people don't like 0w40 because it makes the engine louder. I don't like it
because in a 61x engine it leaks worse. It does help a 61x start better in
extreme cold though.
