Such failures will have obvious envelope damage, not just a burnt-out filament.

I never do. In fact, I use an alcohol wipe on them any time they’re handled
just to be sure there’s nothing on the glass envelope. A box of those little
single use squares is cheap as wine and they’re really handy in the shop for
all sorts of things.

One thing to remember with the halogen bulbs is you aren't supposed to touch
them bare handed. The oils from your fingers get on the glass and severely
shorten their useful lifespan. I have had silver star ultras last several years
(800-1000 hours).

I have been buying Orsam-Sylvania H7 (halogen) bulbs from O’Reilly’s. They
sell four different price levels of H7 from Basic to XtraVision to
SilverStar to SilverStar Ultra. Each successive level represents an
increase in lumens, color temperature and projected beam distance. But if
you read the small print on the back of the bulb packages, you’ll see as
the price (and performance levels) increase, the life expectancies
decrease. Last night O’Reilly’s did not have a Basic or SilverStar Ultra
available. I picked up a $17 XtraVision that has a life expectancy of 150
hours. I noted the $25 SilverStar is expected to last only about 83 hours.

This is true, but after I replaced TWO NAPA alternators on our BRV, I
went with an O'Reilly alternator.

My moto is that if it goes in my body I won't buy it from Amazon.
Supplements, cold/allergy remedies, contact lens supplies, etc.

More and more I feel that way about car parts as well. It's just not
worth the cost savings to have to re-do the job in a few months when the
counterfeit part fails, even if they are willing to exchange it.

I find O'Reilly, AutoZone, RockAuto etc. parts are pretty much low-end
junk, though if they sell a brand such as Sylvania or Motorcraft I will
likely believe that it's genuine.

For a local parts source I usually go to NAPA. It's often a bit more
expensive but parts (even their house brands) are decent quality, the
counter people are clean and professional, and warranties have never
been a hassle. I notice that almost all the good indy shops get parts
from NAPA or the relevant dealer.

For OEM online parts I'm using FCPEuro these days.

I really liked the output and color of the Silver Star and Silver Star Ultras,
but as you mentioned, I found the useful lives of these pretty lousy. At nearly
$30/pair it was tough to justify replacing them on a regular basis.

Good. I doubt they have counterfeiters in their supply chain.
