Good, because that's how it's installed now. It's all put back together -
but I won't know till the commute tomorrow how it runs at speed.

Getriebe is gearbox, kw has nothing whatsoever to do with power in this

http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt says "Gelenkwelle" is
"Drive Shaft". (It also says "driveshaft" is "Getriebewelle", but that's a
different story.)

Anyway, "DIESE SEITE Z. GELENKW," means, "This side toward driveshaft."

Both u-joint sides are "notchy", but I'm going to ignore that now.
since I

need the car Monday AM.

This is fairly normal, after not too long in service. Ball-bearings
really don't like non-rotating service. It's only after it gets 'bad'
enough that it's a problem.

THe only clues I see are the following molded into one side of the
disk -
"DIESE SEITE Z. GELENKW" I'm guessing that it translates into "This
side to

?"

Z. is probably ZU, or "to". I'd hit the sites and look up translations
for "power", "engine", "drive", "driven", etc. I bet you can find it
fairly quickly. Gelenk-wards? :-)

My guess would be that the fatter rubber bits would be intended
to serve under compression.

"Gelenk" is joint, "Z." is zu, or "to". This side to joint (U-joint?) -
I'd put this side facing the driveshaft.

Also, shaft is "welle"; wonder if "gelenkw" is some efficient German way
of saying "join the shaft"?

Re: [MBZ] Removing, was: Balancing a drive shaft, etc.

2009-09-26 Thread OK Don
Now, the last (hopefully) question -- it seems that the front flex disk is
directional, in that there are excentric washers in both ends of the tubes
going throughte disk, and rubber shoulders around one half of the way around
each tube. I had planned to mearly observe how the original was mounted, and
install the new one the same way. However, the way I got the srive shaft out
of the car resulted in the old flex disk free falling out and rolling half
way down the drive before I caught up.
The manual doesn't address the issue either way ---

THe only clues I see are the following molded into one side of the disk -
"DIESE SEITE Z. GELENKW" I'm guessing that it translates into "This side to
?"

The on-line translators give "GELENKW" as the English equalivilent, as I
suspected they would.

If I have to guess, I'll asume that KW refers to power, and put this side
towards the engine.

[MBZ] Removing, was: Balancing a drive shaft, etc.

2009-09-26 Thread OK Don
I got it out! Had to drop the center of the exhaust, leaving it hanging on
both ends. This allowed the shaft to flex enough at the u-joint to let the
rear end drop ( I had both flex disks pried off the srive shaft already).
The end of the rear shaft will slip through the seat belt bracket with the
flex disk off, so I didn't hack it into pieces after all.

Once the shaft was out, it was easy to use the 18" pipe wrench to hold the
u-joint, and the 12" pipe wrench to turn the spline locking nut. I had to
jump on the 12" wrench to get it loose.

The center bearing came off without much complaint with the help of the
three jaw puller (after cutting away what remained of the support rubber). A
nice piece of aluminum antenna tubing fit the bearing for pressing (hammer)
into the support, and sliding into place on the shaft.

It should go back much easier now that the splines slide!

Both u-joint sides are "notchy", but I'm going to ignore that now. since I
need the car Monday AM.

It's too dark and there are too many mosquitoes, so I'll finish the
re-assembly tomorrow.
